Objectives of this study were: (a) to evaluate several N soil tests that are used to estimate soil N availability, and (b) to measure the distribution of inorganic N in the soil profile after an application of fertilizer N. Small grain yield response from an application of 17, 34, or 67 kg N/ha was used as the parameter of N availability. These parameters were related to 23 independent variables by use of a step wise multiple regression program. Purposes of this study were to find an effective herbicide for control of grassy weeds in a pasture, to adapt known laboratory procedures for analyzing residues and to determine amounts of residues during the growing season in treated plots. Nine herbicides were screened for controlling grassy weeds, primarily downy brome (Bromus tectorum L.) in a native pasture. Data indicated 2-chloro-4-ethylamino-6-isopropylamino-s-triazine (atrazine) applied postemergence at 1 lb/A was the most effective at 85% control. The following year, atrazine, 2-chloro-4, 6-bis­ (ethylamino)-s-triazine (simazine) and 2, 2-dichloropropionic acid (dalapon) each at 1, 2 and 3 lb/A were applied preemergence to switchgrass pasture. To learn more about oils and how they affect post-emergence spray applications of herbicides, two major problem areas were investigated. The first dealt with specific physical and chemical properties of oils as they are associated with phytotoxicity and enhancement of herbicidal activity, while the second dealt with foliar penetration as a possible mechanism of enhancement. Simple correlation and multiple regression analyses were conducted for specific properties of mineral oils applied to green foxtail (Setaria verdis (L.) Populations from a cross are grown until they become homozygous before much selection by comparative yield trails can be made. A considerable number of economic seeds are characterized by the presence of oil instead of starch as reserved material. The flax plant produces an oil-bearing seed which yields either by pressure or by extraction an oil which is used chiefly in the manufacture of paints and varnishes, and in the manufacture of linoleum, oil cloth, printer's ink, and patent leather. The oil obtained from flexseed is known as linseed oil and is one of a class of fatty oils known as drying oil. In 1930 Mr. Emil Madsen of this laboratory began some experimental work upon the roots of dandelions, for the purpose of determining the means by which a dandelion root, which has been cut off below the surface of the ground, regenerates new shoots. He found that such roots form adventitious buds in exposed pericycle and secondary phloem. Several such buds may be formed in a single root. They grow and appear above the ground as leafy shoot.

Water shoots or long shoots are those which appear low on the trunks of trees, or about stumps of trees recently cut down. The ordinary twigs are those found at the ends of branches. Botanists have long been interested in the manner of "sex expression" in plants. Some plant shave perfect flowers, that is, both sexes are expressed in a single flower, with no variation from this condition within the species. Apparently very little, if any, anatomical investigation has been made of the bulbil of Lilium tigrinum, though it has often been used as a propagating organ and consequently, the problem suggested attractive possibilities in an almost virgin field of investigation. Collections were made from five different plants beginning Sept. 27, 1928 until July 22, 1929. The older bulbils were removed from the axils of the foliage leaves and fixed in formalin acetic alcohol. In Heimlich’s recent paper (2) on the staminate flower of Cucumis sativus, the conclusion was reached that the tetrasporangiate stamen was complete while the bisporangiate stamen was only half complete. In Miller’s more recent investigation of Schinocystis lobata (4), the bisporangiate stamen was shown to be complete and the tetrasporangiate stamen double. These opposing points of view suggest the advisability of further investigation in the Cucurbitaceae. Since Heimlich described two separate apical prolongations on each tetrasporangiate stamen and only one on the bisporangiate stamen, it seemed to the present writer that these prolongations might indicate the double and single natures …

  1. Treatment with ethylene chlorhydrin produced marked results in the respiration of four of five varieties of sweet potatoes tried.
  2. Not all varieties of sweet potatoes respond alike to the same treatment. Porto Rico variety of sweet potatoes did not respond to the treatment.
  3. There was a considerable difference in the amount of CO2 respired by different varieties.
  4. The need for further research here with respect to the specific effect of chemicals upon the cell system becomes apparent and again emphasizes the importance of Biochemistry.

The Agricultural Census of the United States for 1920 shows that plums rank second to apples in value in comparison with the other orchard fruits, small fruits and grapes produced in South Dakota. There was an eighty-two percent increase in the value of all orchard fruits produced during the year 1919 over the year 1909.
