Reading Objectives In The Junior High School, Loretto J. Clarke
Reading Objectives In The Junior High School, Loretto J. Clarke
Bachelors’ Theses
Reading has been recognized as one of the vital organs of education since the days of "the three R's." As a tool it has thrived in spite of poor teaching; but reading as an art has been reserved for the favored few. During the past decade or two, great strides have been made, together with faltering steps, toward new and greater goals. Bigger and broader aims have, in the entire educational scheme, roused educators to study reading methods and endeavor to bring this vitally important subject under the x-ray to discover just what are the needs of the modern reading …

Technique Of Instruction And Comparative Results For Classes Of One Hundred In Mathematics, Clifford E. Trueblood
Graduate Thesis Collection
The purpose in this thesis is to present the technique established in teaching classes of one hundred (80-120) in mathematics and to compare the student progress with the progress made by those in small classes of the entire department. In this study the pupils have not been assigned, either to the large class (100) or the small classes (35), in any special way. In every instance, the assignment to classes has been to suit the pupil's program or the programs of the school. In other words, there has been no attempt to assign special pupils to special classes for the …

An Introductory Course In The Reading Of Simple Graphic And Statistical Material For Use In Junior High Schools, Annie Mckenzie
An Introductory Course In The Reading Of Simple Graphic And Statistical Material For Use In Junior High Schools, Annie Mckenzie
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
In the stories of olden times and in those of our own American Indians, we learned of the picture writing of primitive peoples. It became an early method of recording people's thoughts. This was a very useful method at a time when the race was young. This in turn was the beginning of our alphabet, later the beginning of shaping letters into words, and then word into sentences and paragraphs. As our world has grown older, new idea have come into use and we are no longer content to live as our grandparents lived. We travel by fast express trains, …
Truancy As A Factor In The Delinquency Of Boys : A Case-Study Of 300 Boys In The Preston School Of Industry At Ione, California, And Comparisons With The Truancy Problem Of The Sacramento City Schools, V. Pierpont Husband
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
The study of a question such as that of Truancy must be undertaken on the basis of statistics. It is essentially a matter of investigating and gathering data upon individual cases.
The preliminary search for material upon the subject revealed the fact that practically nothing had been written upon it and apparently little inquiry made into the problem. Accordingly, the writer obtained permission from Superintendent O.H. Close of the Preston School of Industry located at Ione, Amador County, California to conduct an investigation of this problem among the delinquent boys committed to that institution. This school is the state correctional …

This education must be one that will truly equip men and women with knowledge, inspiration, and power necessary to build new institutions, and …

The Creative Writing Of Poetry In The California Secondary Schools, Wesley Mills Pugh
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
Creation was once a prerogative of the gods. For ages the magic word "genius" served as a harrier to isolate from the common man that one in whom burned the spark of constructive originality. In the past we have never considered the possibility of his being one of the teeming throng who Invade our classrooms daily; or having given way to such an absurdity, we have hastily dismissed the Idea, feeling that, if he were, his presence would surely be announced by the choir invisible or some other divine agency.
Of recent years we have experienced a change of opinion. …

The Teaching Of Reading Affords One Of The Greatest Opportunities For The Development Of Character In The Junior High School, Dolores 0. Johnson
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation
Ability to read well is the most important ability that can be developed in the elementary school. Reading, properly mastered, not only renders excellent service throughout life but it greatly reduces the time and effort required to master the other school subjects. The elementary school, then, should strive to develop in each child the ability to read well. If it does this, it has succeeded in its most important work.
