Innovation, Genre, And Authenticity In The Nineteenth-Century Irish Novel, David Aiden Kenney Ii Apr 2022

Innovation, Genre, And Authenticity In The Nineteenth-Century Irish Novel, David Aiden Kenney Ii

Dissertations (1934 -)

Attempts to reintegrate nineteenth-century novels into the narrative of Irish literary history have been greatly hampered by their long neglect and persistent critical narratives that regard the literary output of this era as either an ingenuous or inartistic failure to establish an authentic literary tradition. Through four case studies, this dissertation explores how national romance and picaresque novels of the mid to late nineteenth-century made significant contributions to the development of the novel form within the Irish literary tradition through stylistic dexterity and cultural subtlety that has long gone unrecognized. To illustrate this, I first analyze Sheridan Le Fanu’s The …

Looking Through Whiteness: Objectivity, Racism, Method, And Responsibility, Philip Mack Apr 2022

Looking Through Whiteness: Objectivity, Racism, Method, And Responsibility, Philip Mack

Dissertations (1934 -)

Does a white philosopher have anything of value to offer to the philosophy of race and racism? If this philosophical subfield must embrace subjective experience, why should we value the perspective of white philosophers whose racial identity is often occluded by racial normativity and who lack substantive experiences of being on the receiving end of racism? Further, if we should be committed to experience, in what sense can the philosophy of race and racism be “objective”? What should that word mean?Tackling this question first, “objective” should at least mean general, that the ideas of the literature can be coherently integrated. …

Believing In God And The Youthful Manhood Of Our Time: Gender, Race, Empire And The Making Of Irish Nationalism 1860-1882, Patrick M. Bethel Apr 2022

Believing In God And The Youthful Manhood Of Our Time: Gender, Race, Empire And The Making Of Irish Nationalism 1860-1882, Patrick M. Bethel

Dissertations (1934 -)

This study examines the creation and development of Irish Nationalisms in the post-Famine period, focusing on the period 1860-1882 in the Irish counties of Mayo, Sligo, and Roscommon. In this study I argue that that Irish nationalists and British imperialists held remarkably similar views about the ambiguous racial status of the Irish, and in an effort to ameliorate those concerns, nationalists sought to impose standards of behavior derived from the colonial metropole, furthering the efforts of that same metropole to destroy indigenous ways of life. While Ireland was in this period a part of the United Kingdom, the Irish population …

The Impact Of Nutrition Literacy And Neighborhood On Diet Quality In The Mexican Origin Population, Sylvia Pena Apr 2022

The Impact Of Nutrition Literacy And Neighborhood On Diet Quality In The Mexican Origin Population, Sylvia Pena

Dissertations (1934 -)

Introduction: Diet quality is a critical component in achieving optimal health outcomes. A poor diet can lead to various health complications including obesity, heart disease, and diabetes. Hispanic individuals have been found to have higher rates of obesity; therefore, it is critical that variables impacting diet quality be examined in this population. Available literature concerning nutrition literacy, neighborhood and diet quality have not been specific to subgroups of the Hispanic population, therefore, identifying how these factors influence the Mexican origin population is needed. The aim of this dissertation was to better understand the impact of nutrition literacy and neighborhood on …

Impact Of Corrosion Inhibitors And Metals On Antibiotic Resistance In Drinking Water Distribution Systems, Lee Kimbell Apr 2022

Impact Of Corrosion Inhibitors And Metals On Antibiotic Resistance In Drinking Water Distribution Systems, Lee Kimbell

Dissertations (1934 -)

Drinking water distribution systems are important for transporting clean drinking water. Antibiotic resistant bacteria (ARB) and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in drinking water may pose risks to human and environmental health. Aging infrastructure such as metal pipes can experience significant corrosion, which can have impacts on the chemical and microbial water quality inside of drinking water systems. Chemicals are commonly added to drinking water to prevent corrosion (i.e., corrosion inhibitors). The metal pipe materials and corrosion inhibitors containing metals may have impacts on the bacteria and ARGs in drinking water systems. This research investigated the presence of ARGs in real-world …

Intertextuality And Sociopolitical Engagement In Contemporary Anglophone Women’S Writing, Jackielee Derks Apr 2022

Intertextuality And Sociopolitical Engagement In Contemporary Anglophone Women’S Writing, Jackielee Derks

Dissertations (1934 -)

My project examines contemporary Anglophone women’s rewriting to locate an emerging mode of intertextuality that defies existing literary categories. Together, the writers in my project present a new and formally innovative intertextuality that rebels against available terminology and requires new ways of reading. This project centers authors from a variety of historical contexts, including the African diaspora and former British colonies, whose intertextuality is grounded in the interrogation of Western forms and conventions. I argue that the rewritings of Ali Smith, Helen Oyeyemi, and Éilís Ní Dhuibhne deploy intertextuality to recuperate women’s experiences while interrogating the mechanisms responsible for their …

Investigating Beliefs & Attitudes Regarding Equitable Teaching & Discipline Practices: Race Essentialism In Schools, Jamee S. Carroll Apr 2022

Investigating Beliefs & Attitudes Regarding Equitable Teaching & Discipline Practices: Race Essentialism In Schools, Jamee S. Carroll

Dissertations (1934 -)

Black, Latinx, and Indigenous adolescents experience more suspensions, expulsions, and school-based arrests than White students. However, minoritized students do not engage in problematic or disruptive behaviors more frequently but rather at equal or lower rates than their White counterparts. One factor that may contribute to this discipline gap is race essentialism, which is the belief that there are deep-rooted, unalterable traits and abilities unique to each racial group. Race essentialism, which has been linked to stereotyping, prejudice, intergroup trust and closeness, and cognitive flexibility, has not been studied in a school discipline context. Demonstrating associations between race essentialism and teachers’ …

Pituitary Adenylate Cylase-Activating Polypeptide Receptor: Multiple Signaling Pathways Involved In Energy Homeostasis, Brian Maunze Apr 2022

Pituitary Adenylate Cylase-Activating Polypeptide Receptor: Multiple Signaling Pathways Involved In Energy Homeostasis, Brian Maunze

Dissertations (1934 -)

Pituitary adenylate cyclase activating polypeptide (PACAP) exerts pleiotropic effects on ventromedial nuclei (VMN) of the hypothalamus and its control of feeding and energy expenditure through the Type I PAC1 receptor (PAC1R). However, the endogenous role of PAC1R’s in the VMN and the downstream signaling responsible for PACAP’s effects are unknown. To determine the endogenous role of PAC1Rs and signaling that may explain PACAP’s pleiotropic effects, we knocked down VMN PAC1Rs and pharmacologically inhibited PKA, PKC and PAC1R trafficking. Knocking down PAC1Rs increased meal sizes, reduced total number of meals, and induced body weight gain. Inhibition of either PKA or PKC alone …

Evaluation Of Shoulder Complex Kinematics Pre And Post Rotator Cuff Repair And Effects Of Altering Rotation Sequence, Alyssa Joy Schnorenberg Apr 2022

Evaluation Of Shoulder Complex Kinematics Pre And Post Rotator Cuff Repair And Effects Of Altering Rotation Sequence, Alyssa Joy Schnorenberg

Dissertations (1934 -)

Approximately 25% of adults in the United States will sustain a rotator cuff tear in their lifetime. Rotator cuff tears can impede one's ability to perform activities of daily living and maintain functional independence. Nearly 300,000 rotator cuff repair surgeries are performed annually and aim to decrease pain, increase range of motion, and enable return to the workforce. The goal of postoperative rehabilitation is to allow healing of the repaired cuff while restoring function and range of motion, but it is demanding and may require a year. However, most rehabilitation protocols are based solely on clinical experience rather than on evidence-based …

Causal Inference In Healthcare: Approaches To Causal Modeling And Reasoning Through Graphical Causal Models, Riddhiman Adib Apr 2022

Causal Inference In Healthcare: Approaches To Causal Modeling And Reasoning Through Graphical Causal Models, Riddhiman Adib

Dissertations (1934 -)

In the era of big data, researchers have access to large healthcare datasets collected over a long period. These datasets hold valuable information, frequently investigated using traditional Machine Learning algorithms or Neural Networks. These algorithms perform great in finding patterns out of datasets (as a predictive machine); however, the models lack extensive interpretability to be used in the healthcare sector (as an explainable machine). Without exploring underlying causal relationships, the algorithms fail to explain their reasoning. Causal Inference, a relatively newer branch of Artificial Intelligence, deals with interpretability and portrays causal relationships in data through graphical models. It explores the …

Born In Defiance: The Public Career Of Virgil C. Blum, S.J., William M. Fliss Apr 2022

Born In Defiance: The Public Career Of Virgil C. Blum, S.J., William M. Fliss

Dissertations (1934 -)

This study examines the life of the American Jesuit priest, political scientist, and political activist Virgil C. Blum (1913-1990). Blum was a leading Catholic advocate for public funding for children attending non-public schools, expressed most clearly through his writings and his leadership in Citizens for Educational Freedom (CEF), a parental lobby founded in 1958. In 1973 Blum founded the Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights. Modeled on the Anti-Defamation League of B’nai B’rith, the Catholic League opposed what it saw as an entrenched anti-Catholicism in U.S. society, and it sought to protect the religious freedom of the nation’s Catholic …

Acceleration Of Computational Geometry Algorithms For High Performance Computing Based Geo-Spatial Big Data Analysis, Anmol Paudel Apr 2022

Acceleration Of Computational Geometry Algorithms For High Performance Computing Based Geo-Spatial Big Data Analysis, Anmol Paudel

Dissertations (1934 -)

Geo-Spatial computing and data analysis is the branch of computer science that deals with real world location-based data. Computational geometry algorithms are algorithms that process geometry/shapes and is one of the pillars of geo-spatial computing. Real world map and location-based data can be huge in size and the data structures used to process them extremely big leading to huge computational costs. Furthermore, Geo-Spatial datasets are growing on all V’s (Volume, Variety, Value, etc.) and are becoming larger and more complex to process in-turn demanding more computational resources. High Performance Computing is a way to breakdown the problem in ways that …

All Pairs Routing Path Enumeration Using Latin Multiplication And Julia, Haochen Sun Apr 2022

All Pairs Routing Path Enumeration Using Latin Multiplication And Julia, Haochen Sun

Dissertations (1934 -)

Enumerating all routing paths among Autonomous Systems (ASes) at an Internet-scale is an intractable problem. The Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) is the standard exterior gateway protocol through which ASes exchange reachability information. Building an efficient path enumeration tool for a given network is an essential step toward estimating the resiliency of the network to cyber security attacks, such as routing origin and path hijacking. In our work, we use the matrix Latin multiplication method to compute all possible paths among all pairs of nodes. We parallelize this computation through the domain decomposition for matrix multiplication and implement our solution in …

Gonzo Eternal, John Francis Brick Apr 2022

Gonzo Eternal, John Francis Brick

Dissertations (1934 -)

Gonzo Eternal enters the recent surge in scholarly attention to the work of Hunter S. Thompson and his practice of Gonzo journalism by examining the growing conflict between the dominant view of Gonzo journalism as Thompson’s unique and proprietary style, and the relatively new trend toward an understanding of Gonzo as a continuum of literary practice that both predates Thompson and continues to adapt and evolve beyond his death in 2005. I contend that this problem is fundamentally one of definition, and that the continued growth of the field depends on a reassessment of Thompson that reframes him from Gonzo …

Britain's Extraterrestrial Empire: Colonial Ambition, Anxiety, And Ambivalence In Early Modern Literature, Mark Edward Wisniewski Apr 2022

Britain's Extraterrestrial Empire: Colonial Ambition, Anxiety, And Ambivalence In Early Modern Literature, Mark Edward Wisniewski

Dissertations (1934 -)

This project uses the context of early modern English colonialism and empire building to examine five British authors whose fiction focuses on extraterrestrial spaces: Edmund Spenser, Margaret Cavendish, Francis Godwin, Aphra Behn, and John Milton. I frame the relationship between extraterrestrial settings and British colonialism through Jeffery Knapp’s conception of trifling, that even though early imperial England had little geopolitical power, the nation could differentiate itself as an otherworldly empire, both in origin and aim. Additionally, I build upon the connections drawn between colonialism and early modern literature by theorists such as Richard Helgerson, David Quint, and Stephen Greenblatt. I …

Intrinsic Photodynamic Study On Photocatalytic Materials, Wenhui Hu Apr 2022

Intrinsic Photodynamic Study On Photocatalytic Materials, Wenhui Hu

Dissertations (1934 -)

To relieve the global energy crisis and environmental pollution caused by the combustion of traditional fossil fuels, developing an environmental-friendly renewable energy to replace fossil fuel is urgent. Among the possible energy sources, solar energy has attracted numerous attentions because of the abundant storage. However, it is challenging to efficiently utilize and store solar energy. One attractive strategy to address this challenge is to convert solar energy to fuel through artificial photosynthesis (e.g. photocatalytic water splitting to generate H2). A technologically significant solar-driven water splitting system requires an efficient photocatalytic system that can not only effectively harvest light but also …

Conditional Risk For Ptsd Traumatically Injured Latinx Sample: Cultural X Biological Model, Claire Maria Bird Apr 2022

Conditional Risk For Ptsd Traumatically Injured Latinx Sample: Cultural X Biological Model, Claire Maria Bird

Dissertations (1934 -)

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a debilitating disorder that develops in some people following a traumatic event. Latinx communities in the U.S. are at greater risk of developing this disorder and experiencing more severe and chronic symptomology. This population has also been found to experience greater levels of dissociative experiences – possibly explaining the increased conditional risk for PTSD in this ethnic group. It remains unclear what may be connecting the experience of peritraumatic dissociation to heightened PTSD risk. The current study sought to address this gap in the literature by examining peritraumatic dissociation and the interplay between sociocultural and …

The Ethical Functions Of Deuteronomic Laws In Early Second Temple Judaism, Paul Cizek Apr 2022

The Ethical Functions Of Deuteronomic Laws In Early Second Temple Judaism, Paul Cizek

Dissertations (1934 -)

This study is about the ethical functions of Deuteronomic laws in the 3rd–1st centuries BCE: what they were and how to study them.Since the 1980’s boom in Hebrew Bible ethics studies, at least eight theses regarding the ethical functions of Deuteronomic laws in antiquity have become prominent. Though the scholars who advance these theses employ diverse methods, they commonly make the Deuteronomic laws themselves their direct objects of analysis, basing conclusions about how the laws functioned on the structure, logic, form, or historical and literary contexts of the laws. As Henry McKeating noted in 1979, however, how a law actually …

Load Balancing Algorithms For Parallel Spatial Join On Hpc Platforms, Jie Yang Apr 2022

Load Balancing Algorithms For Parallel Spatial Join On Hpc Platforms, Jie Yang

Dissertations (1934 -)

Geospatial datasets are growing in volume, complexity, and heterogeneity. For efficient execution of geospatial computations and analytics on large scale datasets, parallel processing is necessary. To exploit fine-grained parallel processing on large scale compute clusters, partitioning of skewed datasets in a load-balanced way is challenging. The workload in spatial join is data dependent and highly irregular. Moreover, wide variation in the size and density of geometries from one region of the map to another, further exacerbates the load imbalance. This dissertation focuses on spatial join operation used in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and spatial databases, where the inputs are two …

Quantitative Multidimensional Stress Assessment From Facial Videos, Lin He Apr 2022

Quantitative Multidimensional Stress Assessment From Facial Videos, Lin He

Dissertations (1934 -)

Stress has a significant impact on the physical and mental health of an individual and is a growing concern for society, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. Facial video-based stress evaluation from non-invasive cameras has proven to be a significantly more efficient method to evaluate stress in comparison to approaches that use questionnaires or wearable sensors. Plenty of classification models have been built for stress detection. However, most do not consider individual differences. Also, the results for such models are limited by a uni-dimensional definition of stress levels lacking a comprehensive quantitative definition of stress. The dissertation focuses on building a …

Assessment Of Mitochondrial Dysfunction In Lungs From Rats Exposed To Hyperoxia And The Efficacy Of Duroquinone, Swetha Ganesh Oct 2021

Assessment Of Mitochondrial Dysfunction In Lungs From Rats Exposed To Hyperoxia And The Efficacy Of Duroquinone, Swetha Ganesh

Master's Theses (2009 -)

Dissipation of mitochondrial membrane potential (ΔΨm) is a hallmark of mitochondrial dysfunction. The objective of this thesis was to use a previously developed experimental-computational approach to estimate tissue ΔΨm in intact lungs of rats exposed to hyperoxia, and to evaluate the ability of duroquinone (DQ) to reverse any hyperoxia-induced depolarization of lung Ψm. Rats were exposed to hyperoxia (>95% O2) or normoxia (room air) for 48 hrs, after which lungs were excised and connected to a ventilation-perfusion system. The experimental protocol consisted of measuring the concentration of the fluorescent dye rhodamine 6G (R6G) during three single-pass phases: loading, washing, …

Stochastic Modeling For Mobile Manipulators, Xie Jiayu Oct 2021

Stochastic Modeling For Mobile Manipulators, Xie Jiayu

Master's Theses (2009 -)

Mobile manipulators are valuable and highly desired in many fields, especially in industrial environments. However, determining the end effector position has been challenging for scenarios where the base moves at the same time that the arm follows commands to perform specific tasks. Earlier works have attempted to dynamically evaluate the problem of positioning error for mobile manipulators, but there is still room for further improvement. In this thesis, we devise a dynamical model that leverages stochastic search strategies for mobile manipulators. More specifically, we develop a dynamic model that estimates the position of the robot using an Unscented Kalman filter. …

Detecting Invasive Insects Using Uncewed Aerial Vehicles And Variational Autoencoders, Scott Daniel Stewart Oct 2021

Detecting Invasive Insects Using Uncewed Aerial Vehicles And Variational Autoencoders, Scott Daniel Stewart

Master's Theses (2009 -)

In this thesis, we use machine learning techniques to address limitations in our ability to monitor pest insect migrations. Invasive insect populations, such as the brown marmorated stink bug (BMSB), cause significant economic and environmental damages. In order to mitigate these damages, tracking BMSB migration is vital, but it also poses a challenge. The current state-of-the-art solution to track insect migrations is called mark-release-recapture. In mark-release-recapture, a researcher marks insects with a fluorescent powder, releases them back into the wild, and searches for the insects using ultra-violet flashlights at suspected migration destination locations. However, this involves a significant amount of …

Aeroacoustic Design Of An Abrasive Blasting Nozzle Using Cfd, Adam Dehli Oct 2021

Aeroacoustic Design Of An Abrasive Blasting Nozzle Using Cfd, Adam Dehli

Master's Theses (2009 -)

Current industrial abrasive blasting nozzles are often loud enough to negatively impact worker health and require employers to implement hearing conservation programs under OSHA noise exposure regulations. Significant opportunity exists for the use of modern computational fluid dynamics software (CFD) in the design of an abrasive blasting nozzle with a focus on reducing the acoustic intensity. Past work using CFD for abrasive blasting nozzle design has focused on improving productivity, ignoring aeroacoustic considerations. ANSYS Fluent software was used to investigate the effect of geometry changes to a commercially available No. 6 venturi nozzle, specifically the addition of a constant cross-section …

Deep Learning Approach For Dynamic Sampling For High-Throughput Nano-Desi Msi, David Helminiak Oct 2021

Deep Learning Approach For Dynamic Sampling For High-Throughput Nano-Desi Msi, David Helminiak

Master's Theses (2009 -)

Mass Spectrometry Imaging (MSI) extracts molecular mass data to form visualizations of molecular spatial distributions. The involved scanning procedure is conducted by moving a probe across and around a rectilinear grid, as in the case of nanoscale Desorption Electro-Spray Ionization (nano-DESI) MSI, where singular measurements can take up to ~5 seconds to acquire high-resolution (better than 10 μm) results. This temporal expense creates a high inefficiency in sample processing and throughput. For example, in a high-resolution nano-DESI study, a single mouse uterine tissue section (2.5 mm by 1.7 mm) had an acquisition time of ~4 hours to acquire 104,400 pixels. …

Mid-Movement Error Corrections After Visual And Haptic Perturbations Reflect Latency And Performance Differences, Pablo Gonzalez Polanco Oct 2021

Mid-Movement Error Corrections After Visual And Haptic Perturbations Reflect Latency And Performance Differences, Pablo Gonzalez Polanco

Master's Theses (2009 -)

We examined a key attribute of sensory motor skill: the capability to adjust ongoing actions to correct performance errors that arise during the execution of a task. Fifteen subjects grasped the handle of a horizontal 2D planar robot that enacted a small viscous resistance to the arm movement. The subjects initiated interception movements using a prompted Go cue to quickly catch a pseudo-randomly moving target. On some trials, the robot viscosity field or the target’s motion (speed) was altered without any warning at the time of the Go cue. The viscosity could be increased which made it more difficult to …

Crowdsourced Archiving Of The January 6th Us Capitol Insurrection: An R/Datahoarders Case Study, Edward Miezio Chapman Oct 2021

Crowdsourced Archiving Of The January 6th Us Capitol Insurrection: An R/Datahoarders Case Study, Edward Miezio Chapman

Master's Theses (2009 -)

The crowdsourced archiving that occurred in the wake of the January 6th US Capitol insurrection exemplifies the potential for agile, collaborative evidence gathering during a crisis situation. This paper studies the r/DataHoarders subcommunity of Reddit and the collective and spontaneous archiving project that users initiated. Users were drawn to the thread out of a desire to contribute to law enforcement efforts, enact punitive justice upon the rioters, engage in public discourse, and preserve information for posterity. They did this by gathering and preserving social media evidence that may have otherwise been lost. I discovered that this constituted a crowdsourced archive …

Study Of Extensions To The Linear Sampling Method For Electromagnetic Inverse Scattering, Yeasmin Sultana Oct 2021

Study Of Extensions To The Linear Sampling Method For Electromagnetic Inverse Scattering, Yeasmin Sultana

Master's Theses (2009 -)

The linear sampling method (LSM) is a simple and effective qualitative method to reconstruct the support of unknown object by solving inverse scattering problem. The solution is done based on the field radiated by the elementary source located in a set of test points. In this thesis, the LSM formulation, limitations of standard LSM and extensions of LSM are discussed. Standard LSM can reconstruct simply connected objects, but it fails in case of concave or not simply connected objects. However, it can reconstruct the convex hull for such objects. Some extensions to LSM have been proposed to avoid these limitations. …

The Role Of Hostile And Benevolent Sexism On Women's Career Aspirations And Self-Doubt In Masculine And Feminine Majors, Mary Tait Oct 2021

The Role Of Hostile And Benevolent Sexism On Women's Career Aspirations And Self-Doubt In Masculine And Feminine Majors, Mary Tait

Master's Theses (2009 -)

Women experience hostile sexism and benevolent sexism in various aspects of their lives and the effects of these experiences have been shown to greatly affect their performance in career-related domains. Researchers have posited that this reduction in performance is related to self-doubt (Dardenne et al., 2007; Kuchynka et al., 2018) which can affect women’s careers long-term. However, the effects of self-doubt on women’s careers may vary depending on the stereotyped context of the environment. The current study examined if the relationship between experiences with sexism and career aspirations is mediated by self-doubt. Further, it was examined if the relationships changed …

Micromechanics Of Additively Manufactured Materials Under Dynamic Loading, Christopher Rueben Johnson Oct 2021

Micromechanics Of Additively Manufactured Materials Under Dynamic Loading, Christopher Rueben Johnson

Dissertations (1934 -)

Ongoing works aim to develop a predictive computational framework whichcan be utilized to shorten the design and certification cycle of additively manufactured (AM) 304L stainless steel (SS304L). High fidelity experiments are utilized to validate and parameterize the computational framework. Results have detailed differing mechanical responses across a breadth of strain rates for wrought and AM SS304L. Differences are attributed to the microstructural properties resulting from the fabrication and treatment of the materials. This work aims to supplement preexisting high strain rate compressive strength experimental data sets to further quantify process-structure-property (PSP) relationships in development of the computational framework. Materials investigated …
