The Role Of An Extracellular Algal Polysaccharide In The Susceptibility To Copper Poisoning, James I. Mangi Jan 1976

The Role Of An Extracellular Algal Polysaccharide In The Susceptibility To Copper Poisoning, James I. Mangi

Graduate Dissertations and Theses

Algae of many diverse taxonomic units produce water soluble non-crystalline extracellular heteropolysaccharides. These polymers, or mixtures of polymers, usually have a gelatinous consistency and they may be termed “mucilage,” or “pectic,” “sheath,” “capsule” or “gelatinous” material. It may also be termed “algal slime.” It is the purpose of this work to investigate one possible function of at least one variety of algal slime.

The hypothesis to be investigated is that the slime produced by an algal cell affects the susceptibility of that alga to poisons, particularly metal ions. The rationale for this comes from:

A. The observation that algal slimes …

Developmental Morphology Of Calothrix Parietina (Nägeli) Thuret [= Gloeotrichia Echinulata (J.E. Smith) Richter], Kutbul Rahman Khan

Graduate Dissertations and Theses

Drouet (1973) on a morphological basis and the present author in his laboratory and field studies on the life gyre (cycle) and developmental morphology have shown that Gloeotrichia echinulata (J.E. Smith) Richter and Calothrix parietina (Nägeli) Thuret are the same species. According to International Code of Botanical Nomenclature (1972), C. parietina takes taxonomic priority.

In this alga, the akinetes (spores) are not the major means of over-wintering. Short hormogones and filaments of the form known as C. parietina are actually the common winter forms.

There is a direct relationship between different temperatures (10, 15, 21° C) and the frequency of …
