Glucose-6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase Deficiency, Daniel N. Mohler
Glucose-6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase Deficiency, Daniel N. Mohler
MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly
Major attention was first focused on the problem of acute hemolytic anemia in the early 1950's, during the Korean War. Large numbers of American Negroes stationed in Korea developed this anemia after taking primaquine for treatment or prophylaxis of malaria. A study group was formed in Chicago under the direction of Alving; it was this group of investigators who contributed much of the early information which has led to our understanding of this type of anemia (Dern, et al, 1954; Dern, Beutler and Alving, 1954; Beutler, Dern, and Alving, 1954). This also resulted in an upsurge of interest in red …
The Development Of A Comprehensive Health Care Program For Patients With Active Tuberculosis, Grace G. Eddison, Barbara M. Farmer
The Development Of A Comprehensive Health Care Program For Patients With Active Tuberculosis, Grace G. Eddison, Barbara M. Farmer
MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly
Concepts basic to effective medical care evolved from the development of a comprehensive health service program for patients with tuberculosis. The key to success was found in a basic philosophy underlying all interpersonal relationships-the conviction that all men are equal. This philosophy then became the motivating force behind the creation of a functioning multidisciplinary team in which there was developed a freedom of relationships between each team member, and between team members and patients. The effectiveness of this approach in comprehensive medical care was illustrated by examples of special services and programming which were designed to reach all levels of …
The New Hemoglobinopathies, Robert M. Cooper
The New Hemoglobinopathies, Robert M. Cooper
MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly
The clinical explorations which have resulted from studies of mutant hemoglobin have allowed definition of a variety of syndromes whose manifestations require explanation in terms of the effects of molecular distortion on physiological processes. The discovery of various hemoglobinopathies has demonstrated that specific molecular defects may express themselves in various pathophysiological manifestations. More detailed pathophysiological studies of patients with hemoglobinopathies should be performed to gain a better understanding of the expression of molecular disease.

Drug Addiction In Youth: The High School And College Level, Shirley Anne Percy
Honors Theses
In a world undergoing enormous transitions, where familial and social supports are eroding and established beliefs are gradually being demolished, it is natural that many will try to modify their awareness--to ease the uncertainties of the day, to avoid psychic pain, to achieve pleasure, to find faith. The old gods falter; the old goals seem pointless. What is left but to chemically dull the senses or, alternatively, create new illustions, new utopian worlds? So it has been in every period of stress; so it is today.
Man changes his world enormously but himself minimally. He has created instant news, transportation …
Differential Spectrophotometric Analysis Of Intravenous Admixtures Containing Metaraminol With Selected Corticosteroids, Frederick Erin Turner
Differential Spectrophotometric Analysis Of Intravenous Admixtures Containing Metaraminol With Selected Corticosteroids, Frederick Erin Turner
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
Intravenous admixtures consisting of one or more drug formulations, diluted in a large volume of intravenous solution, are used extensively in current medical practice. Development of reliable methods to predict the compatibility of the admixture components is essential as a guide for their selection.
Because the majority of the reports published, to date, have used a visible change as the criterion for judging compatibility, it was the purpose of this study to demonstrate the use of spectrophotometric analysis to detect the occurrence of chemical interactions between two components of an intravenous admixture.

A Study Of The Amphetamine Abuser: Personality Characteristics And “Meaning To Life”, Terrence L. Esch
A Study Of The Amphetamine Abuser: Personality Characteristics And “Meaning To Life”, Terrence L. Esch
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
This paper will review the literature on amphetamine abuse after which I will discuss some implications for treatment. I will propose an empirical study that should help clarify a major assumption that is apparent in the literature. This study will then point out the possibility of a method of treatment that can be effective in helping amphetamine abusers.
The papers consists of three major themes: (a) Review of the Literature, (b) Implications for treatment, and (c) a proposed empirical study questioning the difference of personality traits and “meaning to life” between amphetamine abusers and youth who are considered to be …
A Validation Study Of The Predictive Screening Test Of Articulation, Stanley G. Kibbey
A Validation Study Of The Predictive Screening Test Of Articulation, Stanley G. Kibbey
All Master's Theses
The primary purpose of this study will be to conduct a test of the validity of the Predictive Screening Test of Articulation. Does the PSTA identify first grade children who will master their articulation errors without speech therapy by the time they enter third grade? Conversely, does the PSTA identify first grade children who will not master their articulation errors without speech therapy by the time they enter third grade? In short, does the PSTA predict as expected? Secondary purposes of this study include the assessment of the possible effects of sex, age, intellectual functioning and socioeconomic status on the …

The Application Of An Index To Determine Genetic And Environhental Contributions To Dentofacial Growth In Twins And Siblings, Richard Charles Hayes
The Application Of An Index To Determine Genetic And Environhental Contributions To Dentofacial Growth In Twins And Siblings, Richard Charles Hayes
Theses and Dissertations
The method of principal components may be used to reduce a large quantity of data for an individual into a single statistic, a growth index, indicative of overall facial growth, and to make a determination of the relative contribution of each variable, as well as the genotype and the environment, to the variation between individuals, When this method is applied to four consecutive years of cephalometric and anthropometric data from each of 95 children, consisting of Caucasian and Negro monozygotic twins, like-sexed dizygotic twins, and their siblings of both sexes, it discloses that:
1. The relative contributions of the variables …
