Value Of Education As Perceived By Mexican Immigrants And Caucasian American Citizens Employed In Agriculture In Louisiana, Richard Johnson, Joe Kotrlik
Journal of International Agricultural and Extension Education
Agriculture operations benefit from the employment of Mexican immigrants through government programs that supply workers to the industry. Therefore, many crawfish farm operations in Louisiana employ both U.S. citizen and Mexican immigrant labor to operate efficiently. The purpose of this study was to compare selected characteristics of farm workers as well as to explore values related to education, as sorted by citizenship and ethnicity. The results of this study indicated significant differences in Mexican immigrant and Caucasian U.S. citizen crawfish farmers’ educational backgrounds and demographic characteristics, while finding that both groups held similar values about education. In general, the Mexican …

Agricultural Extension And Market-Led Agrarian Reform: Findings From An Exploratory Case Study In Limpopo Province, South Africa, Daniel Tobin, Thomas Bruening, Mark Brennan, Brad Olson
Agricultural Extension And Market-Led Agrarian Reform: Findings From An Exploratory Case Study In Limpopo Province, South Africa, Daniel Tobin, Thomas Bruening, Mark Brennan, Brad Olson
Journal of International Agricultural and Extension Education
n 1994, as South Africa was transitioning out of the apartheid era, the new, democratically elected government was forced to confront a largely polarized agricultural sector. Colonial rule and apartheid policies had systematically dispossessed the African majority from land. At the end of apartheid, the white minority, comprising less than 10% of the population, controlled 87% of total agricultural land. To confront the harsh realities of food insecurity and poverty, South Africa’s post-apartheid democracy implemented land and agrarian reform policies. The purpose of this study was to understand the experiences and perceptions regarding these policies of emerging black farmers and …

A Biotechnology Course For Developing Countries, Karim M. Maredia, Joseph F. Guenthner, Cholani K. Weebadde
Journal of International Agricultural and Extension Education
Biotechnology offers benefits, but few developing countries have approved genetically engineered (GE) crops. Extension educational programs could help prepare stakeholders in developing countries to influence biotechnology policies. Michigan State University (MSU) developed a two-week course that was taught 14 times from 2002 to 2010 for 251 participants from 58 developing countries. This course helped form an international network of biotechnology specialists who collaborate with stakeholders.

Disordered Money Behaviors: Development Of The Klontz Money Behavior Inventory, Bradley Klontz, Sonya L. Britt, Kristy L. Archuleta, Ted Klontz
Journal of Financial Therapy
Much of the existing literature on financial behavior focuses on basic money management tasks (e.g., balancing a checkbook). However, it can be equally important to identify problematic financial behaviors that can sabotage one’s financial health. The purpose of this study was to create an assessment tool that can be used by mental health and financial professionals to identify disordered money behaviors that may impede on progress towards one’s financial goals. This study asked 422 respondents to indicate their agreement with disordered money behaviors, including compulsive buying, pathological gambling, compulsive hoarding, workaholism, financial enabling, financial dependence, financial denial, and financial enmeshment, …

Tactical Asset Management Or Financial Trauma?: Why The Abandonment Of Buy-And-Hold May Be A Symptom Of Posttraumatic Stress, Bradley Klontz, Sonya L. Britt
Journal of Financial Therapy
The purpose of this study was to measure the psychological impact of the 2008 financial crisis on financial planners. Recent surveys of financial advisors have confirmed a fundamental shift away from strategic management in favor of tactical management, with planners reporting having had made on average 2.15 adjustments in the past 12 months to take advantage of market changes (FPA 2012 Trends in Investing Study, 2012), and 83% of financial planners planning to make at least one tactical adjustment within the next three months (Veres, 2012). This article explores the psychological impact of the 2008 financial crisis on financial planners, …
Tradition And Humour: The Academic Dress Of The University Of Glasgow, Neil K. Dickson
Tradition And Humour: The Academic Dress Of The University Of Glasgow, Neil K. Dickson
Transactions of the Burgon Society
The University of Glasgow was founded in 1451. It is the second oldest university in Scotland and the fourth oldest in the UK (after Oxford, Cambridge and St Andrews). By the end of the sixteenth century Scotland had five universities, compared with England’s two. This situation continued for more than two hundred years: it was only in the nineteenth century that England finally caught up with Scotland. So perhaps one might expect that Scotland would have a long, continuous and colourful history of academic dress. However, as we shall see, that is not the case. The reason can be expressed …

Determinants Of Adoption Of Improved Maize Varieties And Chemical Fertilizers In Mozambique, Eunice Cavane, Cynthia Donavan
Journal of International Agricultural and Extension Education
In Mozambique, adoption of improved maize seed and chemical fertilizers is still limited. This study assessed farmers’ attitudes towards hybrid maize SC513, Nitrogenous (N) Phosphorous (P) Potassium (K), (NPK 12-24-12) and urea fertilizers in highlands and lowlands of the Manica District. The study determined the influence of farmers’ characteristics, attitudes, sources of information, and agro-ecological conditions on adoption of these technologies during 1995 through 2005. A questionnaire was administered during April and May 2006 with a randomly selected sample of 293 households. In general, farmers held positive attitudes towards improved maize varieties and chemical fertilizers, but the strength of attitudes …

Money Beliefs And Financial Behaviors: Development Of The Klontz Money Script Inventory, Bradley Klontz, Sonya L. Britt, Jennifer Mentzer, Ted Klontz
Journal of Financial Therapy
Financial matters have been identified in the literature as a significant source of stress for individuals and families. However, little is known about the psychological issues related to money that may be contributing to individual and family problems. Using a sample of 422 individuals who identified their level of agreement on 72 money-related beliefs, this study identified four distinct money belief patterns. Three of these belief systems were significantly correlated with income and net worth. Demographic features associated with the four money belief scales are provided. The results of this study may be useful for practitioners interested in quickly and …

The Effectiveness Of An Interactive Multimedia Psychoeducational Approach To Improve Financial Competence In At-Risk Youth: A Pilot Study, Bradley Klontz, Caesar Pacifici, Lee White, Carol Nelson
Journal of Financial Therapy
In recent years, a growing number of initiatives have been aimed at increasing financial literacy among youth in America. However, these efforts have tended to target mainstream populations, and failing to adequately address the backgrounds, learning, and psychological needs of at-risk youth. This study piloted a curriculum on money management that presented a basic set of financial skills via story situations and characters that are meaningful to at-risk youth using a dynamic interactive multimedia online delivery to heighten youths’ interest to learn. The approach also helped at-risk youth gain insight into their money beliefs and psychological barriers to success, integrating …

A Dress Without A Home: The Unadopted Academic Dress Of The Royal Institute Of British Architects, 1923–24, Philip Goff
Transactions of the Burgon Society
Following the death of Bill Keen, the Managing Director of Ede & Ravenscroft, in 1996, one of [Goff's] tasks, as Academic Consultant, was to sift through hundreds of files and letters at the Chancery Lane premises. On one occasion, a yellowing, quarto-size page fell out of a book. It was headed Supplement to the Journal of the Royal Institute of British Architects, and the bold title of the piece caught his eye: ‘Proposals for the Adoption of an Academic Dress for Members and Licentiates of the Royal Institute of British Architects’. This was followed by some illustrations of the costume …
