Study Of Bagasse Pulps To Obtain Corrugated Medium, Maria A. Carbonari

Bagasse was used as raw material to pulp various NSSC, Soda and Kraft liquors and evaluated as corrugating medium. A new pulping procedure with the M & K Digester was developed in order to reach maximum temperature at the shortest practical time.

It was found that a 10% Active Alkali at 5% Sulfidity and an NSSC liquor at pH 10 with 15% SO2 on pulp gave suitable strength properties. The NSSC cook gave a higher yield but a pulp with more shives.

The use of secondary fiber as a source of raw material in the paper industry is now an important reality ingrained into papermaking. The reasons for using secondary fiber are many and diversified but most point to economy as the primary factor. With wood and virgin pulp becoming more expensive, secondary fiber will undoubtedly maintain its place in the industry and may increase in the future. This paper will examine the development of joint ventures under the FCMA, the legislative and regulatory measures designed to control these ventures and the procedures for establishing a joint venture. More recent developments in joint venture policy will be examined, including the controversy over squid joint ventures on the East Coast, to determine what the objectives are and what current policy is regarding join ventures. The debate between harvesters and processors will be put forth as a way of summarizing the costs and benefits of joint ventures to the industry as a whole.

The objective of this study was to determine the feasibility of replacing cationic starch with a synthetic cationic polymer in the emulsification of alkenyl succinic anhydride for use in alkaline sizing.

Three methods of determining the validity of the hypothesis were investigated. The mechanisms encompassed with respect to polymer performance were emulsion stability, retention of ASA, and ASA hydrolysis.

This study investigates the effects of hot supercalendering on sheets with high filler loadings and polypropylene pulp added. An uncoated sheet that had sheet and optical characteristics similar to a coated number three sheet. was desired. Research was conducted in two stages, handsheet analysis and a machine trial on Western Michigan University's Fourdrinier Pilot Plant. The hot supercalendering of these sheets with 15% Pulpex resulted in a 111% increase in Scott Bond. Unconsolidated Pulpex has no synergestic effects with clay fillers for gloss, brightness, and opacity. Pulpex that has been consolidated does have a synergistic effect with clay for gloss.

Clean corrugated board waste was fractionated into its softwood/hardwood fiber components, repulped using a kraft pulping process, and bleached using a CEHD bleaching sequence in an effort to produce high brightness fiber suitable for use in medium to high quality white paper.

The papers produced has almost equivalent mechanical strengths and opacity, but possessed unsatisfactory brightness and cleanliness when compared to commercially manufactured bleached kraft pulps of identical softwood/hardwood contents.

Based on this experimental data, the use of recycled fiber from corrugated board as a fiber substitute in the manufacture of high quality printing and writing papers is not recommended …

This thesis involves a study of the reaction of coating pigment slurries to ultrasonic vibrations during drying on a sheet of paper. The coating was done with a Meyer Rod and immediately transferred to the surface of a loudspeaker apparatus until dry. Several different coating formulations were used and evaluated with and without ultrasonic agitation. These coatings include combinations of #2 clay, delaminated clay, titanium dioxide, calcium carbonate, and polystyrene plastic pigment. Frequencies of 25,000 Hz and 42,000 Hz were used as well as the control group which was not treated. The amplitude was the highest attainable with the frequency …

The effect of feeding, bilateral parotidectomy, pilocarpine treatment, visual and olfactory, and masticatory stimuli on parotid hormone (PH) secretion is reported. Feeding a regular chow was shown to be a potent stimulus for PH secretion. The parotid endocrine system is highly sensitive to the eating stimulus, since a period of feeding lasting 30 sec is enough to cause a significant increase in PH secretion. The parotid glands are the principal source of PH as shown by the marked decrease in basal PH titer, and a virtual absence of response of PH to feeding in parotidectomized pigs. Three groups of the common shiner (Notropis cornutus, Mitchell) were adapted to three different photoperiods. These photoperiods were 16L:8D (summer), 12L:12D (controls), and 8L:16D (winter). The prolactin cells were studied histologically and morphologically with respect to staining characteristics, cell and nuclear morphology, nuclear size, and cellular density. The prolactin cells of those fish under the long photoperiod exhibited greater cellular activity than the controls as evidenced by an increase in nuclear size, cellular density, and by becoming more circular. The prolactin cells of those fish under the short photoperiod exhibited the same characteristics as those in the long photoperiod. The …

Schistosomiasis is a serious disease in humans. Two species of schistosome, Schistosoma mansoni and Schistosoma haematobium, organisms that cause the disease, parasitize humans in Libya. Schistosomes require aquatic snails in their life cycle. The purpose of this study was to investigate the environmental and the host relationships of the disease in the three regions of Libya where the disease is found. These relationships include:

The distribution and proportion of cytoplasm containing immunoreactive neuron specific enolase (NSE) in the rat pineal have been investigated. Step serial sections of the pineal glands of 7 male Sprague-Dawley rats were stained for NSE using an indirect immunoperoxidase method. The volumes of the pineals and of the regions containing reactive cells were derived from the distance between sections and the sum of the corresponding sectional areas of camera lucida drawings. The proportion of the NSE areas actually consisting of NSE reactive cytoplasm was measured using an image array processor.

The occurrence of perinatal deaths, bony extoses, and deafness in dog kennels in certain areas of Michigan led The Upjohn Company and Western Michigan University to suspect fluoride toxicity and/or water born toxins. The present project was designed to examine the ability of excess fluoride ingestion and/or the ability of suspected water born toxins to induce histopathology in Sprague-Dawley rats. Thirty-day old male Wistar rats were fed 1 of 8 purified diets. Three groups were fed diets containing either 12, 20, or 28% casein (protein) ad libitum. Three other groups were fed diets containing 18, 30, or 42% casein with a feed intake restricted to two-thirds of that consumed by the ad libitum groups. In addition, two groups were initially fed diets containing 20% casein, then the casein level was either gradually (0.8%/month) decreased to 12% or increased to 28% by 1 year of age. Lake in the Woods is a woodland hollow pond formed on colluvium at the western end of Cades Cove in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The modern flora of the lake is dominated by Liquidambar styraciflua and includes several species with Coastal Palin affinities--Acer rubrum variety trilobum, Woodwardia virginica, and Helianthus angustifolius. The fine-scale vegetation changes at Lake in the Woods from 6600 BP to present have been studied using the paleoecological analysis of pollen, fungal palynomorphs, and charcoal influx. A radiotelemetry study to determine seasonal movements and habitat utilization of black bears (Ursus americanus) in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park was undertaken from June 1980 to May 1982. Annual home range size in a year of poor hard mast production was 119 km2 and 13 km2 for males and females, respectively, and 36 km2 and 6 km2 in a year of good hard mast production. Bear movements were governed by seasonal food availability. Bears exhibited an affinity to summer home ranges but traveled to widely dispersed fall ranges. Seasonal range shifts were more evident …

The purpose of the study was to compare the MMPI scores of graduating high school seniors and their parents. The Minnesota Multi-phasic Personality Inventory was administered to one hundred and twenty subjects (forty students and eighty parents). The students were enrolled in five public schools and three private schools in Southwest Missouri, Central Missouri and Northeast Oklahoma. The volunteer subjects were selected using random sampling procedures. The data were collected during March and April, 1983.

Two different laboratory streams were.used to examine the life cycles of Hydropsyche bifida and H. morosa (Trichoptera:Hydropsychidae). Effectiveness of the artificial streams was determined. Hydropsyche bifida and H. morosa were shown to be useful bioassay organisms. Variations of the species-specific larval head patterns were drawn for both H. oifida and H. morosa.

Field studies were used to determine niche·separations for H. bifida and H. morosa in riffle areas of the Sauk River, St. Cloud, Minnesota. N,N'-Diphenylguanidine (DPG) is a potentially toxic compound used in the vulcanization of rubber products. Distribution of DPG in hybrid mice (C57BL/6J interbred with DAB2) was determined following intraperitoneal injection. Urine, fecal material, whole blood and tissues were collected at various times after administration of DPG and the extracts analyzed for DPG by high pressure liquid chromatography. Recovery of DPG from spiked urine and whole blood exceed 90%, however, the recovery of DPG from spiked tissue samples was approximately 70%.

DPG concentration in whole blood reached a maximum within ten minutes and rapidly decreased through 180 minutes after administration …

The evaluation of human semen is very important for diagnosis of male infertility. Combined with the analysis of seminal plasma, a comprehensive biochemical screening of human spermatozoan proteins may be of assistance in providing qualitative and quantitative information to the physician to assist with evaluation.

In this study, human spermatozoa were ruptured by sonication. The soluble spermatozoan proteins were separated from the cellular debris by centrifugation and then analyzed in dissociated forms by two dimensional electrophoresis. The separated proteins were visualized by a silver stain method.

The spatial and temporal distribution of phytoplankton was measured in relation to frontal areas located in the entrance to the Chesapeake Bay. Phytoplankton biomass, taxonomy, and several physical parameters were measured on fifteen sampling cruises between September,1981 and February, 1983.

Several statistical tests revealed that phytoplankton biomass did not accumulate at the fronts and that generally the distribution of phytoplankton biomass was homogenous across the frontal region. The cell count data indicated that the community structure of the phytoplankton assemblage was usually very similar on both sides of the front. The significance of sea nettle abundance on lower levels of the Chesapeake Bay food chain was examined in a field study and by the analysis of medusa gut contents. In the field study, the abundance of four levels of the food chain (Chlorophyll (a), copepods, the ctenophore Mnemiopsis leidyi, and the Schyphomedusa Chrysaora guinguecirrha) were monitored twice weekly at four stations from May 10 through September 30, 1982. The copepod standing stock declined sharply in late May when M. leidyi appeared, but rebounded a month later when C. guinguecirrha medusae reduced the ctenophore population. The objective of this study has been to develop an hypothesis explaining comparable aerial and underwater visual acuity of the bottlenose dolphin, Tursiops truncatus. This objective was accomplished by integrating the findings of other dolphin researchers working in the fields of comparative psychology, histology and ophthalmology. Their combined results enabled the formulation of a schematic dolphin eye. It is proposed that a dolphin lens, similar to the spherical lens of teleost fish with a rigid core of uniformly high refractive index and a margin of radially decreasing refractive index, could function as a bifocal lens and compensate for the eye's …

The effects of the presence of the mud snail Ilyanassa obsoleta (Say) upon the benthic community of Broad Bay, Virginia were examined through artificial removal and exclusion of the snail and artificial increase of the snail population. The enclosure treatment exhibited a significantly higher number of macrofaunal individuals than the control. The control had a significantly higher number of meiofaunal individuals than either treatment. There were no significant differences for the chlorophyll a. The increase in macrofauna and corresponding decrease in meiofauna were probably due to cage effects and not snail densities. The presence of the fences can act as …

A study was conducted to determine the potential impact of open ocean disposal of sediments dredged from a highly industrialized seaport. Sediments from three potential dredge sites along the Southern Branch of the Elizabeth River, Hampton Roads, Virginia were evaluated for acute toxicity. The suspended particulate fractions of dredged materials were tested in a series of 96-hour, static bioassays using the calanoid copepod, Acartia tonsa Dana. Significant mortalities were observed for all three sites with the sediments from the most heavily industrialized site producing immediate and severe mortality. In today's economy, more and more papermills are becoming increasingly concerned with white water reuse. White water is most frequently used for fan pump dilution, and consistency regulation. This white water usually comes strictly from the tray boxes of the paper machine. It was suggested that the white water from the press section could be reused. A dose-dependent covalent binding of primaquine to mouse liver microsomal protein was found in both in vitro and in vivo studies. The binding in vitro was linear during the first 90 minutes of incubation and dependent on the concentration of mouse liver microsomal protein. The in vitro covalent binding was markedly enhanced by cofactors. Pretreatment of mice with phenobarbital, a cytochrome P450 inducer, increased the microsomal cytochrome P450 content and the in vitro covalent binding significantly. Binding was markedly inhibited when microsomal metabolism inhibitors (SK&F-525A, metyrapone and piperonyl butoxide), and sulfhydryl-contai ni ng compounds were added to the incubation system. …
