Detrital Zircon Geochronology And Evolution Of The Nacimiento Block Late Mesozoic Forearc Basin, Central California Coast, Scott Johnston, Andrew R.C. Kylander-Clark, Alan D. Chapman Dec 2018

Detrital Zircon Geochronology And Evolution Of The Nacimiento Block Late Mesozoic Forearc Basin, Central California Coast, Scott Johnston, Andrew R.C. Kylander-Clark, Alan D. Chapman

Physics

Forearc basins are first-order products of convergent-margin tectonics, and their sedimentary deposits offer unique perspectives on coeval evolution of adjacent arcs and subduction complexes. New detrital zircon U-Pb geochronologic data from 23 sandstones and 11 individual conglomerate clasts sampled from forearc basin strata of the Nacimiento block, an enigmatic stretch of the Cordilleran forearc exposed along the central California coast, place constraints on models for forearc deformation during evolution of the archetypical Cordilleran Mesozoic margin. Deposition and provenance of the Nacimiento forearc developed in three stages: (1) Late Jurassic– Valanginian deposition of lower Nacimiento forearc strata with zircon derived from …

Geologic Map And Structural Development Of The Noerthernmost Sur-Nacimiento Fault Zone, Central California Coast, Scott M. Johnston, John S. Singleton, Alan D. Chapman, Gabriella Murray Dec 2018

Geologic Map And Structural Development Of The Noerthernmost Sur-Nacimiento Fault Zone, Central California Coast, Scott M. Johnston, John S. Singleton, Alan D. Chapman, Gabriella Murray

Physics

The Sur-Nacimiento fault exposed along the central California coast (United States) juxtaposes the Salinian block arc against the Nacimiento block accretionary complex, cuts out the majority of the forearc basin and western arc, and requires a minimum of 150 km of orogen-normal crustal excision within the Mesozoic California convergent margin. Despite this significant strain, the kinematic evolution of the Sur-Nacimiento fault remains poorly understood, with diverse hypotheses suggesting sinistral, dextral, thrust, or normal displacement along the fault. This Late Cretaceous–Paleogene strain history is complicated by the location of the fault within a belt of subparallel faults that have accommodated significant …

A Decade Of Change: A Case Study Of Regulatory Compliance Costs In The Produce Industry, Lynn Hamilton, Michael Mccullough

Agribusiness

Regulatory pressure is a source of increasing concern to the California agricultural industry. In the decade since 2006, new rules at both the state and federal levels have imposed significantly higher regulatory burdens on growers, specifically with respect to food safety, water quality, labor wages, air quality; and worker health and safety. Additional regulations are in process as the Sustainable Groundwater Management Act is developed at the local levels for implementation in 2022, and minimum wage and overtime laws for farmworkers are phased in, also by 2022.

Previous studies regarding the regulatory environment in California have quantified the total cost …

Portable Thermoelectric Refrigerator, Cassandra Danielle Beck, Ryan Theodore Gelinas, Joshua Michael Dimaggio, Zachary David Wilson

Mechanical Engineering

This project created a versatile thermoelectric refrigerator that can be used via a wall outlet. The product is durable and effective. The refrigerator is functional in any ambient temperature, and uses thermoelectric cooling, and work from a standard 120V power outlet. By understanding existing products’ limitations and strengths, this project produced a product that outperforms what’s currently on the market. Many of the existing products’ operating temperature is dependent on the ambient temperature of the surroundings, which is a large drawback. Additionally, most of them take a long time to reach their lowest temperature, around 3 hours. One team member, …

Improving Ductility Of Slender Reinforced Concrete Shear Walls With Frp Sheets And Splay Anchors, Luke M. Ostrom Dec 2018

Improving Ductility Of Slender Reinforced Concrete Shear Walls With Frp Sheets And Splay Anchors, Luke M. Ostrom

Architectural Engineering

The Sylmar earthquake of 1971 caused significant damage to slender, non-ductile reinforced concrete (RC) shear wall buildings in California. A later survey by the Concrete Coalition in 2011, under the guidance of EERI members, indicated that there are over 3000 vulnerable concrete buildings in California [8]. This led to City of Los Angeles (LA) Ordinance 193893 enacted in 2015, which requires mandatory upgrades to these concrete buildings by 2035. Current practice to meet the requirements of this ordinance, with respect to RC wall buildings, involves adding new shear walls to the building plan or increasing the cross-sectional area of existing …

Clt Shearwall Dovetail Connection, Alexander Eduardo Esser, August Messano Dec 2018

Clt Shearwall Dovetail Connection, Alexander Eduardo Esser, August Messano

Architectural Engineering

As cross-laminated timber has become an increasingly popular construction material, its use as a shear wall element has also demanded attention. Primary obstructions to the use of CLT shear walls have been the lack of an economic connection type that does not compromise the structural integrity and has the robustness that CLT shear wall panels deserve. Dovetail connections provide a great option for the connection of CLT shear walls. With more experimentation, the optimal dovetail geometry can be further developed. The small-scale testing done in conjunction with this report proved that very deep pins and tails will result in bearing …

Mathematics

In this paper we prove a conjecture of Alexander and Currier that states, except for covering maps of equidistant surfaces in hyperbolic 3-space, a complete, nonnegatively curved immersed hypersurface in hyperbolic space is necessarily properly embedded.

Implementing Coordination Lab And Lesson Into Cm 413 - Job Site, Connor R. Westover Dec 2018

Implementing Coordination Lab And Lesson Into Cm 413 - Job Site, Connor R. Westover

Construction Management

Coordination can make or break a job. The act of coordination and the millions of pieces that go into a single project can directly affect both the schedule and budget of a construction project. Coordination is not a single part of the job, it is an on-going process that continuously involves all entities of the project. The importance of coordination and what it entails is not yet captured in the Cal Poly Construction Management curriculum. The purpose of this project would be to capture that importance and continue to build upon it to better prepare Cal Poly Builders for the …

Invariant Subspaces Of Compact Operators And Related Topics, Weston Mckay Grewe Dec 2018

Invariant Subspaces Of Compact Operators And Related Topics, Weston Mckay Grewe

Mathematics

The invariant subspace problem asks if every bounded linear operator on a Banach space has a nontrivial closed invariant subspace. Per Enflo has shown this is false in general, however it is known that every compact operator has an invariant subspace. The purpose of this project is to explore introductory results in functional analysis. Specifically we are interested in understanding compact operators and the proof that all compact operators on a Hilbert space have an invariant subspace. In the process of doing this we build up many examples and theorems relating to operators on a Hilbert or Banach space. Continuing …
