Lessons From The Front: Ngos And The Fight Against Hiv/Aids In South Africa, Brian G. Williams, Eleanor Gouws, Janet Frohlich, Catherine Campbell, Catherine L. Mac Phail
Faculty of Social Sciences - Papers (Archive)
More than a decade after HIV became established in South Africa's general population, the unity of purpose and commitment needed to limit and reverse the spread of infection is still lacking. Social leaders and "celebrities" are, with some notable exceptions such as Judge Edwin Cameron, unwilling to admit they are infected with HIV. The government argues for the importance of taking a broad view of the social contexts of the epidemic by embracing poverty, inequality and the legacy of Apartheid. Some large corporations are considering the consequences of the epidemic, but their attitude to it remains ambivalent. Echoing the history …

Building The Veco Online Community : A Model For Encouraging Novices., Michelle Williams, Janine Bowes.
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
Building online networks and designing network activity is becoming central to how educators and other education-based professionals work, train others and teach students. It is only since 1995 that Internet connectivity in Australia has provided the critical mass and momentum which alters how people work, who they work with and how they learn. Thus the business of helping professional networks develop and become part of the lives of their members is uncharted territory and an area for research and development for educators in all fields. This paper shares the story of the development of an Australian Network for Vocational Education …
Empathy And The Questioning Spirit In Liberal Education: Reports From The Field, Sara Varhus
Empathy And The Questioning Spirit In Liberal Education: Reports From The Field, Sara Varhus
Journal of the National Collegiate Honors Council Online Archive
Current justifications of liberal education usually take one of two tacks: itemizing the applicable skills that students derive from a liberal education, or asserting that it is liberal education that society must look to for the capacity for community or citizenship. The former is an argument probably worth making because it appeals to the preoccupations of students, parents, and employers, but it is the second that reveals the relevance, for our time, of liberal education. Bruce Kimball argues that this latter focus on the virtues instilled by education de-emphasizes rational inquiry and the individual pursuit of truth in what he …

College And University Marketing Strategies: In Search Of A Sense Of Community, Boyd Sherbet
College And University Marketing Strategies: In Search Of A Sense Of Community, Boyd Sherbet
Graduate Research Papers
Many institutions of higher education are undergoing an identity crisis. In years to come, such a crisis may be viewed as a salient force in the historical evolution of American higher education. The 1980s and 1990s eventually may be acknowledged as the era when colleges and universities began to pursue their unique identities in an aggressive way. The purpose of this paper is to review the marketing strategies used by institutions of higher learning to communicate their unique identities and to review the elements essential to building organizations with a sense of community.
