This study examines the influence of ASD-specific training or professional development, peer observations, feedback from consultation/collaboration and teacher attitudes on general education teacher’s self-efficacy beliefs for educating students with ASD, as well as whether knowledge mediates the effect of professional development on teacher self-efficacy. It is hypothesized that the proposed theoretical model of teacher self-efficacy for educating students with ASD will fit an empirical model based on collected data. Data from 536 participants have been collected and are being analyzed. Preliminary results suggest that the hypothesized model does not fit the empirical model. Cognitive failures are a sometimes costly everyday experience—problematic use of mobile devices is related to higher cognitive failure in students. Is there a strong relationship between problematic mobile device use and cognitive failure in adults? If so, does that relationship remain when controlling for psychological well-being? In two samples of American adults, psychological well-being and distress accounted for over 70% of variance in everyday cognitive failures, as did problematic mobile device use. However, when controlling for psychological well-being, problematic mobile device use accounted for an additional 2% of variance. Well-being and device use overlap in relationship to cognitive failures.

Moral character development has long been a concern of educators. A recent resurgence of scholarship in neuro-biology and cognitive science has further energized this interest. How can this research and best practices be integrated into faith based high school and college curricular and co-curricular programming? We highlight key trends and resent discoveries and discuss promising practices, starting with professional development programs. We also offer a new paradigm of “moral health and well-being” that promises to involve the head (moral thinking), heart (emotions) and hand (behavior and actions) in this important learning process.

This exploratory study examined psychological wellness and resilience as predictors of conspiracist beliefs, disaster response beliefs, and disaster misconceptions beliefs. Data was collected from 300 participants through Amazon’s MTurk. Scholars often cite the transition from the golden age to the hardboiled tradition in the 1920s and 1930s as the most radical shift in crime fiction. By 1945, crime stories regularly exhibited destabilized language, increased interest in psychology of the mind, and a blatant rejection of conclusive endings as a means of exploring the unreliable nature of memory and eye-witness testimony. We analyzed the relationships between religious internalization and social support, religious fundamentalism, and motivation for Divine and human relationships. 306 respondents from a religiously-affiliated university were recruited to completed an online survey. Our results suggested Divine relationships were most related to identification while fundamentalism was most related to introjection.

Abstract

Objective: to examine the relationship between peer association and perception of harms and benefits associated marijuana use among Jamaican adolescents. Method: The purpose of the study is to examine the relationship between peer association and perception of harms and benefits associated with marijuana use among 300 Jamaican adolescents in grades 10 and 11. Results: Results indicated lifetime prevalence for marijuana use was higher for total males 34% compared to total females 26%. Overall lifetime prevalence roused by 4% in the move from grade 10 or form 4 to grade 11 or fifth form. Data reveal the mean age …

In the spring of 2018, the Institute for the Prevention of Addictions conducted a survey of students at Andrews University (N=650). While a wide variety of health data were collected, this study focused on sexual orientation and mental health. Mental health was measured using the DASS depression, anxiety and stress scales. Sexual orientation was determined from the survey data. Bisexual students were significantly more likely to be classified in the extreme categories of the DASS compared to heterosexual students. These large differences indicate a significant mental health issue that the university needs to address.

We report a two-factor model of effective and failed nurture in the church—encouragement for wholeheartedness, efficacy in ministry, and belonging. Effective nurture explained a small amount of variance in well-being beyond controls including religious affiliation and behaviors, while failure to nurture explained substantial variance in religious stress and struggle.

The 2017-18 Global Church Member Survey conducted by the General Conference of the Seventh-day Adventist Church is designed to assess the quinquennial Church Strategic Plan (2015-2020). In designing this survey, we considered a variety of theoretical frameworks that could explain relationships between the target outcomes in the Strategic Plan. The proposed research study is a part of 2017 Church Member Global Survey that provides relevant data on EUD members regarding their faith and convictions, spiritual life related behaviors and habits, in-group and out-group attitudes that translate into community oriented and mission oriented behaviors and initiatives.

The research has been carried out on a representative sample of the EUD members from 10 out of its 11 Unions. The research results are part of the preliminary report describing the main trends in EUD regarding membership, attitudes, beliefs and behaviors directly related to the SDA core values.

This paper presents an overview of current school violence prevention concerns and practices in Jamaica. Convenience sampling was used to select 204 educators throughout Jamaica with a modal age group of 31-40 years. The participants included educators and practitioners such as school counsellors in the Jamaican school system. Respondent scores on the School Violence Questionnaire and Research Protocol were used to provide the data for this study. What variables are the strongest predictors of religious identification? Religious internalization can be broken down into identification, the full adoption of religious values, and introjection, a partial internalization of values. Fundamentalism is one variable thought to predict these motivational types. We defined fundamentalism as the degree to which someone holds their sacred texts as true. Additionally, social support relates to religious internalization. In the United States, it wasn’t until 1871 that the first state (Alabama) rescinded the “husbandly” right to physically punish their wives. The primary goal of this study is to replicate the work of Mar, Oatley, Hirsh, dela Paz, and Peterson (2006) on the relationships of narrative and non-narrative texts with empathy and social reasoning in a Seventh-day Adventist Christian sample. The second goal is to examine how different types of Biblical texts correlate with the development of social reasoning in Adventists. Results are expected to mirror those of the original study regardless of religious affiliation. An implication of this study is that for an Adventist population, exposure to religious narratives may play a role in how empathy and social reasoning develops.

Attitudes towards LGBT are shifting, with over half (51%) of the US population now favoring same-sex marriage. LGBT issues are also being hotly debated in the Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) church. The purpose of this research is to examine how the film, ‘Seventh-Gay Adventist’ (SGA) influences SDA college students’ attitudes regarding homosexuality. My study will compare attitude scores of students using an experimental design with random assignment.
