School-Based Yoga Intervention Programs Promoting Self-Regulation And Adaptive Functioning Outcomes.Pdf, Jennifer K. Ishaq Jan 2021

School-Based Yoga Intervention Programs Promoting Self-Regulation And Adaptive Functioning Outcomes.Pdf, Jennifer K. Ishaq

ETD Archive

Self-regulation deficits in childhood are related to difficulty focusing, aggressive behavior, and poor communication and coping skills. In contrast, strong self-regulation skills are associated with better adaptive functioning outcomes including stronger academic performance, social competence, and stress management, which may act as a protective factor for adverse outcomes in adulthood. A promising intervention to address self-regulatory deficits is school-based mindfulness and yoga programs. Mindful yoga practice can promote the ability to focus better, avoid fights, and calm down. With use of archival data, the present study aimed to analyze changes in student’s self-regulation and adaptive functioning outcomes post school-based yoga …

The purpose of this study was two-fold, to determine practicing medical speech language pathologists' (SLP) belief of importance of standardization in dysphagia diets and to determine their knowledge and utilization of corresponding standardized terminologies. Three main research questions were examined: (1) What are SLPs’ beliefs regarding the importance ofstandardization in dysphagia diet prescription? (2) How familiar are medical SLPs with standardized dysphagia diet level terminologies? (3) How often do these SLPs utilize correct, standardized levels when treating patients with dysphagia? This qualitative study included 51 participants who were medical SLPs employed in hospitals, skilled nursing facilities, and rehabilitation centers across …

Subharmonic Frequencies In Guitar Spectra, Leah M. Bunnell Jan 2021

Subharmonic Frequencies In Guitar Spectra, Leah M. Bunnell

ETD Archive

Throughout this thesis, evidence is shown that suggests the existence of subharmonic frequencies in the Classical Spanish Acoustic Guitar and Fender Squier Electric Guitar spectra. The classic subharmonic undertone series mimics that of the harmonic overtone series, except that the fundamental frequency is divided by integer values instead of multiplied by integer values. Subharmonics that do not fit the classic subharmonic undertone series criteria are still classified as subharmonics, although subharmonics that do fit the criteria are emphasized. Throughout this manuscript, the author’s original experimental procedures and results are presented. Individual tones were recorded on both guitars on every string …

The Development Of A Systematic Discharge Planning Process For The Care Of Copd Patients In A Small Urban Community Hospital, Michele A. Barton-Verdi

ETD Archive

Background: Several attempts have been made to examine factors that influence 30-day readmissions in a hospital setting to ensure that inpatient care is accompanied by an effective post-discharge plan that can decrease 30-day readmissions to guide hospitals to use practices that increase hospitals ‘quality implications (Shah et al., 2015; Kripalani et al., 2007; Rinne et al., 2017, Jenks, Williams and Coleman, 2009, Shah, Press, Husingh-Scheetz & White, 2016; Sickler et al., 2015; Pruitt, 2018; Hansen et al., 2013; Simmering et al., 2016; Alper, O’Malley, & Greenwald, 2019). Purpose: To determine the role of post-discharge care in 30-day readmissions along with …

The Effects Of Musical Instrument Gender On Spoken Word Recognition, Bethany G. Cox Jan 2021

The Effects Of Musical Instrument Gender On Spoken Word Recognition, Bethany G. Cox

ETD Archive

One area of auditory processing research involves investigations into how spoken words are processed. When hearing spoken words, in addition to the word itself, listeners process other information, such as the gender of the talker. Both spoken words and other sounds humans encounter in their environment are managed in the auditory system. A common example of an environmental sound is music. Additional research has demonstrated that participants associate musical instruments with genders. In the current research study, I examined the effects that musical instrument gender and talker gender have on spoken word recognition. Female participants heard a moment of silence …

The Role Of The Speech Language Pathologist In The Treatment Of Patients With Percutaneous Endoscopic Gastrostomy Tubes, Lindsay M. Mark

ETD Archive

Speech language pathologists (SLPs) working in medical settings often evaluate and treat individuals with dysphagia. When a patient with dysphagia is not safely receiving sufficient nutrients per oral, an alternative feeding method may be recommended especially for those with a neurological disorder. Percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy is the most common enteral feeding method and is often recommended by the speech language pathologist. However, the role of the speech language pathologist treating these patients is not clearly defined in the literature. This qualitative study aims to better understand the role that the SLP plays in treating pediatrics and adults with alternative feeding …

The Intergenerational Transmission Of Violence, Rejection Sensitivity, And The Impact Of Self-Regulation: A Mechanism Study Of Adolescent Dating Abuse, Evan J. Basting Jan 2021

The Intergenerational Transmission Of Violence, Rejection Sensitivity, And The Impact Of Self-Regulation: A Mechanism Study Of Adolescent Dating Abuse, Evan J. Basting

ETD Archive

The association between experiencing parent-to-child aggression and later dating abuse (DA) in adolescence is well-supported by previous empirical findings and theoretical frameworks, including the intergenerational transmission of violence theory, social learning theory, and relationship continuity theory. Less is known about what underlies this association. Among a sample of high school students, this study tested the hypothesis that rejection sensitivity would mediate between parent-to-child aggression and adolescent DA. Additionally, this study hypothesized that greater self-regulation would buffer the association between rejection sensitivity and adolescent DA. Although rejection sensitivity did not independently mediate between parent-to-child aggression and DA, self-regulation interacted with rejection …

The purpose of the present study is to examine how parental sexual communication, including sexual education taught in the home, and parental-adolescent relationship quality are associated with adolescent risky sexual behaviors and mental health outcomes. The study hypothesizes that (A) higher levels of parental-adolescent relationship quality will be related to a decrease in adolescent risky sexual behaviors, (B) sexual communication between the parental figure and adolescent combined with sexual education taught in the home will act as a moderator on the relationship between parental-adolescent relationship quality and adolescent risky sexual behaviors, (C) adolescents who report higher levels of risky sexual …

Understanding The Illness Experience Of Veterans With Dementia, Amanda M. Macneil Jan 2021

Understanding The Illness Experience Of Veterans With Dementia, Amanda M. Macneil

ETD Archive

Not all individuals with dementia (IWDs) experience the progression of their illness similarly. Though recent work has given attention to how IWDs experience the cluster of symptoms in dementia, little work has been conducted with the unique population of veterans with dementia. Stressing the ability of IWDs to self-report and guided by the Stress Process Model for Individuals with Dementia, this study examined the relationships between depressive symptoms and various aspects of the illness experience including objective cognition, perceived memory difficulty, perceived functional difficulty, and dyadic relationship strain. The sample includes IWDs with mild to severe dementia who are veterans …

Two Paths To Commitment: A Moderated Mediation Model, Ashley Moroney Jan 2021

Two Paths To Commitment: A Moderated Mediation Model, Ashley Moroney

ETD Archive

This study examines organizational commitment in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic through two similar, yet distinct, pathways. Using a foundation of existing social and organizational psychology concepts, researchers predict that continuance commitment will be influenced by the presence of pandemic policies. That relationship is predicted to be mediated by the perceived risk of catching COVID-19 at work, and the relationship between pandemic policy presence and perceived risk will be moderated by belief in the pandemic. Similarly, researchers predict that affective commitment will also be influenced by the presence of pandemic policies. That relationship is predicted to be mediated by …
