A Note On The Accentuation Of Damascene Arabic, John J. Mccarthy Jan 1980

A Note On The Accentuation Of Damascene Arabic, John J. Mccarthy

Linguistics Department Faculty Publication Series

Three models of metrical stress assignment in the Arabic dialect of Damascus (Halle and Vergnaud 1978; McCarthy 1979a, b; Hayes 1979) are considered. On the basis of anomalies in the stressing of third person feminine singular perfective verbs with pronominal suffixes, it is shown that the mora-counting ternary foot model of McCarthy (1979a, b) is superior. In addition, support is provided for cyclic assignment of metrical structure (Kiparsky 1979).

On Stress And Syllabification, John J. Mccarthy Jan 1979

On Stress And Syllabification, John J. Mccarthy

John J. McCarthy

Of all the diverse properties of segmental strings, syllable structure is the one that stress rules most often refer to. In fact, they refer to a quite specific aspect of syllable structure: syllable weight. Generally, it is this distinction between heavy and light syllables that affects the placement of stress. The richness of this problem is apparent from its ramifications. First, in many languages the notion "heavy syllable" invokes a disjunction of syllables containing a long vowel or diphthong and syllables with a short vowel but closed by a consonant. Second, though heavy syllables often attract the stress, they sometimes …

Capturing The Adjective, Muffy E. A. Siegel Jan 1976

Capturing The Adjective, Muffy E. A. Siegel

Doctoral Dissertations 1896 - February 2014

Capturing the Adjective presents a formal, Montague Grammar treatment of an intuitively accessible distinction among adjectives. Many adjective meanings are computed relative to the properties corresponding to the common nouns they modify, but adjectives may also be absolute modifiers of individuals. Marya is a beautiful dancer may mean either that Marya is beautiful as a dancer – she dances beautifully (relative) or that Marya herself is beautiful (absolute).

The dissertation documents the relative/absolute distinction in Russian (where it is morphologically marked as long versus short) and in English (where it is not so marked, and some adjectives are exclusively relative …

Have And Be In English Syntax, Emmon Bach Jan 1967

Have And Be In English Syntax, Emmon Bach

Linguistics Department Faculty Publication Series

A re-analysis of English syntax is proposed, in which the forms have and be in their use as 'main verbs' are eliminated from the base and reintroduced by transformational rules. The rules are shown to be minor additions to rules required on independent grounds. Syntactic arguments are given first, then answers to possiblesemantic objections. It is further suggested that the use of these forms as auxiliaries can be explained in the same way.The resulting base rules are shown to be somewhat closer to a reasonable set of universal base rules than the corresponding rules of earlier analyses. The paper concludes with …
