The phenomenon of "unmixing" has been demonstrated in microfluidic mixers, but here we manipulate laminar flow streams back to their original positions in order to extend the operational utility of an analytical device where no mixing is desired. Using grooves in the channel wall, we passively focus a sample stream with two sheath streams to center it in a microchannel for optical analysis. Even though the sample stream is completely surrounded by sheath fluid, reversing the orientation of the grooves in the channel walls returns the sample stream to its original position with respect to the sheath streams. The objective of this work is to present a critical review of the application of the tissue residue approach (TRA) in ecological risk and/or impact assessment (ERA) of chemical stressors and environmental criteria development. A secondary goal is to develop a framework for integrating the TRA into ecological assessments along with traditional, exposure concentration-based assessment approaches. Although widely recognized for its toxicological appeal, the utility of the TRA in specific applications will depend on numerous factors, such as chemical properties, exposure characteristics, assessment type, availability of tissue residue-response data, and ability to quantify chemical exposure. Significant advances have been made in human health and ecological risk assessment over the last decade. Substantial challenges, however, remain in providing credible scientific information in a timely and efficient manner to support chemical risk assessment and management decisions. A major challenge confronting risk managers is the need for critical information to address risk uncertainties in large chemical inventories such as high- and medium-production-volume industrial chemicals or pesticide inert ingredients. An optical basicity scale of various ionic liquids (IL) anions has been determined by UV-Vis absorption spectroscopy. The indicator complex [Ni(tmen)(acac)][B(Ph)4] (tmen = tetramethylethylendiamine, acac = acetylacetonate) shows to be a sensitive probe as the position of the 3A2g(F) → 3T1g(F) absorption maximum of square planar to octahedral Ni2+ shifts distinctly depending on the electron donor ability of the respective ionic liquid anion. If the Lewis basicity of the anion becomes stronger a change to a tetrahedral coordination around Ni2+ is observed. Here the 3T1(F) → 3T2(F) and 3T1(F) → 3T1(P) transitions are helpful for monitoring the IL anion basicity. …

Ionic liquids are shown to be good solvents for elemental sulfur, selenium, phosphorus and tellurium, and can be designed to maximise the solubility of these elements. The presence of the [S3]˙− radical anion in diluted solutions of sulfur in some ionic liquids has been confirmed, and is the origin of their intense blue colour (cf. lapis lazuli).

The most impressive feature of the crystal structure of IrPr6Cl11 is chains of face-sharing {Pr6} octahedra that encapsulate, alternatingly, iridium atoms and chloride ions, according to the formulation {(Ir,Cl)Pr6}Cl10. An alternative description of the structure is the connection of isolated {IrPr6} clusters that are surrounded in a mixed {ZR6}Xi12/{ZR6}Xi8 type by chlorido ligands with a rather complex connectivity, {IrPr6}(Cli−a−a4/3Cla−i−a8/3Cli−a6/2Cla−i6/2)e(Cli−i2/2)f, to a three-dimensional structure of tetragonally packed cluster-complex chains.

The Cognitive Interview (CI) is a well-established protocol for interviewing witnesses. The current article presents a study space analysis of laboratory studies of the CI together with an empirical meta-analysis summarizing the past 25 years of research. The study space comprises 57 published articles (65 experiments) on the CI, providing an assessment of the boundary conditions underlying the analysis and application of this interview protocol. The current meta-analysis includes 46 published articles, including 20 articles published since the last meta-analysis conducted a decade earlier (Ko¨hnken, Milne, Memon, & Bull, 1999). Microwave reaction of Ln(OAc)3·xH2O, Ln = Gd, Eu; OAc = acetate) with and in the ionic liquid [C4mim][BF4] (C4mim = 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium) allows the fast and efficient synthesis of small, uniform, oxygen-free lanthanide nanofluorides with excellent photophysical behaviour. For GdF3 : Eu3+ nanoparticles a quantum efficiency of up to 145% was determined.

Within the Byzantine ecclesiastical tradition, shrines — architectural structures which both enclosed and revealed saints’ remains — defined human bodies within the church space in a remarkable way. Starting in the fourth century, it became customary to exhume and move entire bodies, to permit their fragmentation, and to expose them in architectural settings other than the altar table in the sanctuary space. Receiving Christianity only in 988/9, the East Slavic Rus' expressly appropriated art and architecture based on Byzantine models and elaborated their own styles. *Kiev, *Novgorod, and *Vladimir (Suzdalia) define the major foci of Rus' accomplishments in the pre-Mongolian period, before the 1230s. Only after the battle at *Kulikovo (1380) did monumental arts revive. And only when Prince Ivan the Great (r. 1462–1505) commissioned architects Aristotele Fioravanti and Alevisio Novi to work in the *Kremlin did the Italian Renaissance significantly influence Russian architecture.

Studies have already demonstrated the successful use of linear semiactive damping devices, such as variable orifice (VO) dampers, for semiactive TMD systems. More recently, nonlinear semiactive damping devices, such as magnetorheological (MR) dampers, have also been shown to be effective for semiactive control of TMDs. Though semiactive dampers differ widely, with responses ranging from linear (VO) to nonlinear (MR), criteria for choosing an optimal semiacive device for a TMD have not been rigorously developed. Computations at the CASPT2, CBS-QB3, and B3LYP levels of theory demonstrate that β-substitution of vinyl cations with π-donors switches the ground state of these ions from the familiar closed-shell singlet state to a carbene-like triplet state similar to the electronic state of triplet phenyl cations. Although the parent vinyl cation is a ground-state singlet species with a very large energy gap to the lowest energy triplet state, substituting the β hydrogens with just one strong π-donor (e.g., NH2, NMe2, OMe) or two moderate π-donors (e.g., F, OH, Ar, vinyl) makes the triplet state the computed ground electronic state. Carbon monoxide oxidation over ruthenium catalysts has shown an unusual catalytic behavior. Here we report a particle size effect on CO oxidation over Ru nanoparticle (NP) catalysts. Uniform Ru NPs with a tunable particle size from 2 to 6 nm were synthesized by a polyol reduction of Ru(acac)3 precursor in the presence of poly(vinylpyrrolidone) stabilizer. The measurement of catalytic activity of CO oxidation over two-dimensional Ru NPs arrays under oxidizing reaction conditions (40 Torr CO and 100 Torr O2) showed an activity dependence on the Ru NP size. This paper describes an approach to autonomous robotic control that enables cooperative, tactically correct robotic behaviors that human teammates understand. For maximum effectiveness, unmanned systems (UMSs) must be able to support dismounted warfighters in high-intensity, high-operational-tempo (OPTEMPO) situations without becoming a source of distraction. Current models of robotic control require overt human tasking, limiting robotics to low OPTEMPO tasks. The Combat Causal Reasoner (CCR) proposes to change the paradigm of UMS autonomy by enabling UMSs to cooperate with humans without expecting the UMS to perceive the environment as a human would. Electronic structure calculations in the local spin-density approximation have been carried out on the recently synthesized trimer (CrCl 3 ) 3 exhibiting antiferromagnetic ordering below T N =55 K. The calculated magnetic coupling constant, the paramagnetic Curie temperature, and the decrease of the magnetic moment below T N are well reproduced by the calculations. An interpretation of the spin structure is given that is consistent with all experimental data currently available.

From the 9th-century conversion to Christianity until the 11th century, the ecclesiastical art and architecture of the Serbs, both Orthodox and Roman Catholic, shared the concurrent accomplishments of the Croats, Latins, and Greeks. All of these groups cohabited the territories between the rivers Bojana and Cetina in Duklja (Zeta, Montenegro), Zahumlje (Herzegovina), and their littoral. Wall *paintings, donor *portraits, inscriptions in Greek and Latin, and architectural *sculpture on *windows, portals, capitals, *chancel screens, *ciboria, and baptismal fonts, reveal influences of pre-Romanesque, Romanesque, and Byzantine models. Such persistent attacks lead many warriors in the poem to encounter densely wooded areas with trepidation and even at times with explicit violence towards these places. However, through its use of several arresting locus amoenus passages, the Morte demonstrates alternative ways for soldiers to experience natural landscapes. Microemulsion polymerizations are attractive for investigating compartmentalization effects in heterogeneous reversible addition - fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerizations because the propagating radicals are segregated into surfactant stabilized polymer particles, which drastically reduces the effects of biradical termination, Also, microemulsion polymerizations do not involve the large monomer droplets that are present in emulsion and miniemulsion polymerizations. A unique challenge for the Orion Crew Exploration Vehicle is the need for a novel cursor control device (CCD) that allows the crew to interact with display formats while seated and restrained. Display formats will contain "controllable elements" that will be used for input by astronauts, and will most likely not be laid out in a rectilinear grid. A four-way "caged" castle switch on the CCD was designed to travel only to controllable elements toward decreasing erroneous cursor movements. Spectinabilin is a rare nitrophenyl-substituted polyketide metabolite. Here we report the cloning and heterologous expression of the spectinabilin gene cluster from Streptomyces spectabilis. Unexpectedly, this gene cluster is evolutionarily closer to the aureothin gene cluster than to the spectinabilin gene cluster from Streptomyces orinoci. Moreover, the two nearly identical spectinabilin gene clusters use a distinctly different regulation mechanism.

Monodisperse sub-10 nm (6.5 nm) sized Rh nanocrystals with (111) and (100) surface structures were synthesized by a seedless polyol reduction in ethylene glycol, with poly(vinylpyrrolidone) as a capping ligand. When using [Rh(Ac)2]2 as the metal precursor, (111)-oriented Rh nanopolyhedra containing 76% (111)-twinned hexagons (in 2D projection) were obtained; whereas, when employing RhCl3 as the metal precursor in the presence of alkylammonium bromide, such as tetramethylammonium bromide and trimethyl(tetradecyl)ammonium bromide, (100)-oriented Rh nanocubes were obtained with 85% selectivity. The {100} faces of the Rh nanocrystals are stabilized by chemically adsorbed Br− ions from alkylammonium bromides, which led to (100)-oriented nanocubes. …

The White Paper suggests important reforms that will reduce the likelihood of false confessions resulting from police interrogation. The research underlying these suggested reforms has yielded significant advances in our understanding of factors associated with false confessions. As we move forward, we encourage the development of empirically based approaches that provide a viable alternative to current practice. In doing so, we suggest that researchers pursue a positive psychological approach that involves partnering with practitioners to systematically develop interrogative methods that are shown to be more diagnostic. In this paper, a new type of sensing technique for damage localization on large civil structures is proposed. Specifically, changes in strain are detected using a capacitance sensor built with a soft-stretchable dielectric polymer with attached stretchable metal film electrodes. This sensor is sensitive to a change in strain that causes a change in its capacitance. Fixed to a structure, small changes in the strain can be monitored directly by measuring the change in the capacitance of the unit. This technology allows for simple yet highly accurate measurements of cracks occurring due to deformation, aging, or other structural failures. The …

Although archivists have engaged in analog information retrieval (IR) for many decades, automated archival IR is relatively unexamined in either IR or archival literature. The strength of primary source materials lies in their ability to support inference and deduction through the provision of evidence, through both content and context of documents. The hierarchical and spatial structures of archival records may be leveraged in the search for retrieving this kind of relational evidence.
