Effects Of Dosages And Application Periods Of Edta On Morphological And Cytogenetic Characters Of Barley (Hordeum Vulgare L.) Seedlings, Ali̇ İrfan İlbaş, Yasemi̇n Eroğlu, Hali̇l Erhan Eroğlu
Turkish Journal of Biology
Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) has many applications in plant research in addition to other applications, such as chelation and medical therapy. The morphological and cytogenetic effects of EDTA on barley seedlings were investigated in the present study. Seeds of Hordeum vulgare L. were treated with different doses of EDTA (30, 60, 90, 120 and 150 mmol/l) and 2 different application periods (20 and 22 h). Except mitotic index, all of the measurements for the investigated characters were carried out on days 7 and 14. EDTA treatments affected germination rates in nearly all treatments. In general, EDTA treatments decreased the root, leaf …
Some Optimal Cultural Parameters For Gibberellic Acid Biosynthesis By Pseudomonas Sp., Şafak Karakoç, Ni̇lüfer Aksöz
Some Optimal Cultural Parameters For Gibberellic Acid Biosynthesis By Pseudomonas Sp., Şafak Karakoç, Ni̇lüfer Aksöz
Turkish Journal of Biology
The current study reports the optimal cultural parameters for GA3 production by Pseudomonas sp. isolated from wastes of processed olive affected by physiological conditions (incubation temperature, pH of the growth media, incubation period, and incubation conditions). The highest level of gibberellic acid (285.06 mg/l) production was obtained in nutrient broth when the bacteria culture was incubated at 30 °C for 72 h at pH 7 on rotary shaker and in the dark.
Nucleic Acid Extraction From Clinical Specimens For Pcr Applications, Ashabil Aygan
Nucleic Acid Extraction From Clinical Specimens For Pcr Applications, Ashabil Aygan
Turkish Journal of Biology
Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) has been widely used due to its high specificity, sensitivity, and rapid turn-around time. However, the major limitation of PCR based diagnosis is inhibition of the reaction caused by a variety of components within clinical specimens. The demand for PCR diagnosis in medical microbiology has highlighted the need for efficient methods of nucleic acid extraction. Although there has been progress in the simplification and purification of microbial nucleic acids, many researchers' procedures are still inconvenient for routine use with any specimen and a universal method has not been devised yet. In this review, some of the …

Rnf Genes In Purple Sulfur Bacterium Allochromatium Vinosum, H. Benan Di̇nçtürk, Volkan Demi̇r
Turkish Journal of Biology
Allochromatium vinosum is a photosynthetic, diazotrophic purple sulfur bacterium that oxidizes reduced sulfur compounds hydrogen sulfide, elemental sulfur and thiosulfide. In this article, we report the presence of rnf genes in Allochromatium vinosum, some of which have been reported to take part in nitrogen fixation in some species.

Antimicrobial Activities Of The Extracts Of Marine Algae From The Coast Of Urla (İzmir, Turkey), İnci̇ Tüney, Bi̇lge Hi̇lal Çadirci, Di̇lek Ünal, Atakan Sukatar
Turkish Journal of Biology
Methanol, acetone, diethyl ether, and ethanol extracts of 11 seaweed species from the coast of Urla were tested in vitro for their antimicrobial activities against Candida sp., Enterococcus faecalis, Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus epidermidis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Escherichia coli with the disc diffusion method. Diethyl ether was the best solution for extracting the effective antimicrobial materials from the algae species used in this experiment, with the exception of D. linearis, for which ethanol was the most effective extraction solution. Diethyl ether extracts of fresh Cystoseira mediterranea, Enteromorpha linza, Ulva rigida, Gracilaria gracilis, and Ectocarpus siliculosus showed effective results against all test …
Antibacterial Activity Of Four Plant Extracts Used In Palestine In Folkloric Medicine Against Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus, Bassam Abu-Shanab, Ghaleb Mohammad Adwan, Naser Jarrar, Awni Abu-Hijleh, Kamel Adwan
Antibacterial Activity Of Four Plant Extracts Used In Palestine In Folkloric Medicine Against Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus, Bassam Abu-Shanab, Ghaleb Mohammad Adwan, Naser Jarrar, Awni Abu-Hijleh, Kamel Adwan
Turkish Journal of Biology
Ethanolic and hot water extracts from 4 different plant species used in Palestine in popular medicine for the treatment of several ailments of microbial and non-microbial origin were evaluated for potential antimicrobial activity against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). Both water and ethanol extracts of Mentha longifolia, Melissa officinalis and Rosa damascena were effective on MRSA. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) values of the ethanolic extract of M. longifolia and M. officinalis were in the range of 3.125 to 12.50 mg/ml and 12.50 to 25.00 mg/ml, respectively. The ethanolic extract with the greatest antimicrobial activity was …
Effectiveness Of The Entomopathogenic Nematodes Heterorhabditis Bacteriophora And Steinernema Feltiae Against Tenebrio Molitor (Yellow Mealworm) Larvae In Different Soil Types At Different Temperatures, Alper Susurluk
Turkish Journal of Biology
The efficiency of the entomopathogenic nematodes Steinernema feltiae Tur-S3 and Heterorhabditis bacteriophora Tur-H2, isolated in Turkey, against larvae of Tenebrio molitor L. was investigated in different soil type and temperature conditions. Sterilized and non-sterilized silver sand, clay-loam soil, and compost soil were tested, each at 12, 18, and 24 ºC. Temperature had the greatest effect on the mortality of T. molitor larvae caused by both nematode species. The efficiency of the 2 nematodes was greater in sterile than in nonsterile conditions, and was greater in sandy soils than in clay soils. The results showed that Steinernema feltiae was more efficient …

Antibacterial Effects Of Nutraceutical Plants Growing In Palestine On Pseudomonas Aeruginosa, Ghaleb Mohammad Adwan, Bassam Abu-Shanab, Kamel Adwan, Farah Abu-Shanab
Turkish Journal of Biology
The antibacterial effects of single and combined plant extracts of water, ethanol and methanol for two nutraceuticals utilized in Palestine were studied against multiple drug resistances Pseudomonas aeruginosa using well diffusion method. These plants are Rhus coriaria and Thymus vulgaris. Combinations of these extracts showed an additive action against this pathogen.
