This qualitative study uses critical theory, autoethnography, and in-depth interviews with vegans to explore and analyze the initial impetus to become vegan, the sustaining motivation to persist, the impact the diet and associated practices have had on the participant, and vegan's assessment of omnivore's eating practices. In-depth interviews with three vegans in each of the following professions were conducted: medical doctor, registered dietitian, farmer, professional animal activist, and philosophy professor. Participants were asked to reflect on "narratives of experience" (Caelli, 2001), the story created from their interview. The recent push for accountability based on student achievement, by means of standardized testing, has resulted in the realization that urban students are not performing as well as their suburban counterparts. This gap is even more pronounced in the area of mathematics. Many factors contribute to poor performance on student achievement. Among these are family values and climate, school environment, peer pressure, and test-taking anxiety. A student's judgment of their capability to accomplish a task or succeed in an activity, or self-efficacy, is a key factor. Universities are frequently assumed to be essential contributors to regional economic development although conclusive evidence that universities trigger economic growth within their region does not exist. This dissertation presents a model that characterizes the influence of university research on regional economic outcomes, changes of total regional employment and gross metropolitan product. A foot arch is a multi-segmented curved structure which acts as a spring during locomotion. It is well known that ligaments are important components contributing to this spring-like property of the arch. In addition, intrinsic and extrinsic foot muscles contribute to arch support. According to the windlass foot model, arch height and midfoot joint orientation change during gait. However, it is not known whether altered joint configurations result in increased joint stress during gait. In the first part of this dissertation, we systematically validated the application of molecular weight cut-off ultrafiltration in separation and enrichment of low-molecular-weight peptides from human serum. Under optimized conditions, both free-phase and bound LMW peptides could be separated and enriched. The method proved to be highly efficient and reproducible coupled with MALDI-TOF MS proteomic pattern analysis. Three marker peaks were found to be eligible for distinguishing normal and ovarian cancer samples. A novel organic solvent precipitation method coupled with enzymatic deglycosylation was also developed for biomarker detection from human serum. The Rel/NF-kB family of inducible transcription factors are evolutionarily conserved structurally and functionally, from insects to humans. They are ubiquitously expressed in a number of mature cell types, playing a pivotal role regulating cell growth, differentiation and apoptosis. Under normal circumstances, the proliferation of new cells is tightly regulated, as is the programmed lifespan of most cells, occasionally however cells loose their responsiveness to growth control mechanisms, resulting in a tumor or neoplasm. Combining students with different ability levels in the same classes, termed mixed ability grouping, is a controversial educational issue. Advocates of mixed ability grouping see this approach as a solution to meeting the demands of the NCLB Act as well as ameliorating the achievement gap between black and white students. This study presents a tool that has been developed to measure and subsequently improve the sustainability performance of a building over its entire life-cycle while still at the conceptual design stage. This forecasting tool is called GREENOMETER-7. GREENOMETER-7 is a LCA tool and it evaluates the projected building at two levels: micro- and macro-assessment. The current investigation presents a reactivation pathway of the exogenously inhibited H-cluster (viz., by O2, or OH-, which metabolizes to H2O), for both vacuum and aqueous enzyme phase. The H-cluster is the catalytic site of [Fe-Fe]-hydrogenase, with the latter extracted from Desulfovibrio desulfuricans (Dd) bacteria. It consists of proximal iron, Fep, and distal Fed subunit, [Fep-Fed], which is bridged by di(thiomethyl)amine (DTMA) ligand, and a proximal cubane subunit, [Fe4-S4]2+p. [Fep-Fed] is coordinated by two cyanides (CN-), two terminal carbonyls (COt), and a bridging carbonyl (COb)*. An Fe atom from [Fe4-S4]2+p connects Fep through a cysteinyl sulfur (of Cys382). Microfluidic platforms for magnetic cell separation were developed and investigated for isolation of magnetic particles and magnetically tagged cells from a fluidic sample. Two types of magnetic separation platforms were considered: an Isodynamic Open Gradient Magnetic Sorter (OGMS) and a multistage bio-ferrograph. Miniaturized magnets were designed using magnetostatic simulation software, microfluidic channels were fabricated using microfabrication technology and magnetic separation was investigated using video microscopy and digital image processing. Thrombin generation is the culminating stage of the blood coagulation process. Thrombin is obtained from prothrombin (the substrate) in a reaction catalyzed by the prothrombinase complex (the enzyme). The prothrombinase complex is composed of factor Xa (the enzyme), factor Va (the cofactor) associated in the presence of calcium ions on a negatively charged cell membrane. Factor Xa, alone, can activate prothrombin to thrombin however, the rate of conversion is not physiologically relevant for survival. Incorporation of factor Va into prothrombinase accelerates the rate of prothrombinase activity by 300,000-fold, and provides the physiological pathway of thrombin generation. The long-term goal of …

The public administration literature is inundated with books and articles despairing about the legitimacy crisis in the field. There have been numerous bases proposed for legitimizing the administrative state, including expertise, virtue or public service, and leadership and vision. Yet the issue remains contested, and the lack of agreement has wide reaching implications. One under-examined implication is the role that this tenuous legitimacy has in weakening the administrative state's ability to temper anti-government sentiment. The foundress of the Good Shepherd Sisters started a convent-based social service institution for vulnerable women and girls in Europe that evolved into a postsecondary education system in the United States for adolescent girls remanded by the judicial system. Recently, polymerization science has assumed an increasing relevance in many applications, including orthopedic and dental biomaterials. Current technologies are based on the use of photochemically reactive systems, which are suited to absorb light to produce primary radical species capable of initiating polymerization. Acylphosphine oxides and acylphosphonates are known to be very effective photoinitiators for various unsaturated polymeric systems. The high reactivity observed was ascribed to the phosphinyl and phosphinoyl radicals generated. This dissertation utilizes the history of ideas to explore the philosophy of Catharine Macaulay, an eighteenth-century historian and philosopher, for application to contemporary American Public Administration. Macaulay's view of human nature is paradoxical. Her characterization of man as corrupt and seduced by power is countered by her view that man is perfectible and capable of good works. The darker side of Macaulay's vision supports government that checks power through the expansion of democracy, advocates the separation of powers, and adheres to the rule of law. In this respect she resembles a Lockean liberal. The more magnanimous side of Macaulay reveres …

It has been estimated that 4.6 million persons have heart failure, and 400,000 to 700,000 new cases develop each year and the U.S. Hospital discharges for HF rose from 399,000 in 1979 to 1,099,000 in 2004 according to the National Hospital Discharge Survey. Atrial fibrillation is the most common sustained cardiac arrhythmia in the United States. Neural mechanisms behind fatigue and cancer related fatigue (CRF) are not well known. Recent research has shown dissociation between changes in brain and muscle signals during voluntary muscle fatigue, which may suggest weakening of functional corticomuscular coupling (fCMC). The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of the Core Plus Mathematics Project in terms of raising students' mathematics achievement. The study utilized Iowa Test of Educational Development (ITED) mathematics score data for 454 minority and low-income students. An Individual Growth Model revealed that Core Plus participants' initial status was statistically significantly higher than their traditional counterparts. Over a three-year period, Core Plus participants' total ITED mathematics score growth decelerated significantly. However, the Core Plus participants remained slightly higher than the traditional students at the end of the three-year period. The study recommends use of other measures …

While war has historically been considered a masculine endeavor, a relatively large number of these posters depict the female form. Adhesion and proliferation of UMR 106-01 osteoblast cells were studied on various surface modified titanium materials such as polished, sandblasted, anodized and alkaline treated. Anodization of polished surface in Hydrofluoric acid developed nano-tubes, while NaOH treatment produced spongy microporous morphology. Test samples were coated with non-adhesive protein bovine serum albumin and compared with fibronectin coated specimens. The adhesion study lasted for 4 hrs, where osteoblast cells were cultured in serum free medium.
