Factors Influencing Adoption Of Vsh Queens In The Honey Breeding Industry, Julie Leiby Jan 2014

Factors Influencing Adoption Of Vsh Queens In The Honey Breeding Industry, Julie Leiby

LSU Master's Theses

There are many threats that contribute to the decline in honey bee colonies around the United States; among them is the Varroa mite, Varroa destructor. The Varroa mite is a significant threat to honey bees and, by extension, beekeepers across the United States. It is suspected to be one of the main contributors to the increase in colony collapse and the decline in bee numbers and the beekeeping industry (Danka, May 2013). Fifty-five percent of beekeepers exited beekeeping between 1987 and 2002 (USDA). Although honey production continued to decrease through 2007, the number of beekeepers entering beekeeping had increased (USDA). …

Effect Of Tissue Source On Adult Equine Multipotent Stromal Cell Pluripotency Induction Treatment With Synthetic Mrna, Javier Martin Jarazo Jan 2014

Effect Of Tissue Source On Adult Equine Multipotent Stromal Cell Pluripotency Induction Treatment With Synthetic Mrna, Javier Martin Jarazo

LSU Master's Theses

Autogenous and autologous adult multipotent stromal cells are applied to treat equine musculoskeletal injuries in clinical practice. However, options for autologous therapy in the equine specie are restricted due to the limited biological material obtained or MSCs tissue harvest procedure and because of their unpredictable in vivo behavior. Induced pluripotent stem cells represent an alternative to overcome these limitations. Traditionally, iPSCs are produced by introducing DNA for early embryonic genes into cells with viruses. The method tested in this study, avoids the use of viral vectors and potential for exogenous DNA integration into the cell’s genome by utilizing a lipid …

The Control Of Amplitude And Direction In Bimanual Coordination, Zhujun Pan Jan 2014

The Control Of Amplitude And Direction In Bimanual Coordination, Zhujun Pan

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Spatial coordination of bimanual movements is important when performing daily activities. Whereas, older adults and individuals with Parkinson’s disease (PD) commonly show difficulties in temporally coordinating the hands in bimanual coordination tasks, the effects of aging and Parkinson’s disease on the quality of spatial coordination between the hands are unclear. Thus, the present work investigated the impact of older age and PD on the spatial interference in a bimanual task in which 48 right hand-dominant participants (16 young adults, 16 older adults and 16 individuals with PD) drew simultaneously two lines with both hands with varied movement amplitudes (3 and …

Prevalence Of Campylobacter Jejuni In Small-Scale Broiler Operations And The Effects Of Sulfadimethoxine Administered To Control C. Jejuni Infection In Broilers, Wannee Tangkham Jan 2014

Prevalence Of Campylobacter Jejuni In Small-Scale Broiler Operations And The Effects Of Sulfadimethoxine Administered To Control C. Jejuni Infection In Broilers, Wannee Tangkham

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Campylobacter spp. particularly C. jejuni has been recognized as one of the most prevalent causes of foodborne bacterial illnesses in humans. Most previous studies have focused on the transmission routes of C. jejuni from commercial flock farms to the final retail product. To date, no in vivo studies have addressed the efficacy of sulfadimethoxine in the control of C. jejuni in poultry. This dissertation research proceeds along two lines of investigation. The objectives of the first line of investigation are to determine the enumeration of Campylobacter spp. and the prevalence on both Campylobacter spp. and C. jejuni on live egg …

Characterization Of Cry1f Resistance In Fall Armyworm, Spodoptera Frugiperda (J.E. Smith) Obtained From Puerto Rico And Florida, Vikash Dangal Jan 2014

Characterization Of Cry1f Resistance In Fall Armyworm, Spodoptera Frugiperda (J.E. Smith) Obtained From Puerto Rico And Florida, Vikash Dangal

LSU Master's Theses

The fall armyworm (Spodoptera frugiperda (J. E. Smith)) is a major pest targeted by transgenic corn expressing Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) proteins in both North and South America. The objective of this study was to characterize the inheritance and fitness costs of the Cry1F resistance in two fall armyworm populations collected from Puerto Rico (RR-PR) and Florida (RR-FL). To determine the inheritance of the resistance, besides RR-PR, RR-FL, and a Cry1F-susceptible population (Bt-SS), 14 other populations were developed by reciprocal crosses, F1 by F1 crosses, backcrosses, and crosses between RR-PR and RR-FL. Diet-incorporated bioassays were conducted to determine the Cry1F susceptibility …

Can Gravitational Influences Explain Endpoint Precision Between Visual Conditions?, Chelsea Marie Soebbing Jan 2014

Can Gravitational Influences Explain Endpoint Precision Between Visual Conditions?, Chelsea Marie Soebbing

LSU Master's Theses

Reaches to remembered target locations often result in different endpoint precision when compared to reaches to actual (seen) targets. Interestingly, errors are observed whether the reach to the remembered location is performed in an environment with or without allocentric cues (visual cues from the environment) available. People tend to point below remembered target locations in the dark relative to normal room lighting while seated, standing, and reaching with a step. In this study we questioned the effect of gravitational influences on upper extremity reaching and pointing accuracy in dark and illuminated environments. We hypothesized that alterations in body orientation would …
