Procedures For A Long Term Retention Data For The Analysis And Design Of A Rudder For A Marine Vessel: Step Documentation, Franklin A. Montejo

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

The process of mechanical design involves many steps, starting from a customer need. Then the engineer estimates the possible solutions until an optimal product is achieved. Through these design steps, information is created and exchanged among different design activities. Currently the industry lacks a means to preserve this information flow for future use.;In the end, much of the information generated in the design process may not be available due to obsolete software used to create the design; one missing part of the process; a missing link between the design tasks; unknown context of the design, and some other possibilities.;The present …

Is Benefit For Individuals: Expanded Conceptualization And Comprehensive Construct Development, Jonghak Sun

Information Systems & Operations Management Dissertations

Information systems benefits for individuals (ISBI) has been a key construct for the IS success model, which has evolved over the years to strengthen the theoretical foundation for the IS field. However, relatively little research has been done to explore, develop and validate the underlying theoretical dimensions for this crucial construct. Moreover, extant research related to this construct in particular, and to the IS success model in general, has been conducted in the context of individual IS application instead of the overall IS in the organization. This study fulfills four research objectives: (1) Develop a theory-based extended conceptualization of IS …

Real Time Kinematic Global Navigation Satellite Systems In Railroad Transportation, Peter Joseph Dailey Aug 2010

Real Time Kinematic Global Navigation Satellite Systems In Railroad Transportation, Peter Joseph Dailey

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

Transportation of freight by rail is an exceptionally fuel-efficient mode. Rail's exceptional efficiency comes with a high cost for inspection and maintenance of the railway to insure train safety at design speed. The Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) imposes operational safety by requiring compliance with regulations that rely on timely track inspection.;Further, new standards for train movement authority, known collectively as positive train control, require knowledge of a train's exact location on the railway. This knowledge has traditionally relied on wired track circuits due to the need to distinguish a train's location on two or more parallel tracks.;The research examines a …

Reovirus As A Probe To Study Induction Of Anti-Viral Immunity And Modulation Of Peanut Allergy, Ronald J. Fecek Jr.

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

Infectious diarrheal diseases are a major burden to human health worldwide. A proportion of those diarrheal diseases are caused by enteric viruses that gain access through the gastrointestinal tract. Consequently, the human gastrointestinal mucosa represents an important route of entry for enteric viruses. Enteric viruses are taken up by gastrointestinal mucosal dendritic cells (DCs) that induce and shape adaptive immunity, however, activation of mucosal DCs by enteric viruses is poorly understood. The research presented in this dissertation is focused on deciphering the requirements for activation of murine DCs in response to an enteric virus as well as the subsequent generation …

A Comparison Of Perceptions Among Amateur And Pga Professional Golfer To The Five Design Principles Of Golf Course Architecture, Ryan Woodard Johnson Jul 2010

A Comparison Of Perceptions Among Amateur And Pga Professional Golfer To The Five Design Principles Of Golf Course Architecture, Ryan Woodard Johnson

Landscape Architecture Masters & Design Theses

Golf was originally a game played primarily on landscapes that were not manipulated by humans. As the game has matured, humans have exerted increasing influence on the design of golf courses. As in art, golf course architecture has developed its own set of principles and its own set of elements. The elements are the tools the artist uses to create the painting, while the principles guide how he/she implements these elements (Lovett 1999). In the case of golf course architects, the land is the canvas while the greens, tees, fairways, roughs, hazards, and contours are examples of the elements used …

Stakeholders' Perceptions Of Pedestrian Accessibility To Green Infrastructure: Fort Worth's Urban Villages, Petrine M. Abrahams

Landscape Architecture Masters & Design Theses

Green infrastructure refers to a strategically managed network of natural and open spaces that provides ecological benefits for human and wildlife populations in urbanized areas (Benedict and McMahon, 2006; Sandstrom, 2002; Weber, Sloan, and Wolf, 2005). Recent studies demonstrate a relationship between green infrastructure, and human and ecological health in urbanized areas (Tzoulas et al. 2007; Wilson, 1986; Louv, 2008). By strategically increasing density and a mix of uses in existing, sparsely populated urban areas, the "urban village" model developed by the City of Fort Worth presents the opportunity to incorporate accessible green infrastructure in an urban environment in order …

Assessing Stormwater Runoff With "Swat" In Mixed-Use Developments: Learning From Southlake Town Square And Addison Circle In North Texas, Brian S. Parker

Landscape Architecture Masters & Design Theses

Recognizing environmental problems associated with sprawl, North Texas communities are looking at options for future growth. Higher density mixed-used developments (MXDs) are being considered as an alternative to the continuation of current trends and adopted plans, yet little is known how they impact the region environmentally (Vision North Texas, 2008). More specifically, it is not clear how these developments perform in regard to stormwater runoff and water pollution. This research evaluates the stormwater runoff and water pollution of two mixed-use developments (MXDs) in order to understand their environmental role in the future of North Texas. The research question in this …

Suburban Landmarks In North Arlington: Perceptions Of Experts And Non-Experts, Su-Yu Cheng Mar 2010

Suburban Landmarks In North Arlington: Perceptions Of Experts And Non-Experts, Su-Yu Cheng

Landscape Architecture Masters & Design Theses

Each individual perceives the world differently and attains knowledge in distinct ways (Rapoport 1977). With regard to perception about specific places, some individuals function as "insiders." This means their perceptions are engaged with place through daily experiences familiarizing them with the landscape. Others function as "outsiders," ¬¬unconcerned with or unaware of landscape events, thereby perceiving only the surfaces meaning of such events (Dearden 1984, Craik 1970, Bourassa 1991). One example of this dichotomy between insiders and outsiders can be found among design experts and non-experts. Design experts, such as landscape architects, architects, and planners, are directly involved with landscape aesthetics …

Providing quality urban spaces including plazas and pedestrian malls encourages use of the Central Business District (CBD) and stimulates a vibrant atmosphere for casual strolling, window shopping, and browsing (Rubenstein, 1992). Dallas, Texas, which in many people's minds defines the term `automobile city', has developed and implemented a visionary plan since the early 1990s' for using light rail as a tool for economic growth and community development. Thus, Dallas Area Rapid Transit's (DART's) starter system of light rail opened in June 1996, and a city that grew up with the automobile embraced transit as an integral part of its future …

North Texas Stakeholders: Perceptions Of Extensive Green Roofs, Matthew Heath House Mar 2010

North Texas Stakeholders: Perceptions Of Extensive Green Roofs, Matthew Heath House

Landscape Architecture Masters & Design Theses

Green roofs are not a new technology. The first recorded green roof was the Hanging Gardens of Babylon built by King Nebuchadnezzar for his wife Amyitis who missed her lush homeland (Osmundson 1999). However, since the late 1990s, the term green roof has taken on ecological and social significance beyond its seemingly simplistic description. The term has become an epithet for the reduction of pollution and urban heat islands, for large scale mitigation of storm water run-off, and for maximum utilization of urban land (Cantor 2008). This research examines perceptions about extensive green roofs held by developers, city officials, architects, …

Understanding Social Networks In Frazier Courts Hope Vi Development, Christopher Buentello

Public Affairs Theses

The HOPE VI program enacted in 1992 represented a shift in public housing by addressing resident's needs through physical design improvements, self-sufficiency programs, and the deconcentration of poverty. Funding through HOPE VI allowed local housing authorities to demolish deteriorated public housing units and replace them with new income-inclusive housing units. The "hope" would be that low income residents would interact with middle income residents to access resources that are normally beyond the reach of low income individuals. This assumes of course that residents will interact amongst each other. Therefore, I conducted a survey of residents at Dallas' Frazier Courts to …

The Walkable Neighborhood Based On Retail Requirements: Impact Of Population Density On Market Area, Kendal V. Pope

Planning Theses

Recent planning thought has focused on how to configure the city to reduce dependence on private automobiles. One important strain of this thinking is how to promote a city where daily needs can be satisfied on foot. Using the tools of Central Place Theory and Demand Threshold analysis, this work studies the required population density to bring grocery shopping within pedestrian range of the population. The analysis is based on the grocery market in Dallas County, Texas. As long as economies of scale and consumer price sensitivity continue to operate as they have, the alternatives will remain much higher density …
