Ground Vegetation Patterns Of The Spruce-Fir Area Of The Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Dorothy Louise Crandall Dec 1957

Ground Vegetation Patterns Of The Spruce-Fir Area Of The Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Dorothy Louise Crandall

Doctoral Dissertations

Introduction: Although the spruce-fir area of the Southern Appalachians has interested several investigators, there have been few studies of the herbaceous plants in relation to the canopy and none with this relationship as the primary objective. Ecological surveys have been made by Cain (1931, 1935), Oosting and Billings (1951), and Whittaker (1956), but their papers do not report details in reference to site types and include rather limited material on the ground cover. Possible site types were mentioned by Whittaker but were not described and few supporting data of an objective nature were included.

Cain in his 1935 paper on …

The Summer Season Climatic And Vegetational Gradient Between Point Barrow And Meade River, Alaska, Edward Ernst Cooper Clebsch Dec 1957

The Summer Season Climatic And Vegetational Gradient Between Point Barrow And Meade River, Alaska, Edward Ernst Cooper Clebsch

Masters Theses

The purpose of the present investigation was to examine the summer season climatic gradient between Point Barrow and Meade River, Alaska, and to determine to what degree the gradient is reflected in the vegetation of the area. The area under consideration includes the northernmost portion of the Arctic Coastal Plain of Alaska and extends from 70° 25' to 71° 25' north latitude and from 156° 30' to 157° 30' west longitude. All points in the area lie within thirty miles of the Arctic Ocean, and Point Barrow itself extends some four miles out into the ocean as a narrow gravel …

Effect Of Time Of Cutting On Yield And Botanical Composition Of Prairie Hay In Southeastern Nebraska, Elverne C. Conard, Vincent H. Arthaud Nov 1957

Effect Of Time Of Cutting On Yield And Botanical Composition Of Prairie Hay In Southeastern Nebraska, Elverne C. Conard, Vincent H. Arthaud

Historical Research Bulletins of the Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station

Approximately three and one-third million acres of native prairie are harvested annually in Nebraska for hay. In the four-year period 1948-1951, the State ranked first in wild hay production with an average yield of more than two and one-quarter million tons per year. This crop is an important natural resource in Nebraska's livestock industry. Studies were initiated in 1945 to determine the effects of time of cutting on the yield and feeding value of prairie hay in southeastern Nebraska. The studies were continued through the summer of 1952 to determine the effects of different cutting treatments on the vigor and …

A Preliminary Investigation Of The Role Of Selenium In The Growth Of Stanleya Pinnata, Richard F. Nelson Aug 1957

A Preliminary Investigation Of The Role Of Selenium In The Growth Of Stanleya Pinnata, Richard F. Nelson

Theses and Dissertations

Stanleya pinnata has been identified as an indicator plant for seleniferous soils. The apparent limitation of its distribution to seleniferous soils suggests that selenium may play an essential role in this species. This study is a preliminary investigation of the role of selenium to Stanleya pinnata. When fully ripe, seeds germinated readily. Concentrations of selenium of 100 parts per million and 1000 parts per million retarded germination. Seeds germiuated in lower concentrations were not affected which was probably due to the selenium content of the seed itself, being greater than in the germinating media. Stanleya pinnata plants were grown from …

Plant Microfossils From The Bruhn Lignite, Robert E. Mclaughlin Jun 1957

Plant Microfossils From The Bruhn Lignite, Robert E. Mclaughlin

Doctoral Dissertations

Introduction: The collection and preliminary examination of fossiliferous material from West Tennessee, begun in the fall of 1952 with the aid and encouragement of Dr. A. J. Sharp, convinced the writer that the opportunity to extend present knowledge of early vegetational history in the area was substantial. Despite the fact that the region west of the Tennessee River has yielded a considerable amount of plant fossil evidence, mainly in the form of leaf impressions, many unsolved problems remain.

From the botanical point of view, the identification of fossil plants based on the single criterion of leaf morphology, as has been …

The Alkali Tolerance Of Tall Wheatgrass, David L. Carter May 1957

The Alkali Tolerance Of Tall Wheatgrass, David L. Carter

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Alkali land occurs adjacent to nearly every extensively irrigated area. Much of this land is too alkaline to produce profitable crops. Each year thousands of acres or land are going out of production because or increasing alkalinity. This presents one or the most acute problem which confronts irrigation agriculture today.

An Evaluation Of Selfing Techniques For Agropyron Elongatum, Keith I. Matheson May 1957

An Evaluation Of Selfing Techniques For Agropyron Elongatum, Keith I. Matheson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Tall wheatgrass Agropyron elongatum (Host) Beauv. has gained in importance since its introduction into the United States in 1909 from its native habitat on saline meadows and seashores of Southern Europe and Asia Minor. This very late-maturing, coarse, nonlodging 2 1/2 to 6-foot-tall bunchgrass was discarded in Utah in 1919 for being too aggressive. It is now under production in the intermountain and other regions because of its cold and drought tolerance as well as for its salt tolerance and its ability to make excellent fall and spring recovery. According to Weintraub (1953) this salt-tolerant plant gives high yields of …

The Relative Saponin Content Of Alfalfa Varieties In Utah As Measured By Chick Growth Depression, Morris Dean Wilding

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Bloat among ruminants is not new to farmers or scientists. One learns from a Roman author's description of this ailment written in 60 A. D. that the symptoms have changed little since that time. Literature also records that the treatments used today for the prevention and relief of bloat are similar to those prescribed by the early Romans (Anonymous 1954).

A Study Of The Root Rot-Nematode Complex And The Comparative Yield Of 17 Varieties Of Alfalfa In Washington County, Utah, J. Clair Theurer

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Alfalfa is the major forage crop in the state of Utah. It is especially important in Washington County where mild temperatures allow the production of 4 to 5 cuttings each year, and where the dairy industry is increasing.
