Proposition 48 And Proposition 42 In The Ncaa: A Social Constructionist Case Study, Kevin R. Cole Dec 1995

Proposition 48 And Proposition 42 In The Ncaa: A Social Constructionist Case Study, Kevin R. Cole

Masters Theses

The controversy surrounding the creation and implementation of two National Collegiate Athletic Association student-athlete eligibility rules, Proposition 48 and Proposition 42, was the focus of this study. The two rules required that a student's scholastic grade point average and SAT scores be factored into scholarship and athletic admissions decisions. By describing the unfolding social process respecting the creation of these two eligibility rules, this study addressed issues vital to rule creating processes in general.

The social constructionist perspective was utilized as a theoretical guide for this study, allowing for the examination of claims makers and their social claims regarding the …

Loneliness: Do Living Arrangements Make A Difference?, Judith N. Moore Dec 1995

Loneliness: Do Living Arrangements Make A Difference?, Judith N. Moore

Masters Theses

This study is an exploratory secondary analysis of loneliness experienced as a serious problem by the elderly. The secondary data were from the Davis (1986) national study conducted by Harris & Associates (1987) for the Commonwealth Fund Commission on Elderly People Living Alone. The independent demographic variables of living arrangements (living alone or living with others), age (65 to 85 and over), marital status (married, widowed, divorced, separated, and never married) and sex by the dependent variable of loneliness (a serious problem or not a serious problem) were measured by chi-squares and Cramer's V test for statistical significance. Results indicated …

Presenting Qualitative Data, Ronald J. Chenail

The Qualitative Report

After all the data have been collected and the analysis has been completed, the next major task for qualitative researchers is to re-present the study in the form of a paper or a lecture. The challenge of converting mounds of data and analysis can be quite overwhelming even for the experienced researcher. To help you with your efforts at presenting qualitative research in your papers and in your talks, I ask you to consider the following ideas: Openness, Data as Star, Juxtaposition, and Data Presentation Strategies.

A Glipse Of A New Experiential Learning Theory Paradigm, John S. Duley Nov 1995

A Glipse Of A New Experiential Learning Theory Paradigm, John S. Duley

Service Learning, General

A pseudo NSIEE Occasional Paper printed as memorabilia for the Wingspread Service Learning History Project Conference, December 2-4, 1995. This was first presented as the closing Keynote address at the 1980 NSIEE conference in San Francisco. It was reworked on the basis of correspondence with Bob Sigmon and conversations with other illuminaries. I reworked it in its present form in June 1988 and submitted it to the then editor of Occasional Papers. For probably several good reasons of which I am not aware, it was not published. So on this occasion I have taken the liberty as a former editor …

The Wider Circle Of Friends In Adolescence, Peggy C. Giordano Nov 1995

The Wider Circle Of Friends In Adolescence, Peggy C. Giordano

Sociology Faculty Publications

Adolescents interact with a variety of peers, in addition to the close friends generally emphasized in the literature. In this article I contrast the style and content of the communications directed to close friends and other youths characterized by varying degrees of ''nearness and remoteness.'' The handwritten messages found in high school yearbooks are analyzed and used to illustrate some of the distinct features of each type of discourse. This analysis suggests that while intimate relations undoubtedly play a key role in development, adolescents also learn a great deal about themselves and the social world they must navigate through their …

Review Of Child Care In Russia: In Transition By Jean Ispa, Carolyn P. Edwards Nov 1995

Review Of Child Care In Russia: In Transition By Jean Ispa, Carolyn P. Edwards

Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications

Jean Ispa first observed and studied Soviet child care centers in 1993–94 as part of her doctoral research on toddler social behavior. In 1991, just before the demise of the Soviet Union, she returned to Russia for an intensive 3 months of research on current practices. Growing up in a household of Russian immigrants, she is fluent in the Russian language. Her knowledge of Russian language and culture, coupled with the long time horizon of her experience with American and Russian systems of education, render this new book a particularly enlightening, thoughtful, and balanced description of a system of child …

Explanatory Practice In Family Studies, Jetse Sprey Nov 1995

Explanatory Practice In Family Studies, Jetse Sprey

Sociology & Criminology Faculty Publications

The article makes a case for a more flexible and realistic explanatory practice in the family field. The conventional linkage between the worth of an explanatory statement and its predictive power, for, example, reflects cultural assumptions as much as it does rational thought. In one's culture, knowledge implies power so that prediction allows for control of the present and the foreseeable future. The sense making of, any specific descriptive piece of work depends on its focus. For example, how well does it allow noise to be separated from relevant information? How, far do its data reach into the future? To …

Institutionalized Discrimination: Three Cases In The United States Military, Sarah H. Frost Oct 1995

Institutionalized Discrimination: Three Cases In The United States Military, Sarah H. Frost

Dissertations and Theses

This thesis explores institutionalized discrimination in the United States Military by examining the rationales given for policies that exclude, or limit the military service of racial minorities, women and homosexuals, and the rationales given for altering such policies. outgroups such as racial minorities, women and homosexuals are presumed to be a threat to the white male heterosexual majority within the military services. The presence of these outgroups in the military has been officially characterized as threatening to small-unit cohesion, and therefore threatening to military readiness. This thesis was first based upon the assumption that the rationales favoring discriminatory policies, and …

Democratic Participation In A Community Of Learners: Loris Malaguzzi's Philosophy Of Education As Relationship , Carolyn P. Edwards Oct 1995

Democratic Participation In A Community Of Learners: Loris Malaguzzi's Philosophy Of Education As Relationship , Carolyn P. Edwards

Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications

We consider relationships to be the fundamental, organizing strategy of our educational system. -- Loris Malaguzzi, 1993, p. 10.

The metaphor of education as relationship provided Loris Malaguzzi with the fundamental premise for his philosophy and pedagogy. The child--seen as powerful, rich in resources, competent, and social--seeks from the beginning of life to find out about the self, others, and the world through interaction: knowledge is co-constructed. Education, hence, must focus not on the child considered in isolation from others, but instead on the child seen as interconnected with particular others in nested communities: home, classroom, school, neighborhood, city, region, …
