The Prison-To-School Pipeline & The Role Of Private Higher Education In California, Kelly Mills Dec 2016

The Prison-To-School Pipeline & The Role Of Private Higher Education In California, Kelly Mills

Master's Projects and Capstones

Given the realities of mass incarceration in the United States, the disproportionate effects that the criminal justice system has on already marginalized populations-particularly men of color-and our currently very high rates at which the formerly incarcerated return to prisons or jails, it is necessary to determine which programs reduce recidivism and create new opportunities for the formerly incarcerated. As the research has shown that educational opportunities for the currently and formerly incarcerated are successful at reducing recidivism rates, these types of opportunities have become more widely available. By the end of 2016, community college courses will be offered in prisons …

A Trillion-Dollar Question: What Predicts Student Loan Delinquencies?, Alvaro Mezza, Kamila Sommer

Journal of Student Financial Aid

The recent significant increase in student loan delinquencies has generated interest in understanding the key factors predicting the non-performance of these loans. However, despite the large size of the student loan market, existing analyses have been limited by lack of data. This paper studies predictors of student loan delinquencies using a nationally representative panel data set that anonymously combines individual credit bureau records with Federal Pell Grant and federal student loan recipient information, records on college enrollment, graduation and major, and school characteristics. We show that borrower-level credit characteristics are important predictors of student loan delinquencies. In particular, credit scores …

Relationship Between Living Environment And First-Year Student Academic Achievement And Persistence., Shannon Deaton Staten

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Student apartments that are privately owned and managed on the edge of higher education campuses have become a new paradigm in campus housing. Campus administrators consider privatized housing as a financial resource for providing updated housing facilities. There is minimal research regarding how students succeed academically if living in the privatized housing properties. Krause (2007) confirmed that research regarding how students living off campus succeed in college needs to be more fully addressed. This study was designed to contribute information of how students who live in off-campus privatized student housing apartments succeed academically. This information is important to campus administrators …

Academic Performance Of Students With Disabilities In Higher Education: Insights From A Study Of One Catholic College, Laura M. Wasielewski

Journal of Catholic Education

The purpose of this study was to determine if students with disabilities perform comparably to students without disabilities academically at a small liberal arts college. Quantitative results were gathered through the comparison of end of semester and cumulative grade point averages for students with disabilities and students without disabilities (n=56). The t test for independent means and a 2-way analysis of variance were used to test hypotheses. Students without disabilities had significantly higher academic performances than students with disabilities as measured by grade point averages. Female students without disabilities outperformed female students with disabilities as measured by end-of-semester and cumulative …

A campus-wide flipped curriculum model was initiated at a new, private, Catholic university in a large southwestern suburb. The design and development of the curriculum is presented. A formative evaluation was conducted mid-semester to determine the effectiveness of the initiative. Surveys and interviews were conducted with both faculty and students and classroom observations were conducted. Results from the evaluation indicate that students and faculty like the flipped model and that the students have a high level of engagement with the instructional content. Areas for improvement include organization of course materials and the inclusion of pre-recorded lectures. Further training support for …

Faculty Perceptions Of Self-Plagiarism And Other Forms Of Academic Dishonesty Among University Students, Carleen Vincent-Robinson

Carleen V. Robinson

As university faculty are often required to police academic misconduct among students, their attitudes and beliefs toward misconduct warrant investigation, particularly as the failure to act may exacerbate the incidence of students’ unethical behaviors. Therefore, this descriptive study examined faculty perceptions of academic dishonesty among students, institutional support, and self-plagiarism using an electronic-mail questionnaire (N = 201) and assessed the academic environment, frequency of student misconduct, and severity of those behaviors. Female faculty were more likely than male faculty to perceive high levels of cheating on exams (pppppppppp Additionally, online faculty were more likely than campus-based faculty to perceive higher …

Teaching The Library To Students Of Higher Education, Steven Weiland

Charleston Library Conference

The academic library and its digital transformation are ignored in graduate programs of higher education administration, which train a significant number of postsecondary professionals. A course in scholarly communications in the digital age recently introduced at one such program includes an invitation to aspiring administrators to study the contributions of the library to the ways that faculty members are coming to understand and capitalize on new technologies in teaching, research, and career development. The library is represented in the course in its traditional and new roles. It is an essential campus location for attention to what technological change means for …
