Concentration Of An Oxidized Lead Ore From Southeast Missouri, Robert Edward Evans Jan 1932

Concentration Of An Oxidized Lead Ore From Southeast Missouri, Robert Edward Evans

Masters Theses

"In the main ore bodies of the Southeast Missouri Lead Belt the lead occurs as galena disseminated in dolomite. The concentration in the mills is by tabling and flotation. The grade of the concentrates and the recovery of the galena are excellent. However, in certain areas of some of the mines ore has been developed that does not concentrate so readily. Because of its reddish brown color this ore is known locally as "red ore", and the presence of oxidized lead has been suspected. The purpose of this investigation was to determine the extent to which oxidized lead minerals were …

The Control Of Anode Corrosion, Edward Arthur Godat Jan 1932

The Control Of Anode Corrosion, Edward Arthur Godat

Masters Theses

"This particular study of the control of anode corrosion in connection with the production of zinc by electrolytic deposition from commercial solutions is a continuation of work started at the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy in 1929. It is not a new problem or even a new phase of the problem, but rather an attempt to confirm some of the ideas brought out in previous work and to perhaps more definitely establish some of the conclusions drawn from insufficient data, by more extensive tests and by attacking the problem from a slightly different angle"--Introduction, page 1.

A Study Of Anode Corrosion And Its Influence On Cathode Purity In Electrolytic Zinc Production, Harold John Roesser Jan 1931

A Study Of Anode Corrosion And Its Influence On Cathode Purity In Electrolytic Zinc Production, Harold John Roesser

"Anode corrosion is a problem with which electrolytic zinc producers have been concerned from the beginning of the practice. It has been attacked here from the view of modern practice, using alloyed anodes"--Introduction, page 1.

Flotation Of A Western Complex Ore, Guy Verdier Martin Jan 1931

Flotation Of A Western Complex Ore, Guy Verdier Martin

Masters Theses

"The flotation of the complex sulphide ore, which is the subject of this investigation, has been in progress on a large scale for several years. As the operation has been successful it follows that the ore dressing methods have been developed in much detail. For further improvements an intense investigation is required. The complex nature of the ore opens many avenues of research along some of which clues may be found that will lead to ultimate savings. It is along a few of these avenues that this investigation has been directed. Hence an effort was made to add to the …

Masters Theses

"The purpose of this investigation is to compare the phenomena observed in concentrating a zinc ore by flotation, using a constant and new flowsheet as described a few pages later and varying only the sizes to which the headsamples are ground previous to each test"--Summary, page 1.

Laboratory Concentration Of The Missouri Iron Ores Of Iron Mountain And Pilot Knob, Strathmore Ridley Barnott Cooke Jan 1930

Laboratory Concentration Of The Missouri Iron Ores Of Iron Mountain And Pilot Knob, Strathmore Ridley Barnott Cooke

Masters Theses

"The purpose of this investigation was to ascertain whether the more important iron ores of Missouri would be amenable to beneficiation to produce high grade concentrates. In the southeastern section of Missouri are found many small deposits of high grade iron ores, and a few large deposits of comparatively low grade ore. The former consist chiefly of red and brown hematite and limonite ores that are in no need of beneficiation. the low grade iron orebodies are relatively large in extent, and, if they could be beneficiated successully [sic] and economically would be of value. Accordingly, the major portion of …

Salts In Tri-State Mill Waters: Their Ill-Effect On The Flotation Of Zinc And Their Removal, Warren Lincoln Howes Jan 1930

Salts In Tri-State Mill Waters: Their Ill-Effect On The Flotation Of Zinc And Their Removal, Warren Lincoln Howes

Masters Theses

"The application of the flotation process has become one of the greatest innovations in modern ore dressing. In a comparatively short span of years it has grown to be one of the most powerful tools of the ore dressing engineer. Flotation is particularly adapted for the recovery of finely ground mineral and has thus enabled the miner to open up enormous deposits of low grade, disseminated ores for profitable treatment. In conjunction with other methods, the process has raised the recovery in practically every ore dressing plant by the treatment of slimes which otherwise would go to waste, carrying valuable …

A Power Study Of A Laboratory Ball Mill, Frederick Clearman Jan 1930

A Power Study Of A Laboratory Ball Mill, Frederick Clearman

Masters Theses

"Ball milling practice in the ore dressing industry is largely empirical. Although many investigators have worked on various of its phases, the present operating methods are mostly a matter of cut-and-try, with the result that the industry is not guided by its underlying principles. Consequently, practice varies extensively with regard to nearly all conditions of operations. Even in neighboring concentrators such factors as speed, ball charge, and ore load differ in similar ball mills. Since fine grinding is continually becoming of more importance, and often accounts for thirty per cent of the milling cost, it is very necessary that a …

Masters Theses

"In the fall of 1924 the Mississippi Valley Experiment Station of the United States Bureau of Mines, Department of Commerce, in cooperation with the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy began an investigation of the properties of raw materials used in the manufacture of retorts for the zinc industry. The investigation proceeded cooperatively until December, 1926, when the Bureau of Mines withdrew from ceramic research. The School then took over and is completing the problem as outlined. The first phase of the investigation had for its object the determination of the properties of the fireclays and body mixtures now in …

Electrothermic Dry Distillation Of Zinc, Ira Nathan Goff Jan 1926

Electrothermic Dry Distillation Of Zinc, Ira Nathan Goff

Masters Theses

"Although the work described in this thesis cannot be considered as complete, until certain mechanical changes have been made and the furnace operated continuously over a considerable period of time, this electrothermic dry distillation process for the extraction of zinc from ores offers excellent commercial possibilities. The literature has been reviewed, the process that was used at East St. Louis described, and the results of work at the Mississippi Valley Experiment Station of the United States Bureau of Mines, Department of Commerce, Rolla, Missouri along the line of electrothermic metallurgy of zinc considered"--Summary, page 58.

This investigation has been in progress for the past eighteen months at the Mississippi Valley Experiment Station of the United States Bureau of Mines, Department of Commerce, in cooperation with the School of Mines and Metallurgy of the University of Missouri. The first phase of this investigation had for its theme the determination of the properties of the fire clays and body mixtures now used in the manufacture of zinc retorts. The second phase deals with the …

The Properties Of The Fire Clays Used For The Manufacture Of Zinc Retorts, Adolph Harmon Kuechler Jan 1925

The Properties Of The Fire Clays Used For The Manufacture Of Zinc Retorts, Adolph Harmon Kuechler

Masters Theses

"The ultimate object of this refractories investigation is to develop a body for zinc retorts, or changes in the method of their manufacture, that will result in better retorts than the ones now in use. In doing this, the question of permissible cost must, at all times, be kept in mind. The immediate object of the present phase of this investigation, of which this thesis covers only a part, is to determine the physical and chemical properties of the refractories (fire clays, grogs, bodies, etc.) now used for the manufacture of zinc retorts. This will be a basis for later …

Hydro-Electric Treatment Of Joplin-Miami Zinc Concentrate, David Francis Walsh Jan 1924

Hydro-Electric Treatment Of Joplin-Miami Zinc Concentrate, David Francis Walsh

Masters Theses

"The Electrolytic Process is a process capable of almost unlimited mechanicalization. For obvious reasons it is more economic to treat high grade concentrates; yet, the extremely high grade concentrates are not essential. The Electrolytic Process can treat economically concentrates as low as 30.% zinc under certain conditions. It is significant that as the grade of concentrates offered for treatment is lowered, the treatment cost per ton of concentrates decreases for the Electrolytic Process; whereas, it will increase, as previously stated, for the Retort Process. It is seen then that the position of the Electrolytic Process is strengthened where lower grade …

The Reduction Of Zinc Oxide By Carbon, George August Zeller Jan 1924

The Reduction Of Zinc Oxide By Carbon, George August Zeller

Masters Theses

"In spite of the fact that the reduction of zinc oxide by carbon is the fundamental reaction upon which the pyrometallurgy of zinc is based, there is a decided lack of accurate knowledge concerning the mechanism of the reaction, the temperature at which it begins, and the effect of various factors upon the rate at which it takes place"--Introduction, page 1.

On Plain Carbon Steel, Walter Edward Remmers Jan 1924

On Plain Carbon Steel, Walter Edward Remmers

Masters Theses

"In 1921, an investigation was carried on by Messrs. Howe, Foley and Winlock, under the auspices of the National Research Council, the results of which were published under the title of - "Influence of Temperature, Time and Rate of Cooling on Physical Properties of Carbon Steel," by the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, February, 1923. These results showed that all physical properties of a 0.34 C. percent steel are improved by increasing the rate of cooling from temperatures above the critical range up to a certain rapidity beyond which, there is a gain in strength at the expense …

On The Breakage Of Rock Drill Steel, Muir Luken Frey Jan 1923

On The Breakage Of Rock Drill Steel, Muir Luken Frey

Masters Theses

"Prior to 1920 there was little attention paid to the general problem of breakage of rock drill steel. Each locality had its problem and the matter was treated as a purely local one, independent upon conditions in that particular section. But in the above-mentioned year, there arose an interest of wider scope, from what causes it is impossible to determine accurately, and the matter is now the subject of a broad investigation in which the users of rock drill steel, the United States Bureau of Mines, and the United States Bureau of Standards are cooperating...There is, to date, no satisfactory …

Effect Of Time And Temperature On Distillation Of Zinc-Lead-Silver Complex Sulphide Concentrates, Ernest Sterling Wheeler Jan 1923

Effect Of Time And Temperature On Distillation Of Zinc-Lead-Silver Complex Sulphide Concentrates, Ernest Sterling Wheeler

Masters Theses

"Accurate information is lacking as to the effect of temperature and time of distillation on the relative proportions of zinc, lead and silver volatilized from complex ores, and while it is evident that the possibility of the commercial treatment of these complex ores has engaged the attention of metallurgists for years, it is one that will still bear investigation even on a small scale"--Statement of Problem, page 5.

Drill Steel Investigation, Joseph Herman Rohloff Jan 1922

Drill Steel Investigation, Joseph Herman Rohloff

Masters Theses

"Several brands of standard grade drill steel were obtained [and tested]"--page 1.

High Speed Steel - Its History, Development, Manfacture, Metallography, And Constitution, Including An Extended Bibliography, James Presley Gill Jan 1922

High Speed Steel - Its History, Development, Manfacture, Metallography, And Constitution, Including An Extended Bibliography, James Presley Gill

Masters Theses

"There is no doubt but that the making of Steel was known and practiced by the early Greeks probably several centuries before the birth of Christ. There have been discoveries of pre-historic forges and smelters evidently used for the making of iron and steel and it is certain that implements made of these materials dates back to antiquity. As to the methods of making the steels of antiquity there is little known, but it is quite probable since iron has a strong affinity for carbon that in the forging of the iron it's contact with the carbonaceous fuel would absorb …

The Factors Influencing The Price Of Metals On The Metal Market, Thomas Patrick F. Walsh Jan 1920

The Factors Influencing The Price Of Metals On The Metal Market, Thomas Patrick F. Walsh

Masters Theses

"Every year the various engineering and industrial magazines print curves showing the rise and fall of metal stocks throughout the year. to the ordinary reader, these curves are seldom intelligible; he sees the ups and downs; he knows that the prices have risen and fallen; but he rarely knows what causes these changes -- and the curves themselves never tell. This paper tries to remedy this defect; it draws its curves, and, in the light of historical events, which it recounts, tries to determine the causes for the fluctuations in the market. it further places these factors on the curve …

Graphics And Its Application To The Progress And Cost Analyses Of A House Building Construction Company, Frank Lewis Leonard Wilson Jan 1919

Graphics And Its Application To The Progress And Cost Analyses Of A House Building Construction Company, Frank Lewis Leonard Wilson

Masters Theses

"In the graphical analyses of Stresses in Framed Structures, we study, by means of diagrams, the stability or equilibrium of structures and the relation between the external forces and the stresses created in the members of the frame. The principle involved is that we may represent any force both as to direction and intensity by a straight line, by considering the direction of the line to be identical with that of the force and adjusting its length according to any arbitrary unit adopted for the forces under consideration. By this means we can solve the stresses in framed structures with …
