Creating An Engaging And Ecocritical Project Based Curriculum For High School Environmental Science, Hannah Stewart
Creating An Engaging And Ecocritical Project Based Curriculum For High School Environmental Science, Hannah Stewart
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects
The research question that inspired this curriculum project was: How can educators create an engaging and ecocritical project based curriculum for high school environmental science? This curriculum utilizes a project based learning framework, based on A Framework for High Quality Project Based Learning, in order to create an engaging curriculum for students in a high school environmental science class. Additionally, this curriculum incorporates themes of critical ecology. Critical ecology is a way of studying the environment that asks us to consider how our perceptions and attitudes toward the environment can perpetuate the environmental and social injustices we are facing in …
How Can A Non-Personal Interpretive Guide Increase Place Attachment For Visitors, Encourage The Appropriate Development Of Sustainable Community-Based Ecotourism, And Increase Knowledge Of The Desert And Coastal Ecosystems And Migratory Whales Of Baja Mexico?, Mahin Hamilton
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects
Small ecotour companies run whale-watching tours in remote, protected lagoons of Baja California Sur every winter, as gray whales migrate there to mate and give birth to their young. Often, tourists must drive for hours each way to reach the lagoons for their tour. When tourists get to the small villages that are the base camp for whale watching, their only guides are the boat captains, who do not normally speak English (the main language of tourists in the area). A non-personal interpretive guide would bridge the gap of information, so that tourists learn about the ecology, history, and culture …
Using An Ecojustice Education Framework To Address Conservation In The Upstate, Rebecca Bolich-Wade
Using An Ecojustice Education Framework To Address Conservation In The Upstate, Rebecca Bolich-Wade
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects
In an era of complex and overlapping issues, it is critical to evaluate the effectiveness of alternative interdisciplinary methodology within the fields of justice and environmental conservation. One such method is encapsulated in an ecojustice education framework. This capstone project sought to analyze the effectiveness of an ecojustice education framework to address conservation in the Upstate of South Carolina. In the process of this study’s literature review, it is evident that isolating social justice from environmental conservation is ineffective and unresponsive to the needs that historically underserved communities today face in terms of the mitigation of environmental burdens and enhancement …
Systems Thinking Teaching Strategies Using The Un Sustainable Development Goals To Help Best Prepare Students To Be Future Ready, Elizabeth Hickey
Systems Thinking Teaching Strategies Using The Un Sustainable Development Goals To Help Best Prepare Students To Be Future Ready, Elizabeth Hickey
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects
The United Nations has outlined seventeen sustainable development goals that high school students will have to tackle to have a sustainable future. Schools must take meaningful action in teaching their students systems thinking strategies to best prepare them to be empathic, self-aware, innovative, resilient communicators that are equipped to be sustainable global citizens. This capstone project takes ninth grade students through a student-choice inquiry project to tackle the challenges of how their school’s sustainable initiatives can become more sustainable in order to answer the question, How can I best integrate the United Nation Sustainable Development Goals into my Understanding By …
Using System Thinking Protocols To Improve Student Analytical Thinking And Foster Engagement In Rural Commons, Kristin Guin-Grosse
Using System Thinking Protocols To Improve Student Analytical Thinking And Foster Engagement In Rural Commons, Kristin Guin-Grosse
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects
In an effort to remain rooted in the intersection of rural education and community engagement, this study endeavors to answer the question, how can systems thinking be applied through community engagement pedagogy to improve student higher-order thinking and foster student self-efficacy in their contribution to rural commons? Systems thinking strategies can contribute to student self-efficacy and improve analytical thinking. Engagement education draws upon disparate instructional methodologies and offers an integrated perspective for curriculum development that is place-based, project-focused, civic-minded, and service-oriented. Systems thinking is a tool for developing higher-order thinking that can enhance the rigor of student learning. During the …

How Can We Use The Lake Superior Watershed To Connect To Anishinaabe Youth And Inspire Them To Continue As Stewards Of The Land?, Heidi Lynn Ojibway
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects
Anishinaabe youth have historically experienced difficulty adjusting to mainstream education. Their graduation rates are the lowest in the country (Camera, 2015). By developing curriculum that is culturally relevant and rebuilds connections to the land educators can work towards closing the education gap. The curriculum in this capstone project uses the Lake Superior Watershed, environmental education practices, and American Indian Learner Outcomes to meet state standards. By using culturally relevant materials to connect to Anishinaabe youth it is expected that they will feel invested in the curriculum. They will build stronger community ties which in turn results in stewardship. The curriculum …

Nature Experiences And Ecoliteracy: The Effect Of PlaceBased Education Experiences, Adventure And Outdoor Education Experiences And Undirected Nature Experiences On EcoLiteracy, Beth Anne Moonstone
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Theses and Dissertations
The question addressed in this project was: How do placebased education experiences, adventure and outdoor education experiences, and undirected time in nature impact ecoliteracy? The first part of this study used the Connected to Nature Scale (CNS) developed by Frantz and Mayer (2004) to determine whether a participant self reported as ecoliterate. The CNS is one of the most widely used tools for measuring a connection to nature in relation to ecoliterate behavior. The second step of the study used quantitative survey questions to evaluate participants on placebased education, adventure and outdoor education and undirected time in nature. The third …
