Identifying Graduate Students’ Instructional Strategies And Approaches Towards Teaching Employable Skills, Elizabeth S. Che
Identifying Graduate Students’ Instructional Strategies And Approaches Towards Teaching Employable Skills, Elizabeth S. Che
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
College instruction tends to focus on imparting disciplinary knowledge rather than employable broad-based skills emphasized by undergraduate guidelines. The lack of emphasis on broad-skill development may leave many undergraduate students unprepared for the workforce. Graduate students who are future professoriate, are teaching undergraduate courses with various attitudes and strategies. This dissertation comprises three published studies that used data from two surveys identifying graduate students’ instructional strategies and approaches to teaching employable skills in their courses.
The first study asked whether graduate students teaching undergraduate courses (N = 114; 70.2% women, M age = 30 years) aim to teach employable …

Predictors Of Student Reenrollment And Graduation During The Covid-19 Pandemic: Student Characteristics And Circumstances, David Wutchiett, A. W. Logue
Predictors Of Student Reenrollment And Graduation During The Covid-19 Pandemic: Student Characteristics And Circumstances, David Wutchiett, A. W. Logue
Publications and Research
The COVID-19 pandemic decreased college enrollment and disrupted academic progress, particularly among disadvantaged students and institutions. Just before the start of the pandemic in spring 2020, 31,511 undergraduate students attending colleges of The City University of New York responded to a survey detailing their circumstances. Lasso regression followed by mixed-effects logistic regression modeling were used to identify predictors of (1) fall 2020 reenrollment, (2) associate’s-degree graduation or transfer to a bachelor’s-degree program by associate’s-degree students by fall 2022, and (3) graduation with a bachelor’s-degree by bachelor’s-degree students by fall 2022. Part-time status, food insecurity, gender, and major predicted reenrollment and …

The Case Of Blackness And Disability: Disproportionality In Special Education Identification, Patricia Pfende
The Case Of Blackness And Disability: Disproportionality In Special Education Identification, Patricia Pfende
The Vermont Connection
The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) was initially passed in 1975, making provisions for qualifying students to receive special education. Though the act was meant to address the needs of students with disabilities in Kindergarten to twelve grades (K-12), disparities in special education enrollment for Black students have been well documented in the United States over the last 40 years. Scholars continue to question what is the relationship between low-income students, students of color, and disproportionality. Disproportionality refers to the under and over-representation of a specific group in special education. Drawing from the Critical race theory lance, this paper …
An Evaluation Of Rational Choice Theory In The Criminal Justice System, Jabari Lewis, Troy Terry
An Evaluation Of Rational Choice Theory In The Criminal Justice System, Jabari Lewis, Troy Terry
SACAD: John Heinrichs Scholarly and Creative Activity Days
According to the Rational Choice Theory, people commit crimes after carefully considering the advantages and disadvantages of their choices. The Rational Choice Theory's basic principles include an evaluation of potential benefits and consequences, the consideration of alternative options, and the assumption of self-interest. This poster will provide a brief background of the theory, basic assumptions, shortcomings of this theory, and existing and suggested policy implications in the criminal justice system.
Juvenile Recidivism Rates, Logan Stump, April Terry
Juvenile Recidivism Rates, Logan Stump, April Terry
SACAD: John Heinrichs Scholarly and Creative Activity Days
Juvenile crime peaked in the 1990s and has been on a downward decline since that time. However, youth remain overly represented in various stages of the juvenile and criminal legal systems. This poster outlines known criminogenic and non-criminogenic risk factors that influence juvenile offending. These risk factors have been identified in decades of correctional research and are reflected within many validated risk assessment instruments. The most widely used actuarial risk assessments will be outlined to demonstrate their effectiveness in predicting future offending behavior in youth. Lastly, based on known factors, this poster offers primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention and intervention …
Status Offending To Criminal Legal System Involvement, Ryan Deitering, April Terry
Status Offending To Criminal Legal System Involvement, Ryan Deitering, April Terry
SACAD: John Heinrichs Scholarly and Creative Activity Days
Status offenses are behaviors that are not crimes but are prohibited by the law due to an individual’s status as a minor. If these behaviors were committed by an adult, they would not be deemed illegal. Examples include truancy, running away, and curfew violations. Research shows that girls, especially girls-of-color, are more likely to be adjudicated as status offenders. Status offenses result in youth being involved within the juvenile justice system. Research suggests that this pathway does not end in one’s youth; instead, these youth then enter the criminal legal system as adults. Labeling theory is one theoretical perspective that …
The Relationship Between Parenting Practices And Juvenile Delinquency, Megan E. Bechtold, April Terry
The Relationship Between Parenting Practices And Juvenile Delinquency, Megan E. Bechtold, April Terry
SACAD: John Heinrichs Scholarly and Creative Activity Days
Delinquency may take on many definitions, but the most widely accepted definition is a minor crime committed by a young person, generally under the age of 18. Youth may also deal with legal trouble in response to status offending. These are behaviors that are age-based and would not be charged if committed by an adult. Examples include truancy, running away, drinking alcohol and using tobacco, and being incorrigible. Offending is a term that can be used to describe the actions of adults and youth, with definitions extending beyond just a “minor” crime (e.g., homicides and rapes). Many factors may contribute …
Crossover Youth, Gunner Ebert, April Terry
Crossover Youth, Gunner Ebert, April Terry
SACAD: John Heinrichs Scholarly and Creative Activity Days
Crossover youth is a term used for youth under supervision within both the child welfare system and juvenile justice system. This is also referred to as ”dually involved youth.” Cross-agency communication is lacking for these youth while research shows many youth receive services from both systems. Research shows that crossover youth have longer stays in detention facilities, high rates of recidivism, and poorer long-term outcomes in multiple areas of life (e.g., education and mental health). When referring to crossover youth, intersectionality (e.g., gender and race)—the interconnectedness of social demographics that overlap to form oppression—helps in understanding this dual-system involvement. Additionally, …
Lgbtq+ Youth In The Juvenile Justice System, Matthias B. Pearce, April Terry
Lgbtq+ Youth In The Juvenile Justice System, Matthias B. Pearce, April Terry
SACAD: John Heinrichs Scholarly and Creative Activity Days
Many experts agree that the juvenile justice system has flaws, resulting in the need for different modifications. One area of particular concern within the juvenile justice system is the involvement of LGBTQ+ youth. LGBTQ+ youth are grossly overrepresented in both the juvenile and adult systems, including those who are incarcerated. This rate is highest for queer women and trans, non-binary, and gender non-conforming individuals (Buist, 2020; Donohue et al., 2021; Hereth & Bouris, 2020). This known pathway clearly depicts a systemic issue—one that warrants attention and remediation. This poster provides background information on the disparities that exist for LGBTQ+ youth …

The poster will be talking about mental health in the youths in the juvenile justice system and also the ACEs ( Adverse Childhood Experiences). Also, the trauma and what other forms of abuse and neglect how that might get the juveniles in the system and a slope in where they might gain contact. Also, with the correctional system and implications and suggestions on how to get help for the youths.
School-To-Prison Pipeline, Samuel S. Honas, April Terry
School-To-Prison Pipeline, Samuel S. Honas, April Terry
SACAD: John Heinrichs Scholarly and Creative Activity Days
Kindergarten through grade 12 schools are institutions where youth go to learn, grow, and sculpt their minds for their future. For some youth, schools do not present a warm and welcoming environment, and instead, respond in ways that create negative outcomes for certain youth. Factors like bullying, poor student-to-teacher interactions, and negative parental attachment can cause youth to have problems in school. Minority youth are also more likely to get in trouble in school for the same behaviors as their white counterparts. The school-to-prison pipeline is a pathway that begins in the school system that operates under the notion of …
Use Of Restrictive Housing In The Juvenile Justice System, Caleb D. Purvis, April Terry
Use Of Restrictive Housing In The Juvenile Justice System, Caleb D. Purvis, April Terry
SACAD: John Heinrichs Scholarly and Creative Activity Days
In recent years, the term solitary confinement was replaced with restrictive housing (RH) as it had a less negative tone. However, the terms both represent the same process of isolating individuals in cells with nearly no contact with others. Restrictive housing has many negative effects, including, but not limited to deteriorating mental health and increased rates of recidivism. Such practices are not limited to the adult system as incarcerated youth are also subjected to various forms of restrictive housing (e.g., protective custody, disciplinary and administrative segregation). While those who oppose the use of RH call this cruel and unusual punishment, …
Juvenile Waiver: Problems And Soultions, Daniel Bechle, April Terry
Juvenile Waiver: Problems And Soultions, Daniel Bechle, April Terry
SACAD: John Heinrichs Scholarly and Creative Activity Days
The juvenile waiver was established in 1966 with the landmark case Kent v. United States. This case deemed it constitutional to transfer youth from the juvenile court to the adult criminal court, and significant repercussions have since ensued. One issue includes the notable 3.5% increase in the recidivism rates for youth subjected to the waiver (Augustn, 2017a). The purpose of these waivers was to impose harsher punishments, particularly for serious offenses like murder, and this "tough on crime" approach gained momentum in the 1990s. Presently, public sentiment supports such measures, as evidenced by a survey indicating a majority favoring stricter …
Chippin’ In: An Analysis Of The Criminological Concepts Within Cyberpunk 2077, Morgan J. Steele
Chippin’ In: An Analysis Of The Criminological Concepts Within Cyberpunk 2077, Morgan J. Steele
SACAD: John Heinrichs Scholarly and Creative Activity Days
The cyberpunk genre dominates much of our popular culture, from how we think of cyber- and white-collar crime, to our understanding of how technology influences the criminal justice system. This article explores the common criminological themes prevalent within the recent video game Cyberpunk 2077 as an example of popular criminology. Specifically, it explores the game’s story and environment by examining key characters’ responses to structural inequalities through an anomie theory lens. Key characters and groups within the game exemplify Merton’s (1938) different responses to rampant poverty and socioeconomic inequality. Thus, the game can be used to explore how cultural goals …
The Impact Of State Laws On Officer-Involved Deaths (Oids), Morgan J. Steele, Ziwei Qi
The Impact Of State Laws On Officer-Involved Deaths (Oids), Morgan J. Steele, Ziwei Qi
SACAD: John Heinrichs Scholarly and Creative Activity Days
While the public debates whether law enforcement has a problem with mis- or over-using force, the field lacks critical information concerning how often officers use force in their dealings with citizens. Consequently, the various reforms proposed have little evidence supporting them. Using data from Mapping Police Violence combined with census and LEOKA data, we examine the impact of U.S. Supreme Court jurisprudence and the restrictions that each state placed on law enforcement’s ability to use force and what constituted reasonable force within each state. We found that while the state’s population size and violent crime rate were consistently strong predictors …

Evidence-Based Programs For System-Involved Youths, Karli Baalmann, April Terry
SACAD: John Heinrichs Scholarly and Creative Activity Days
Far too many juveniles are incarcerated in juvenile correctional facilities, and in some cases, waived into the adult criminal legal system. Life course theory helps explain this pathway as many of these youth grow up in poverty-stricken environments, with restricted access and poor quality of schooling, during which they may experience abuse and neglect, leading them into the school-to-prison pipeline. Likewise, youth experiencing Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs)—forms of abuse, neglect, and household dysfunction—endure the additional abuse-to-prison pipeline. Once incarcerated, these youth experience reentry issues when attempting to successfully transition back into their homes and communities. However, this issue starts before …

The Benefits Of Global Experiences For The Undergraduate Student, Patricia K. Adams
PhD in Education
The purpose of this non-experimental quantitative study was to determine the effect global experiences have on undergraduate students’ self-confidence, cultural awareness, and career choice. The research took place at a single research site, a private, faith-based university in the Southeastern United States. Students who had participated in a global experience, such as a mission trip or a study abroad experience, were invited to complete the researcher-created survey, the Global Experience Exit Survey. The data from 59 undergraduate students was analyzed using SPSS, specifically one sample t-tests. The results indicated statistically significant findings for all three subconstructs. The findings show that …

Access To Sexual Assault Care And Exams On College Campuses – A Research-To-Action Project, Brenna Schwien
Access To Sexual Assault Care And Exams On College Campuses – A Research-To-Action Project, Brenna Schwien
SACAD: John Heinrichs Scholarly and Creative Activity Days
Introduction: The rates of unreported sexual assaults on college campuses is astounding. This can be attributed to different factors, some of those including access to a location where they are able to receive a Sexual Assault Kit, transportation to locations that offer that service, and overall lack of education pertaining to the process after sexual assault. It can be seen on campuses that offer these services; students are utilizing the service at higher rates that expected.
Purpose: The aim of this study is to determine how to provide students with sexual assault care on college campuses in hopes to resolve …

Police Officers’ Perceptions Regarding Their Interactions With The Disabled In Kankakee County, Jilliann M. English
Police Officers’ Perceptions Regarding Their Interactions With The Disabled In Kankakee County, Jilliann M. English
ELAIA
Background Previous research shows the rate of crime against people with disabilities is significantly higher than the general population. Despite this, gaps in the training and resources for officers to assist those with disabilities may exist. Eadens et al. (2008) explored this issue by evaluating officer attitudes towards intellectual disabilities. Kankakee County has a significant disabled population, and Illinois is ranked very low in the improvement of related policies, making this a valuable area of interest. Methods This study utilized the modified version of the Social Distance Questionnaire (SDQ) used by Eadens et al. (2008), which is both qualitative and …
