Nebraska Students In Transition: The Evolution Of A Partnership, Toni Anaya, Charlene Maxey-Harris Jan 2013

Nebraska Students In Transition: The Evolution Of A Partnership, Toni Anaya, Charlene Maxey-Harris

UNL Libraries: Faculty Publications

Since 2010, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) libraries have been collaborating with the Office of Admissions on an innovative program working with high school seniors through the Nebraska College Preparatory Academy (NCPA). Over the past 10 years, Nebraska has been affected by Nebraska's dramatic changes in racial and ethnic diversity. Despite a rapid rise in ethnic diversity over the past 10 years, the state was still 90 percent white at the time of the 2010 census. Over the past decade, UNL has been interested in actively recruiting students and faculty from ethnically diverse backgrounds. This initiative centers on recruitment strategies …

Gendered Narratives Of Innovation Through Competition: Lessons From Science And Technology Studies, Scout Calvert

UNL Libraries: Faculty Publications

Library and information science is a technologically intensive profession with a high percentage of women, unlike computer science and other male-dominated fields. On the occasion of the 2011 Association for Library and Information Science Education (ALISE) conference, this essay analyzes the theme “Competitiveness and Innovation” through a review of social psychology and science and technology studies literature. Both theme concepts have ramifications for library and information science (LIS) education. Librarianship and teaching are both professions that resist commodification because they rely on embodied labor and personal interaction. Competition, as a management or learning style, may not promote meaningful innovation in …

Are Student Affairs Professionals Educators? Student Affairs And The Scope Of The Educational Exemption Of Copyright Law, Dallas Long Dec 2012

Are Student Affairs Professionals Educators? Student Affairs And The Scope Of The Educational Exemption Of Copyright Law, Dallas Long

Dallas Long

Copyright is a critical, emerging issue in American higher education. Copyright restricts how educators use copyrighted materials in teaching activities. Although the fair use doctrine and the educational exemption in U.S. copyright law provide exceptions for educators, student affairs professionals might not meet the standards of the educational exemption. This paper serves as a primer on U.S. copyright law, the fair use doctrine, and the educational exemption. Analyses of case law suggest student affairs professionals should rely on the fair use doctrine rather than the educational exemption when using copyrighted materials for educational purposes.

The Google Online Marketing Challenge And Distributed Learning, Ron T. Brown, Kendra S. Albright Dec 2012

The Google Online Marketing Challenge And Distributed Learning, Ron T. Brown, Kendra S. Albright

Ron T. Brown

Stagnant perceptions continue to persist in the general public regarding the services libraries offer. LIS research suggests an increased need for marketing, yet LIS programs and students may not view marketing as core to the degree. The Google Online Market- ing Challenge (GOMC), a global competition for online marketing, was incorporated into two LIS courses to build skills in project management, industry analysis, marketing, and search engine optimization. A qualitative analysis was conducted to investigate whether they perceived the marketing project as relevant to their courses and degrees. A model was created to represent the factors that had an impact …

In 1902, a new tradition began on the Oregon State Normal School campus: the May Day celebration. Touted as an ardent joyous welcome of springtime and the most anticipated social event on campus‖, the May Day Fete featured a series of events held on a single day early in May, including the winding of the May Pole, an evening dance, costumed drills, sporting events for both men and women, jokes, singing, pageantry, the procession and crowning of the May Day Queen, and the awarding of the trophy in a challenge between the school‘s senior and junior class. May Day extended …

This chapter provides a case study of teaching an Honors Freshman Seminar at Georgia State University. The pedagogical goals for this course were: (1) to push the boundaries of the Association of College & Research Libraries (ACRL) Information Literacy Competency Standards for Higher Education; (2) to engage students in applying critical-theoretical and social-justice frameworks to the course topics via dialogic, problem-posing learning; and (3) to expand and challenge the students’ perceptions of librarianship by elucidating the role librarians play in social justice and democratizing efforts related to information access.

Twelve students consented to content analyses of their assignment texts. The …
