Exploring Students’ Epistemological Understanding Of Atomic Structure Models, Claire V. Ward, Morgan Balabanoff
Exploring Students’ Epistemological Understanding Of Atomic Structure Models, Claire V. Ward, Morgan Balabanoff
The Cardinal Edge
Developing a robust understanding of atomic structure and the nature of matter is foundational across chemistry and STEM courses. The development of this concept is challenging because it relies on models to illustrate something not directly observable. Scientific models are important tools used to explain phenomena, particularly phenomena that are not directly observable. In general chemistry, students are typically asked to consider four different models: (1) the particle model, (2) the nuclear model, (3) the Bohr model, and (4) the Quantum model. Each depiction has its own advantages and limitations, where instructors introduce each model to explain specific parts of …
Undergraduate And Graduate Students’ Retrospective Perception Of Flipped Learning In Dietetics Curricula, Rachel L. Vollmer, Teresa Drake
Undergraduate And Graduate Students’ Retrospective Perception Of Flipped Learning In Dietetics Curricula, Rachel L. Vollmer, Teresa Drake
Journal of Dietetic Education
Most studies investigating flipped learning fail to assess how student perceptions of flipped learning may change once the class is complete, and students have a chance to reflect on the experience. Follow-up studies are needed to evaluate the sustainability of the benefits from flipped learning among students and how they feel it prepares them, if at all, for future classes and/or their professional lives. Therefore, the objective of this study was to explore how graduate and undergraduate dietetics students retrospectively perceive a course that used flipped learning 2 years after they completed the course. Two focus groups with undergraduate (n=5) …

Who Participates In The Skilled Technical Workforce After College And What Are Their Educational Pathways?, Xianglei Chen
Journal of Research in Technical Careers
The skilled technical workforce (STW) comprises workers in occupations that require significant science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM) skills but not a bachelor’s degree for entry. The United States had over 17 million STW workers in 2017, and is expected to be short about 3.4 million workers who are qualified for the available STW positions by 2022. Despite the important contribution of the STW to the U.S. economy, the policy discourse on the STEM workforce has largely focused on workers with bachelor’s or graduate degrees, overlooking those without a 4-year degree. Consequently, knowledge about the STW is limited. This paper …

“I Wish I Knew What I Know Now”: Exploring Psychology Undergraduate Students’ Experiences When Learning About Qualitative Research And Caqdas, Neringa Kalpokaite, Ivana Radivojevic
The Qualitative Report
Learning to conduct qualitative research and use computer-assisted qualitative data analysis software (CAQDAS) can be challenging, which is why it may be more effective to introduce the craft of qualitative research to undergraduate students who have the time and space to learn, even make mistakes, and ultimately build a better understanding for their future studies and careers. There are relatively few published studies sharing insights on teaching qualitative research and CAQDAS to undergraduate students. This descriptive qualitative case study explores students’ experiences in a qualitative research course for undergraduate psychology students, with the aim of discerning how feasible learning both …
Q&A: A Career In Christian Higher Education: An Interview, Linda Gray
Q&A: A Career In Christian Higher Education: An Interview, Linda Gray
Journal of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning for Christians in Higher Education
Much has changed in U.S. culture since the 1970s, requiring teachers to adjust their methods of reaching students who are markedly different from their parents’ generation. But through the decades, Christian educators have tried to demonstrate God’s love through caring, patience, knowledge, and commitment, and in a Christian institution, they also seek to bring a Christian worldview to their students. But if some students at Christian universities are not believers nor seekers and when students lack basic biblical knowledge, teachers in Christian institutions must adjust their teaching methods. Online teaching creates even more challenges as students and teachers can see …

Clinical Reasoning On An Assignment: Baccalaureate Nursing Students' Perceptions / Raisonnement Clinique À Partir D’Un Travail Écrit : La Perception D’ Étudiantes Au Baccalauréat En Sciences Infirmières, Karen Oostra, Barbara Astle, Heather Meyerhoff
Quality Advancement in Nursing Education - Avancées en formation infirmière
Baccalaureate nursing students must develop strong clinical reasoning skills to make sound clinical judgments regarding patient care. The purpose of this Interpretive Descriptive qualitative study was to explore how students understand the evolution and application of their own clinical reasoning skills. Eight nursing students were interviewed about their perceptions regarding the use of clinical reasoning skills on a written, patient scenario based assignment. An overarching theme of Over Time emerged along with two themes: Understanding of Clinical Reasoning and Making Sense of the Assignment. Sub-themes were identified as not knowing, knowing, applying knowing and valuing knowing. Students understood their …

How Do Former Undergraduate Mentors Evaluate Their Mentoring Experience 3-Years Post-Mentoring: A Phenomenological Study, Kari L. Nelson, Christine E. Cutucache
The Qualitative Report
This phenomenological study involves a unique, longitudinal assessment of the lived experiences of former undergraduate mentors (n=7) in light of their current experiences (i.e., career or advanced schooling). The objective of a phenomenological study is to engage in in-depth probing of a representative number of participants. Specifically, we followed up with graduates of the Nebraska STEM 4U (NE STEM 4U) intervention 3 years post-program, with the overall goal of describing the mentors’ experiences using the lens of their current experiences. This type of longitudinal perspective of mentoring is greatly lacking in the current literature. At the time of the interviews, …

Journal of Catholic Education
Students participating in sustained community service at an urban Catholic and Marianist university were volunteer informants in this qualitative exploration of the meaning they make of their service experiences. A PhD student research team (nine members) interviewed fourteen undergraduate students (eleven of whom were seniors). Findings were organized as themes constructed within three domains: background, experience, and meaning. Within “background,” students who had prior work in faith-based service before college deepened their meaning of service. Within “experience,” there were social and cultural dynamics of navigating on and off campus life, including the roles students played as well as the challenge …

Which Matters Most? Perceptions Of Family Income Or Parental Education On Academic Achievement, Jennifer Chiu, Jennifer Economos, Craig Markson, Vincent Raicovi, Cheryl Howell, Elsa-Sofia Morote, Albert Inserra
New York Journal of Student Affairs
The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of college students’ perception of family income, parental education levels, and race on academic achievement. Ninety-four second-year college students from a small, liberal arts, college in New York City responded to the survey during the Fall of 2009. Of the respondents, 52 were female and 42 were male. The survey collected demographic data on student perception of family income, parental education levels, and race. Academic achievement was measured by gathering students’ grade point averages. Findings in the research demonstrated that the education-level of the students’ fathers had the greatest impact …

Educating For Complexity In Nursing Practice: A Baccalaureate Curriculum Innovation, Patricia Rosenau, Lorraine Watson, Leianne Vye-Rogers, Martie Dobbs
Quality Advancement in Nursing Education - Avancées en formation infirmière
This expository article describes an overview of salient changes made to a baccalaureate curriculum to meet the ever changing demands of health care, professional nursing practice, and post-secondary education. The innovations were embedded in the tenets of complexity science, mandates of our professional practice, the contextual relevance of the curriculum and the scholarship of integrative learning. The curriculum is present and future oriented, evidence-based and relevant. The curricular structure shifts content and pedagogy from the traditional stance. The planned and integrative semester course design is greater than the sum of its parts; course content is carefully chosen to illustrate the …
