The Resurrection Of Christ: A Bayesian Analysis Of Explanatory Hypotheses, Nicola Jérôme Liebi Jan 2020

The Resurrection Of Christ: A Bayesian Analysis Of Explanatory Hypotheses, Nicola Jérôme Liebi

Masters Theses

The goal of this thesis is to determine under which circumstances a supernatural hypothesis should be preferred over the most probable natural hypothesis to explain a set of historical facts. The supernatural hypotheses include the objective vision hypothesis and the resurrection hypothesis, while the subjective vision hypothesis is taken to be the most probable natural hypothesis. Each of them can be found in the recent literature on the Resurrection and is still advocated by major proponents. The facts by which these three hypotheses are judged are agreed upon by most scholars. They include (1) Jesus’ death by crucifixion, (2) the …

Codes, Cryptography, And The Mceliece Cryptosystem, Bethany Matsick Jan 2020

Codes, Cryptography, And The Mceliece Cryptosystem, Bethany Matsick

Senior Honors Theses

Over the past several decades, technology has continued to develop at an incredible rate, and the importance of properly securing information has increased significantly. While a variety of encryption schemes currently exist for this purpose, a number of them rely on problems, such as integer factorization, that are not resistant to quantum algorithms. With the reality of quantum computers approaching, it is critical that a quantum-resistant method of protecting information is found. After developing the proper background, we evaluate the potential of the McEliece cryptosystem for use in the post-quantum era by examining families of algebraic geometry codes that allow …

Brexit: Viable Options To Avoid Crisis, Samuel Diercks Jan 2020

Brexit: Viable Options To Avoid Crisis, Samuel Diercks

Senior Honors Theses

Abstract

This paper covers the viable options that the United Kingdom may take to avoid economic and political crisis as they exit the European Union. There are several benefits and detriments to the exit. Some benefits include economic and political freedom from a slowly degrading system and increased options for global expansion. Detriments include loss in Foreign Direct Investment and trade with their larger European Union partners. The options as they exit are to either join the European Economic Area or leave with no deal and set up trade agreements later. This paper draws on recent studies on the effects …

Substance Use Education For Concussion Patients, Nicole Whitmoyer Jan 2020

Substance Use Education For Concussion Patients, Nicole Whitmoyer

Senior Honors Theses

Substance use and traumatic brain injury are independently dangerous to an individual. These factors can compound and produce even worse effects if they cooccur during adolescence. Despite the scientific literature demonstrating the cumulative problems associated with these all cooccurring, many students and teachers know very little about traumatic brain injury recovery and the impact substance use can have on that process. Professionals who interact with at-risk individuals for traumatic brain injuries, such as adolescents and athletes, have little knowledge regarding substance use and traumatic brain injury, however a seminar model was effective for developing content knowledge and changes in attitude …

Communication Patterns Between Physicians And Physician Assistants, Joey Valentini Jan 2020

Communication Patterns Between Physicians And Physician Assistants, Joey Valentini

Senior Honors Theses

Communication is imperative to the success of any team-based organization. In healthcare, it is common for patient outcomes to be affected by variables including but not limited to the quality of extraprofessional communication. Physicians and physician assistants are two meaningful and valued members of the medical care team, and the need for collaboration amongst each other is irrefutable. Physicians are the trusted leaders of any medical team, having completed the most amount of schooling and training. Physician assistants are versatile, economically advantageous, and skill-proficient mid-level practitioners that are required by law to be supervised by a collaborating physician. The working …

Shift Work: Gut Health And Metabolic Disease, Hailey Lane

Senior Honors Theses

The number of people engaged in shift work continues to rise, and with it the research linking shift work to various diseases and conditions. Shift work changes the body’s sleeping patterns and circadian rhythms which has an effect on all parts of the body including the heart, immunity, cancer development, and inflammatory processes. Altered sleeping patterns and circadian rhythms change the composition and anatomy of the gut and microbiome, which in turn affects the development of metabolic diseases. Shift work also changes one’s eating patterns and habits. Altered eating habits similarly changes the composition and anatomy of the gut and …

A Relentless War: America, Israel, And The Fight Against Terrorism, Elyse Keener

Senior Honors Theses

For Israel, terrorism has plagued the nation since its beginning. Terrorism rears its ugly head in a variety of ways and for a variety of reasons; however, in both the United States and Israel, Islamic extremism has presented itself as the largest threat. Since its birth as a nation, the United States has been involved in numerous conflicts, from the Revolutionary War to World War II and beyond. These wars were fought between nation-states and traditional powers, but since the attacks on 9/11, the United States finds itself in a new kind of conflict against a different kind of enemy. …

Finding A Single Equation To Represent Urea Evaporation, Sublimation, And Decomposition In Selective Catalytic Reduction Systems, Noah Hertzler Jan 2020

Finding A Single Equation To Represent Urea Evaporation, Sublimation, And Decomposition In Selective Catalytic Reduction Systems, Noah Hertzler

Senior Honors Theses

Aqueous Urea used in Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) Systems undergoes three sequential processes that result in ammonia being produced to reduce harmful NOx emissions: Water evaporation, Urea sublimation, and Urea decomposition into ammonia and isocyanic acid. While these phases can be simplified by modeling the Urea as pure water, accuracy is sacrificed to do so. In order to make SCR modelling both accurate and simple, this project set out to find an equation that could represent all three processes. Simulations were run in ANSYS and Particle to generate a set of data, then an empirical equation was created to model …

Help-Seeking Stigma And Attitudes In College Students And Parents, Samantha Sperling Jan 2020

Help-Seeking Stigma And Attitudes In College Students And Parents, Samantha Sperling

Senior Honors Theses

Help-seeking stigma is a hindrance to obtaining treatment for mental illness and is related to people’s attitudes toward seeking help. Therefore, learning about the various types of stigma and gaining predictive knowledge of the constructs has value. Self-stigma and perceived stigma of others, as well as the attitudes people hold towards seeking help, were compared in college students and their parents. A sample of college students at a private Christian university and their parents were surveyed using the Self-Stigma of Seeking Help (SSOSH) scale, the Perception of Stigmatization by Others for Seeking Help (PSOSH) scale, and a short form of …

God And The Machine: A Correlational Study On Mobile Phone Dependence, Religious Coping, And Mental Health, Rachel Bolme Jan 2020

God And The Machine: A Correlational Study On Mobile Phone Dependence, Religious Coping, And Mental Health, Rachel Bolme

Senior Honors Theses

Research on the various effects of mobile phones did not begin to be published until after they had already been integrated into society. To date, the results of various studies looking into the relationship between mobile phone use and mental health demonstrate that phones, if used in problematic ways, have negative effects on mental health. Even so, there are no studies looking into problematic mobile phone use and how it correlates with spirituality and positive religious coping as well as mental health. Due to this gap in the research, this anonymous online study was designed to look into correlations between …

Several barriers that caused this delay were found including, delay in room cleaning, nurse staff shortage, and inability to give report to the nurse receiving the patient. In an attempt to combat this delay which may be caused by a difficulty in giving patient report, …

Youth Decline In Church Growth And Attendance, Marion Diane Jones Jan 2020

Youth Decline In Church Growth And Attendance, Marion Diane Jones

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Youth attendance in the church has declined in the recent past. The reason for their decline is that they no longer find a church to be socially and spiritually relevant to their lives. The paper seeks to provide a solution to the problem through spiritual formation and increasing the depth of youth programs so that they can remain socially relevant to the lives of the young people. This will be done by encouraging youth people to know who Jesus is and how to have a personal relationship with him through faith.
