Federal Court Adjudication Of State Prisoner Claims For Post-Conviction Dna Testing: A Bifurcated Approach, Dylan Ruga
Federal Court Adjudication Of State Prisoner Claims For Post-Conviction Dna Testing: A Bifurcated Approach, Dylan Ruga
The University of New Hampshire Law Review
[Excerpt] “Undoubtedly, there are innocent people in prison. Moreover, it is probable that the wrongly convicted, if given a chance to conduct DNA testing on evidence used against them at trial, could establish their innocence. […]
Part II of this Comment will examine the reasoning behind recent circuit court decisions concerning prisoners’ rights to post-conviction genetic testing. I will explain that a bifurcated approach is the appropriate paradigm for reviewing these claims and demonstrate why three of the four circuit courts erred in their analyses. This part also will review the Supreme Court decisions cited by the circuit courts and …

Biotechnology And The Law: A Consideration Of Intellectual Property Rights And Related Social Issues, Michael D. Mehta
The University of New Hampshire Law Review
[Excerpt] “Recent advances in biotechnology are expected by many to improve crop yield, reduce reliance on agricultural inputs like pesticides and herbicides, alleviate world hunger, improve the safety and effectiveness of pharmaceuticals, assist in the discovery of genes that trigger diseases like cancer, and make more efficient our legal institutions through DNA testing. Clearly, innovations in biotechnology are a powerful force for social change, and they pose unique challenges and opportunities for legal scholars and institutions. This section of the Pierce Law Review focuses on the interface between law and technology by examining how innovations in biotechnology accelerate debates about …

The Commons Concept And Intellectual Property Rights Regime: Whither Plant Genetic Resources And Traditional Knowledge?, Chika B. Onwuekwe
The University of New Hampshire Law Review
[Excerpt] "The classification of plant genetic resources (PGRs) as the common heritage of humankind continues to generate controversies. The debate is between developing countries that are the primary sources of these resources and industrialized, biotechnologically advanced countries that appropriate and utilize PGRs as raw materials for various commercial products, such as medicine, seed variety, or pesticides. Scholars of diverse backgrounds express various opinions on whether PGRs obtained from plants found within a territory of a sovereign state should properly be designated “common heritage of humankind” or regarded as part of the “commons,” and therefore freely accessible. The debate also extends …

Characterization Of Legume Starches And Their Noodle Quality, Wen-Chieh Sung, Martha Stone
Journal of Marine Science and Technology
Physicochemical properties of starches isolated from Colorado grown legumes (chick peas, peanut beans, and pinto beans) were studied to find a feasible, less expensive source for making starch noodles. Surfactants, monoglycerides of fatty acids and sodium stearoyl lactylate at 0.5% of starch weight, were also combined with raw starch to prepare starch noodles. Cooking qualities of pinto bean and peanut bean starches were inferior to those of mung bean and/or chick pea starch noodles. Although mung bean starch is used commercially for making starch noodles, functional characteristics and sensory results on chick pea starch noodles show that chick peas are …

Response Of Small Mammal Populations To Fescue Hayfield Conversion To Native Warm Season Grasses In Bath County, Virginia, Michael T. Mengak
Virginia Journal of Science
I investigated the effect on small mammal populations of converting an existing fescue (Festuca arundinacea) hayfield to switchgrass (Panicium virgatum) on the George Washington National Forest at Hidden Valley in Bath County, Virginia. Native warm season grasses are thought to provide better habitat than fescue pastures for Northern Bobwhite (Colinus virginianus) and several species of grassland birds as well as herbivorous small mammals. I established one live-trapping grid and conducted trapping (pre-treatment) in both the switchgrass (treatment) and the fescue (control) field in March and May 1997. The treatment field was sprayed with glyphosate …

Method Analysis Of Laboratory Measures Of Stream Sediment And Water Phosphorus Equilibrium, Anna L. Erickson, Stephanie M. Williamson, Brian E. Haggard
Discovery, The Student Journal of Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences
Elevated phosphorus concentrations in aquatic ecosystems of northwest Arkansas prompted an investigation of the effects of sample preparation and extraction methods on laboratory measures of sediment-phosphorus interactions. Two streams of contrasting phosphorus (P) concentrations were selected to determine the effect of using a CaCl2 solution instead of filtered stream water, refrigerated or dried sediments instead of fresh wet sediments, and vortexing the suspensions instead of shaking them. Sediment equilibrium P concentration (EPC0) and P buffering capacity (K) were used to determine differences in extraction methods. EPC0 and K from extractions using fresh sediments and a CaCl2 solution matching the electrical …

Can Martian Life Exist Under Dry Conditions?, Michael Kendrick
Can Martian Life Exist Under Dry Conditions?, Michael Kendrick
Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal
Recently, we have begun to hear more and more about news coming from Mars. With the recent confirmation of evidence of liquid water in Mars' past, evidence indicating liquid water in Mars' present, and as many missions planned for this decade and the next than have successfully reached the planet in the last 40 years, life on Mars is beginning to become a more relevant issue in our study of the planet. Although there have been no indications of multicellular life on Mars, there may be a possibility of microbial life in the subsurface. Since it appears that all of …
Last Frost Project, Midori Kubozono
Last Frost Project, Midori Kubozono
Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal
For nursery stores and garden shops planning Spring deliveries, it is crucial to be able to predict last frost dates for frost-tolerant and frost-tender plants. This project provides historically reliable information on the seasonal last frost occurrence for U.S. store locations. Stores can use this information as a general guide in making Spring distribution plans but would also need to take the current season’s weather variations and predictions into account. Using geospatial software and an historical weather data set provided by National Climatic Data Center, the probability from 10 percent to 90 percent for days below a specified temperature (i.e., …
