The Marian Spirituality Of 'Lumen Gentium' And The Renewal Of Marian Devotion In The Church Today, Mary Mccaughey
The Marian Spirituality Of 'Lumen Gentium' And The Renewal Of Marian Devotion In The Church Today, Mary Mccaughey
Marian Studies
While Marian devotion is alive today, its contemporary expression differs from the form it took before the Second Vatican Council and has developed since. My paper will explore the present state of Marian devotion—forty years after the publication of Marialis Cultus by Pope Paul VI, and fifty years after the Second Vatican Council—and consider how the form of devotion that exists today, understood with reference to the ecclesiology of Lumen Gentium, might better be interpreted as a Marian spirituality. While some might disagree that there is such a concept as a Marian Spirituality at all, my paper will demonstrate that …

The Role Of The Black Catholic Theologian And Scholar In Today’S Context, M. Shawn Copeland
The Role Of The Black Catholic Theologian And Scholar In Today’S Context, M. Shawn Copeland
Journal of the Black Catholic Theological Symposium
Based on her keynote address delivered during the 2009 Annual Meeting at Atlanta University’s Lyke Center, Copeland takes a look back at the nearly forty-year history of black theological scholarship, reminding us of the intimate link between culture, history, and the ongoing and critical need for a theology that is authentic and responsive to the needs of the poor and marginalized. She reminds us of the urgency for the pursuit of truth and freedom, especially for black scholars and theologians. However, the quest for authenticity comes with a price.

Antiracist Pedagogy In The Basic Course: Teaching Cultural Communication As If Whiteness Matters, Kristen P. Treinen, John T. Warren
Antiracist Pedagogy In The Basic Course: Teaching Cultural Communication As If Whiteness Matters, Kristen P. Treinen, John T. Warren
Basic Communication Course Annual
As we have found in our experience as communication educators and scholars, there is a need for educators to understand the implications and impact of whiteness in the classroom. What we argue is typically missing in the basic course is an antiracist pedagogy. An antiracist pedagogy asks educators to understand the power and privilege inherent in whiteness, and asks educators to examine how whiteness affects their classroom, students, teaching strategies and attitudes toward students of color. In this essay, we offer four modifications to the basic course which are consistent with an antiracist pedagogy. The first modification involves re-examining the …

Satire And Science: Some Restoration And Eighteenth-Century Links, Jo Allen Bradham
Satire And Science: Some Restoration And Eighteenth-Century Links, Jo Allen Bradham
University of Dayton Review
Linking satire and science evokes the standard response that late seventeenth- and eighteenth-century satirists, individually and practically in chorus, attacked the foolishness and the excess of scientific experimentation, especially that demonstrated by the Royal Society. Satirists, so conventional wisdom holds, argue that the so-called natural philosophers' farfetched projects have nothing to do with the understanding of human beings, the strengthening of a wise society, or the improvement of the moral state. The third book of Gulliver's Travels and the last book of the Dunciad confirm this view and in treatise after treatise appear as the supporting examples. Another approach—one that …

Norman Nie was nothing if not candid as to the reasons why I was chosen to speak to you this evening. He said, "We want somebody who doesn't know a bit from a bite, but who has had a lot of experience with SCSS." I qualify on both counts. Biting is something you do to a bullet, and bit is what's left over in the paycheck after the government takes its taxes away. As for the use of SCSS I've done most of a book relying solely on my portable T1 terminal and, with some risk of having a giant …
