Transpersonal Effects Of Exposure To Shamanic Use Of Khoomei (Tuvan Throat Singing): Preliminary Evaluations From Training Seminars, Vladislav Matrenitsky, Harris L. Friedman Jul 2012

Transpersonal Effects Of Exposure To Shamanic Use Of Khoomei (Tuvan Throat Singing): Preliminary Evaluations From Training Seminars, Vladislav Matrenitsky, Harris L. Friedman

International Journal of Transpersonal Studies

Khoomei is a Tuvan Siberian shamanic practice involving overtone throat singing. One hundred eighty-one Western participants completed questionnaires after attending Khoomei seminars, asking about the following: motivation of people to learn shamanic throat singing; self-perception at the levels of body, energy, and mind before-and-after the seminar; feelings and sensations from practicing throat singing; transpersonal experience during throat singing; experience of inner vibrations from listening to the singing; and general state and feelings after seminar. In general, most participants reported many benefits from attending the seminars, although a few reported mild negative effects (e.g., dizziness and sadness). Of particular interest are …

Shamanism In Cross-Cultural Perspective, Michael Winkelman Jul 2012

Shamanism In Cross-Cultural Perspective, Michael Winkelman

International Journal of Transpersonal Studies

This article reviews the origins of the concept of the shaman and the principal sources of

controversy regarding the existence and nature of shamanism. Confusion regarding the

nature of shamanism is clarified with a review of research providing empirical support for a

cross-cultural concept of shamans that distinguishes them from related shamanistic healers.

The common shamanistic universals involving altered states of consciousness are examined

from psychobiological perspectives to illustrate shamanism’s relationships to human nature.

Common biological aspects of altered states of consciousness help explain the origins of

shamanism while social influences on this aspect of human nature help to explain …

Postmodern Trickster Strands In Shamanic Worlds, Jürgen W. Kremer Jul 2012

Postmodern Trickster Strands In Shamanic Worlds, Jürgen W. Kremer

International Journal of Transpersonal Studies

This essay explores socio-philosophical meanings of shamanic cultures and practices and

their affirmation and revival. What is their potential significance for humanity’s future? I

argue that shamanism engages humans in practices that put us potentially at the center of

our creativity and creative visioning. The trickster figure, a pervasive indigenous presence,

so often seems pivotal in this process and this pervasively male figure plays an important

part in this regenerative interpretation of postmodernism; in fact, postmodernism can be

understood as trickster. Just like the trickster, the nature of postmodernism is ambiguous.

I explore this ambiguity and suggest that shamanic practices …

Spirituality And Hallucinogen Use: Results From A Pilot Study Among College Students, Adam Stasko, Satya P. Rao, Amy Pilley

International Journal of Transpersonal Studies

Anthropologists have studied the use of hallucinogens as a spiritual tool by indigenous

populations since the turn of the 20th century. However, literature is sparse in describing

use by non-indigenous populations. Using a study population of students from a university

in the Southwest United States, the current study investigated the spiritual development and

meaning that college students place on their use of hallucinogenic substances. The spiritual

framework developed by Love and Talbot (1999) and a transpersonal anthropological

approach were used to guide the study. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with

each participant. Results indicated that participants used hallucinogens for both spiritual …

Experiences Of “Soul Journeys” In The World’S Religions: The Journeys Of Mohammed, Saints Paul And John, Jewish Chariot Mysticism, Taoism’S Highest Clarity School, And Shamanism., Roger Walsh

International Journal of Transpersonal Studies

“Soul journeys” are a central practice of shamanism. However, they have also been important

in many other religious traditions and have exerted a major impact on religions, cultures, and

history. This article surveys some important journeys in the world’s religions such as those of

Mohammed, the Christian saints Paul and John, Jewish Chariot Mysticism, Taoism’s Highest

Clarity tradition, and shamanism. The article explores the experiences of these journeys, techniques

for inducing them, culturally specific features, and the range of metaphysical interpretations of

them. It also examines some of the surprising ways in which journeys are currently impacting

Western culture, ranging …

Positive Effects Of Rewards And Performance Standards On Intrinsic Motivation, W. David Pierce, Judy Cameron, Katherine M. Banko, Sylvia So Jun 2012

Positive Effects Of Rewards And Performance Standards On Intrinsic Motivation, W. David Pierce, Judy Cameron, Katherine M. Banko, Sylvia So

The Psychological Record

The present study examined how rewards affect people's intrinsic motivation when the rewards are tied to meeting increasingly demanding performance standards. The experiment was a 2 x 2 factorial design with 2 levels of performance standard (constant, progressive) and 2 levels of reward (reward, no reward). Using a puzzle-solving task, 60 undergraduate university students were randomly assigned to the experimental conditions. In the constant conditions, participants were required to solve 3 puzzle problems on each of 3 trials; in the progressive conditions, participants were asked to solve 1, 3, and 5 problems over the trials. Half the participants were offered …

Irruptions Of The Sacred In A “World Of Shit”: Profanity, Sacred Words, And Cinematic Hierophanies In Stanley Kubrick’S Full Metal Jacket (1987), Joseph E. Bisson May 2012

Irruptions Of The Sacred In A “World Of Shit”: Profanity, Sacred Words, And Cinematic Hierophanies In Stanley Kubrick’S Full Metal Jacket (1987), Joseph E. Bisson

Journal of Religion & Film

Full Metal Jacket remains embedded in the consciousness of the popular culture mainly because of its abundance of profane language, violent imagery, and salacious set pieces. The juxtaposition of profane language and imagery with sacred language and religious symbolism reveals that Kubrick’s Vietnam film has powerful religious overtones that comprise an important element of the film’s critique of homo religiosus and the modern human condition. By continually juxtaposing the sacred and profane, Kubrick created “cinematic hierophanies” that advanced a cultural critique that inventively integrated ideas from some of the mid-20th Century’s greatest interpreters of myths -- Carl Jung, Joseph …

The Story Of Taste: Using Eegs And Self-Reports To Understand Consumer Choice, Charnetta Brown, Adriane B. Randolph, Janée N. Burkhalter

The Kennesaw Journal of Undergraduate Research

The authors investigate consumers’ willingness to switch from a preferred manufacturer brand to an unfamiliar private-label brand if taste is perceived as identical. Consumer decisions are examined through recordings of electrical brain activity in the form of electroencephalograms (EEGs) and self-reported data captured in surveys. Results reveal a willingness of consumers to switch to a less-expensive brand when the quality is perceived to be the same as the more expensive counterpart. Cost saving options for consumers and advertising considerations for managers are discussed.

Pet-Related Variables And Stress Levels Of Undergraduate Students, Katrin Haller May 2012

Pet-Related Variables And Stress Levels Of Undergraduate Students, Katrin Haller

Undergraduate Psychology Research Methods Journal

Pets have been and are an important part of humans’ lives. There are many reasons for owning pets, including various physical and psychological benefits. The present study aimed to find out which pet-related variables, if any, were associated with stress levels of undergraduate students, and whether there is a relationship between certain pet-related variables and undergraduate students’ stress levels. The study included 55 undergraduate students from Lindenwood University. Materials consisted of a self-made demographic survey, a self-made pet survey, and Cohen’s and Williamson’s Perceived Stress Scale (1988). A multiple regression and correlational analysis was conducted, entering the stress scale score …

Mood And Advertising: A Follow-Up Study To “The Power Of Emotion”, Lisa Wiese May 2012

Mood And Advertising: A Follow-Up Study To “The Power Of Emotion”, Lisa Wiese

Undergraduate Psychology Research Methods Journal

Advertisements affect our lives even when we least expect it. We hear ads on the radio, read ads in magazines, and are even exposed to advertisements through billboards as we drive down the road. The effects on mood and advertisements began to be popularly researched in the early 1980s. This study conducting on mood and advertising was a follow up study to “The Power of Emotion” conducted by Wiese (2012). It was important to conduct more research into this topic to find statistical significance in support of the hypothesis. The present study used a positive group, a negative group, and …

The Relationship Between Self-Esteem And School Performance, Trina M. Ward May 2012

The Relationship Between Self-Esteem And School Performance, Trina M. Ward

Undergraduate Psychology Research Methods Journal

Self-esteem is what some may define as self-confidence. School performance is what society may define as participation in the classroom or how much effort you put forth into learning. This research was designed to see if a correlation between school performance and self-esteem exists. Participants were recruited at Lindenwood University and chose to take the study for extra credit in a particular class. Thirty-three participants were assigned to complete a single survey, with questions asking for their views about themselves, their participation in school activities, and demographic questions which included age and sex. Results showed that there was a weak …

The Relationship Between Social Support And Self-Esteem, Ashley Karraker

Undergraduate Psychology Research Methods Journal

Social relationships are an important element of everyday life. They are related to well-being, and can bring happiness and fulfillment to our lives. Self-esteem is extremely important to our health, physical and psychological. It is so important that we go to great lengths to preserve it and build it up. There are many factors that go into the formation of self-esteem, and this paper looks at the relationship between self-esteem and social support. The research hypothesis was that there would be a positive relationship between social support and self-esteem. The hypothesis was supported, but the correlation was not strong. This …

How Helpful Are Academic Advisors For College Students?, Andréa Conver May 2012

How Helpful Are Academic Advisors For College Students?, Andréa Conver

Undergraduate Psychology Research Methods Journal

“Advising is an essential element of student success,” (Sayles & Shelton, 2005, p. 99). There seems to be a correlation between quality academic advising and student retention among schools that purposely pursue high quality in advising their students (Bahr, P. R., 2008; Fields & Barrett, 1996; Sayles & Shields, 2005). Though there are existing forms of academic advising within colleges and universities, the structures and goals for each strategy seem to differ. For example, local nursing schools were seeking to improve the quality of nursing education and retention through their advisory programs (Sayles & Shelton, 2005). In this article, the …

Synesthesia Metaphor In Semantic Processing And Visual Perception, Ai Shinohara May 2012

Synesthesia Metaphor In Semantic Processing And Visual Perception, Ai Shinohara

Undergraduate Psychology Research Methods Journal

Synesthesia is a rare neurological ability whereby people can interpret one stimulus by using multiple perceptions or cognitions. Synesthesia metaphor, on the other hand, is a synesthesiac feeling which most people have toward a target stimulus. The current study was conducted to determine if there is a synesthesia metaphor between vision and semantic processing. Chinese characters were used as visual stimuli for those unfamiliar with the symbols, and the English words that served as a prompt for the task were used as cognitive or semantic stimuli in this study. Fifty-eight students recruited from the Lindenwood participant Pool (LPP) were presented …

The Universality Of Emotional Facial Expressions Across Culture And Implications For Survival, Lindsay Trefney May 2012

The Universality Of Emotional Facial Expressions Across Culture And Implications For Survival, Lindsay Trefney

Undergraduate Psychology Research Methods Journal

Emotion is one of the greatest links for human interaction. Emotion allows people from culture to culture to relate to and communicate with one another when language barriers exist. Emotional facial expressions were once thought to be culture specific, much like the emotions attached to those expressions. Research exists suggesting facial expressions across culture must be universal based on Darwin’s theories of evolution and survival (Ekman & Friesen, 1971; Hansen & Hansen, 1988; Hock, 2009; Pinkham, Griffin, Baron, Sasson, & Gur, 2010; Rosenberg & Ekman, 1993), and without some universal agreement about emotional facial expressions and their attached emotions, humans …

The Effects Of A Relationship Status On Views Of The Opposite Sex, Taylor L. Cathey May 2012

The Effects Of A Relationship Status On Views Of The Opposite Sex, Taylor L. Cathey

Undergraduate Psychology Research Methods Journal

It is human nature to notice those around us, and size them up by our own set of standards. This includes taking a measure of physical appearance and attractiveness. However, there are several factors that affect our perceptions of the world around us, and especially the people whom we see. Emotional states and a variety of emotions, play a strong role in dictating our behaviors and reactions (Most, Laurenceau, Graber, Belcher, & Smith, 2010). One factor that changes our human lives is the presence of romance. Intimacy, passion, and commitment are components associated with romance and relationships that take a …
