Covalent Binding And Other Mechanisms Of Primaquine Toxicity, Lucille S. K. Chau Yau
Covalent Binding And Other Mechanisms Of Primaquine Toxicity, Lucille S. K. Chau Yau
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
A dose-dependent covalent binding of primaquine to mouse liver microsomal protein was found in both in vitro and in vivo studies. The binding in vitro was linear during the first 90 minutes of incubation and dependent on the concentration of mouse liver microsomal protein. The in vitro covalent binding was markedly enhanced by cofactors. Pretreatment of mice with phenobarbital, a cytochrome P450 inducer, increased the microsomal cytochrome P450 content and the in vitro covalent binding significantly. Binding was markedly inhibited when microsomal metabolism inhibitors (SK&F-525A, metyrapone and piperonyl butoxide), and sulfhydryl-contai ni ng compounds were added to the incubation system. …
The Distribution And Morphology Of Fucus Distichus In An Estuarine Environment And The Effect Of Selected Ions On The Uptake Of Inorganic Carbon And Nitrate, Dale Howard Robinson
The Distribution And Morphology Of Fucus Distichus In An Estuarine Environment And The Effect Of Selected Ions On The Uptake Of Inorganic Carbon And Nitrate, Dale Howard Robinson
Dissertations and Theses
The morphology, distribution, and habitat of dwarf and normal forms of Fucus distichus in Nehalem Bay were examined. The dwarf form lacked the holdfast and sexual structures of the normal form and was more highly branched. Examples of the dwarf form were found growing as outgrowths of fragmented normal forms indicating that both forms are the same species. The normal form occurred attached to rocks near the mouth of the bay in waters of oceanic salinity. The dwarf form occurred as a free-living form in the salt marshes and in waters of lower salinity. These observations suggested that the occurrence …
The Role Of The Adrenal Cortex In Fat Metabolism Of Meriones Unguiculatus, The Mongolian Gerbil, Saffia Baggia
The Role Of The Adrenal Cortex In Fat Metabolism Of Meriones Unguiculatus, The Mongolian Gerbil, Saffia Baggia
Master's Theses
The effects of adrenalectomy and corticoid replacement therapies on survival, weight loss, depot fat and blood free fatty acid were studied in Meriones unguiculatus, the Mongolian gerbil. Adrenalectomized gerbils that received cortisol and aldosterone lived significantly longer and lost significantly more weight than the controls (adrenalectomized gerbils not receiving any treatment) and the sham-operated groups. Cortisol and aldosterone treatment were also effective in mobilizing significantly greater amounts of depot fat into free fatty acid. Cortisol and aldosterone treated groups had significantly less blood free fatty acid than the control and the sham-operated groups.

The Role Of Adrenomedullary Hormones In Survival Of The Adrenalectomized Mongolian Gerbil, Meriones Unguiculatus, Carol B. Ussery
Master's Theses
Thee effects of adrenalectomy and catecholamine replacement therapy on survival were studied in Meriones unguiculatus, the Mongolian gerbil. Adrenalectomized gerbils that received epinephrine lived significantly longer than the controls untreated adrenalectomized gerbils) and animals that received either norepinephrine or a combination of epinephrine and norepinephrine. Results also indicated that these epinephrine-treated animals lost more depot fat that either controls or other groups receiving treatment. In spite of the short survival benefit given by epinephrine, the mechanisms governing the critical adrenal dependency in this species remain unknown.

Effect Of Forage Feeding And Length Of Grain Finishing Period On Selected Performance, Carcass, And Sensory Characteristics Of Serially Slaughtered Hereford Steers Of Varying Frame Score Classifications, Henry Walker Stockley Iii
Masters Theses
Eighty-one Hereford steers were backgrounded on fescue-orchard grass-clover pasture and then removed after summer grazing and assigned subjective scores for frame size and muscling. Steers were then fed whole shelled corn ad libitum for 0, 28, 56, 84, 112, and 140 days on feed (DOF), evaluated for performance traits and slaughtered. Carcass data were collected then the left side of each carcass was fabricated and evaluated for various yield, quality, chemical, physical, and palatability characteristics.
Large framed steers had heavier live weights (P<.05) and were taller at the withers (P<.05) than small framed steers throughout the forage feeding phase. All frame size groups were similar in ultrasonic fat thickness measurements during forage feeding.
During grain-finishing, the large framed steers were taller (P<.05) at the withers than the small-framed cattle through 140 DOF but past 28 DOF no advantage in frame size, with respect to live weights was discovered. Live fat thickness measurements did not differ (P>.05) among frame size groups. The small framed …
Habitat Utilization And Movement Ecology Of Black Bears In Cherokee National Forest, R. Steven Garris
Habitat Utilization And Movement Ecology Of Black Bears In Cherokee National Forest, R. Steven Garris
Masters Theses
Home range, movements, and habitat use of black bears in the Cherokee National Forest were monitored from June 1980 through December 1981.
In 1980, home range sizes averaged 192 km2 for male bears and 23 km2 for females, whereas the average range in 1981 for males was 60 km2 and 15 km2 for females. Larger ranges for males likely reflect a social structure that enhances reproduction. Differences in home range sizes between years was attributed to the availability and abundance of hard mast, especially acorns. Both sexes exhibited seasonal shifts in range use between summer and …

A Survey Of Glycosphingolipids In The Human Aorta: Their Relationship To Glycosphingolipids Of Blood And To Atherosclerosis, John L. Nappier
Dissertations
The four major glycosphingolipids, glucosyl ceramide, lactosyl ceramide, galactosyl lactosyl ceramide and globoside were isolated from both diseased and normal tissue from human aorta by solvent extraction followed by solvent partitioning and column chromatography. The levels of each were then determind quantitatively by high pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC) after derivatization. The individual glycosphingolipids were isolated by semi-preparative HPLC and the fatty acid composition of each was determined, after methanolysis, by gas chromatography.
In the diseased tissue, the amount of glycosphingolipid as well as the amount of crude lipid increased relative to the normal tissue. The relative amounts of cerebrosides increased …

Audiological Characteristics Of The Monge Family Of Costa Rica, Christine Moulton
Dissertations and Theses
The audiological characteristics of the Monge family of Costa Rica were investigated in a sample of fifty-two affected members and twelve unaffected members. Through laboratory analysis by staff personnel from the University of Costa Rica and audiological test results obtained in the present investigation, it was concluded that affected Monge members demonstrate a slowly progressive low frequency sensorineural hearing loss of autosomal dominant transmission. The initial site of lesion appears to be the apical portion of the cochlea, with significant onset occurring during early childhood following normal speech and language acquisition. The rate at which the hearing loss progresses and …
Comparison Of Responses To Weight Training In Prepubescent And Adult Males, Margaret M. Sailors
Comparison Of Responses To Weight Training In Prepubescent And Adult Males, Margaret M. Sailors
Student Work
The effect of overload training on adults has been considered for thousands of years. Centuries before Christ, Milo of Crotona carried a calf on his back daily until the animal was full-grown, resulting in one of the earliest accounts of the overload principle (Bergan & Scoles, 1979). Results of overload training on adults have been well documented (Tanner, 1952; Hellebrandt & Houtz, 1958; Berger,1962a; 1962b; Rasch & Pierson, 1963; Berger & Hardage, 1967; Stull & Clark, 1970; Leighton, Holmes, Benson, Wooten & Schmerer, 1967; Wilmore, 1975; Gettman, Ward & Hager, 1982). However, how overload affects children and adolescents is barely …

A Model Of The Population Dynamics Of The Blue Crab In Chesapeake Bay, Betty Springer Hester
A Model Of The Population Dynamics Of The Blue Crab In Chesapeake Bay, Betty Springer Hester
OES Theses and Dissertations
This study has particular application to the blue crab fisheries in Chesapeake Bay, an economically important industry whose successful management has been hindered by relatively poor understanding of the population dynamics. Recent biological studies have indicated a systematic spawning behavior which seems designed for ejection of larvae seaward from the bay entrance where they spend their pre-metamorphosis stages in the neuston. A physical mechanism for retention of the larvae in sufficient proximity to the bay entrance for their return at the proper time which involves the action of wind stress in shallow waters is proposed. Since the supply of blue …

Simultaneous Functional Hermaphroditism In The Shrimp Hippolysmata Wurdemanni (Gibbes) (Decopoda: Caridea: Hippolytidae), Marie Hollister Bundy
OES Theses and Dissertations
The caridean shrimp Hippolysmata wurdemanni Gibbes was studied from a histological and a behavioral basis and was found to be a protandric hermaphrodite which later adopts simultaneous functional hermaphroditism. When the animal reaches a certain size, the androgenic gland degenerates, the male secondary sexual characteristics are lost, and vitellogenesis occurs in the anterior portion of the gonad. The animals do not lose the ability to function as males as evidenced by the presence of mature sperm in the gonad and the gonadal lumen of gravid shrimp, and the ability of both members of an isolated pair of shrimp to repeatedly …

The Effect Of Crowding On Growth Of The Cichlid Fish, Oreochromis Mossambicus, Bonnie A. Barrows
OES Theses and Dissertations
It has been reported that the Java tilapia, Oreochromis mossambicus, displays hypersensitivity to a substance it produces when biomass levels in a flow-through culture system exceed 20 g/1, resulting in reduced growth and high mortality. Experiments on the growth of this species in small tanks were conducted in order to determine whether O. mossambicus produces a growth-inhibiting compound under crowded conditions. This species was successfully maintained at biomass levels of 38 g/1 and 57 g/1 with a total mortality of only 4.5%.
The Java tilapia can grow rapidly in small aquaria, as indicated by the data taken during Experiment …

The Separation Of Cotton And Polyester In Rags, Susan M. Gardineer
Paper Engineering Senior Theses
The purpose of this thesis was to discover if there was a way to remove or destroy the polyester from rags and leave the cotton in a form which is beneficial to the paper industry. An attempt was made to break up the rags, remove the polyester and evaluate the remaining cotton. The tests were attempted on a fibrous combination of cotton and polyester.
The general trend found that the chemical treatments to the rags from the textile mills gave additional problems and should be investigated.

Age-Changes Of The Neuronal Component Of Meissner Corpuscles In The Mouse Digital Pad, Roger C. Mathewson
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Silver impregnated sections of mouse digital pads were studied using light microscopy to detect age-related changes of the neuronal component of Meissner corpuscles. Direct microscopic observation, photomicrographs and camera lucida tracing were utilized. From qualitative observation, the corpuscular neurites were found to undergo morphological age-related changes of diameter, tortuosity, varicosity, branching and terminal expansion size. Quantitative examination was made of the number of corpuscles, corpuscular neurites, branching neurites, cross-innervations, terminal neurite expansions, neurite intraepidermal continuations and terminal axonal processes. The number of corpuscles and neurite intraepidermal continuations decreased with age while having significant linear correlation; whereas, branching increased with age …

Reproduction And Denning Of Black Bears In The Great Smoky Mountains, William Gregory Wathen
Masters Theses
The reproductive biology and denning ecology of black bears were studied in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and Cherokee National Forest. The majority of information was collected from 36 radio-instrumented females monitored from June 1980 to May 1982.
Females entered dens from 21 November to 16 January (x=20 December, n=38), and emerged from 18 March to 4 May (x=10 April, n=41), for an average denning period of 113 days. Females with newborn cubs denned significantly longer (P< 0.001) than other females. Tree denning females emerged later and remained in dens longer than others.
Twenty-five ground dens and 33 tree dens were examined. Significant differences (P< 0.005) in den utilization were observed between winters, with more tree dens being utilized during the winter of 1980-81 (79.3%) than in the winter of 1981-82 (34.5%).
Females in estrus were captured from 22 June to 12 …

The Combined Effect Of Cu And Zn On Selenastrum Capricornutum, Helmer Colonia-Roque
The Combined Effect Of Cu And Zn On Selenastrum Capricornutum, Helmer Colonia-Roque
Dissertations and Theses
It has been demonstrated that the toxicity of heavy metals depends on their chemical speciation and can be related to their free ion activities, rather than the total metal concentrations. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of combined free ions of zinc and copper on the toxicity to the green alga Selenastrum capricornutum. This alga was grown in a defined medium, under controlled laboratory conditions, with a varying range of zinc and copper concentrations. The growth rate of the alga was inhibited at pZn = 5.93 or at pCu = 7.24. The results suggest that …

The Effect Of The Endangered Species Act Of 1973, Robert Palmer Yankle Ii
Theses and Major Papers
Scrimshaw, as an art form, had just recently risen a few notches above the state of obscurity. There are still millions of Americans who probably know nothing about it. Inextricably linked with the whaling industry for years, the scrimshaw industry has recently undergone a remarkable transition. When whaling ended in the United States, scrimshaw moved ashore and some people found out that there was a great deal of money to be made in the scrimshaw business. but with the passage of the Marine Mammals Protection Act in 1973, scrimshanders found themselves being tightly regulated by the Federal government. This paper …
Applying The Concept Of Feeding Stations To The Behavior Of Cattle Grazing Variable Amounts Of Available Forage, Enrique R. Flores
Applying The Concept Of Feeding Stations To The Behavior Of Cattle Grazing Variable Amounts Of Available Forage, Enrique R. Flores
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
A quantitative description of the foraging process is necessary for effective planning and execution of intensive grazing schemes. Foraging behavior is defined as having two components: feeding and moving. At intervals the foraging animal walks a number of steps searching for food and then pauses to feed at a new position here termed a feeding station. Five behavioral variables were analyzed under this framework: 1) time spent at a feed ing station; 2) number of bites at a feeding station; 3) steps taken between stations; 4) rate of steps; and 5) foraging time. The experimental design consisted of grazing small …
