United States Organization Working To Strengthen School Leadership Preparation, Jenny Tripses, John Hunt, Sandra Watkins

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal

We have come into a time where there is of scarcity of resources, where colleges and universities are being pulled in different directions by many of its constituents, and state politicians are jockeying for which policies that they want to implement with limited or no resources to support them, which makes the support for higher education even more scant. If there was not a more urgent time to have a different mindset to transform a college or university this decade, then there likely will not be one. Knowing the obstacles in which higher education institutions need to overcome, the leadership …

The Impact Of Coaching On The Leadership Practicum Process, Marie Yager, John Baker, Phillip Coleman Jan 2011

The Impact Of Coaching On The Leadership Practicum Process, Marie Yager, John Baker, Phillip Coleman

Journal of Business & Leadership: Research, Practice, and Teaching (2005-2012)

A challenge exists to fully utilize practicum experiential learning due to the nature of a practicum and lack of adequate supervision and guided reflection. Students engaged in leadership practicums apply theoretical concepts and models while advancing their personal leadership. Often, students could obtain a more thorough learning experience if guided by a coach who asks critical questions and creates a venue for more in-depth self-reflecting. This paper discusses the impact coaching has on undergraduate leadership practicums and the benefits students can gain from the guidance provided by leadership coaches. A practical application provided a means to qualitatively evaluate the benefits …

Teaching Ethics: Expanding Ethical Perspectives By Cultivating Moral Imagination, Adrian B. Popa, Barbra Kingsley Jan 2011

Teaching Ethics: Expanding Ethical Perspectives By Cultivating Moral Imagination, Adrian B. Popa, Barbra Kingsley

Journal of Business & Leadership: Research, Practice, and Teaching (2005-2012)

Moral imagination (MI) is described as the ability to challenge operative worldviews in order to discover new ways of framing ethical problems and moral perspective taking. Because operative worldviews can contain implicit bias, MI helps individuals reach beyond their own "ways of knowing" to seek alternative perspectives and find innovative ways to solve ethical problems. This article describes a graduate level ethics curriculum designed to develop moral imagination in leadership students, and ultimately help them make ethical decisions within the context of their organizations. The article also reports results of a concurrent, evaluative qualitative study designed to gather student reflections …

The Perceived Impact Of Geographically Dispersed Work Teams On Job Attitudes, Nathan Hickman, Adrian B. Popa Jan 2011

The Perceived Impact Of Geographically Dispersed Work Teams On Job Attitudes, Nathan Hickman, Adrian B. Popa

Journal of Business & Leadership: Research, Practice, and Teaching (2005-2012)

With the increase in technology and pace of communication in a global business economy, organizations are adopting geographically dispersed business models that leverage a series of scaled work arrangements designed to enhance efficiency and cost-effectiveness. These arrangements include work teams that consist of agents who work in a traditional office but also employees who work from a home or satellite office. This qualitative study investigated perceived impact of geographic proximity to the office on job attitudes. Communication theory informed the framework of this ethnographic study and qualitative interviews. Results indicated that members of a dispersed team adopt a broad definition …

Differences In Management And Marketing Professors' Perspectives On The Rising Cost Of College Textbooks, Lawrence S. Silver, Robert E. Stevens, Kenneth E. Clow, Kitty Campbell

Journal of Business & Leadership: Research, Practice, and Teaching (2005-2012)

Textbooks are an integral component of the higher education process. However, a great deal of concern about the high costs of college textbooks has been expressed by those inside and outside of higher education. This paper focuses on the results of a study of the differences in Management and Marketing professors' criteria and use of textbooks and their reactions to some of the changes that have been implemented or may be implemented by universities, state legislatures, and publishers to combat these cost escalations. Findings suggest that management and marketing instructors, particularly those with years of experience, acknowledge the concerns their …

Assessment Practices In English Language At The Nigerian Secondary School Level: A Psycholinguistic Issue, Oluwole Akinbode, Anthony Dairo Jan 2011

Assessment Practices In English Language At The Nigerian Secondary School Level: A Psycholinguistic Issue, Oluwole Akinbode, Anthony Dairo

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal

The major purposes to which the results of assessment could be put were diagnosis, evaluation, guidance, grading prediction, and selection. In Nigeria, it is unfortunate that the results of many examinations have been used almost exclusively for grading and promotion exercises and inevitably there has been a neglect of diagnosis, guidance and evaluation although considerable informal use of assessment for these purposes are made by teachers in the classroom.

Breaching The “Cultural Contract:” Committing To Cultural Sensitivity And Cultural Inclusion For Native American College Students, Kristen Emery Jan 2011

Breaching The “Cultural Contract:” Committing To Cultural Sensitivity And Cultural Inclusion For Native American College Students, Kristen Emery

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal

A culturally responsive, respectful, and inclusive academic environment is a must for Native American students. Educational institutions must work to accommodate and allow Native American cultural traditions to become an integral part of the classroom, of teaching and learning procedures and processes, and of the student experience in general (Burk, 2007). At the colleges and universities of today, Native American students often face challenges beyond that of students from the dominant, typically White, non-Hispanic culture; these challenges are reflected in low retention and college dropout rates of Native American and Alaskan Native students nationwide (Campbell, 2007). Research has indicated that …

Determining Factors Of Transfer: Their Implications For Teaching To Foster Generalisation And Conceptual Restructuring, Stephen Ntim Jan 2011

Determining Factors Of Transfer: Their Implications For Teaching To Foster Generalisation And Conceptual Restructuring, Stephen Ntim

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal

Transfer can be defined as ‘the degree to which behaviour will be repeated in a new situation’ (Detterman and Sternberg, 1993, p. 4). Thus transfer of learning occurs when learning in one context or with one set of materials impacts on performance in another context or with related material. Pennington and Rehder (1995) borrowing from Larkin (1989) also define transfer as the use of knowledge or skill acquired in one situation in the performance of a new, novel task, a task sufficiently novel that it involves additional learning as well as the use of old knowledge. Research evidence as to …

Supporting The Continuing Professional Development Of Teachers In Sub-Saharan Africa: An Integrated Teacher Education Model, Cosmas Cobbold, Albert Dare

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal

Periodically, school operations come under intense review as we take inventory of what has worked and what improvements still need to be made. In fact we label time periods by major events and trends, e.g. back-to-basics (Smith, 1978). As we move into the second decade of a new millennium, we are reflecting and projecting to see where we have been and where we need to be going. We are asking what we have learned and what needs to occur to improve education and our country. The importance of teachers and teacher leadership in education is gaining attention (York-Barr & Duke, …

Action Research In Teacher Education: Classroom Inquiry, Reflection, And Data-Driven Decision Making, Carrie Eunyoung Hong, Salika Lawrence

Journal of Inquiry and Action in Education

One of the growing interests in teacher education lies in how and what teachers learn across time and space in the complex ecologies and technologies of today’s society. Teacher research has been implemented in teacher education programs as a powerful, exploratory tool for teacher candidates to inquire about educational problems and to improve their knowledge of teaching practice. This article presents insights gained from review of 18 action research projects completed by classroom teachers enrolled in a graduate reading methods course. To better understand what teachers learned through the action research process and how their self-study impacted teaching and learning …

Journal of Inquiry and Action in Education

This article reports findings from a study of the motivations of college students to choose or not choose a career as a K-12 teacher. Five hundred-seventeen college students majoring in education and non-education programs enrolled in undergraduate courses were surveyed as to their motivations for choosing/not choosing a career in K-12. If they chose teaching as a career, they were also asked what might motivate others to enter the teaching profession or if they chose a non-teaching career, they were asked what things that if changed might increase their interest in becoming a teacher. Those choosing teaching as a career …

An Historical Analysis Of Character Education, Michael Watz Jan 2011

An Historical Analysis Of Character Education, Michael Watz

Journal of Inquiry and Action in Education

What is termed character education in today’s world has been called many things throughout the history of education in this country. Character education has been both a formal and informal part of schools. At times it has been integrated in small ways into many other pieces of the curriculum. At other times it has been a unique piece of the curriculum as highlighted by the variety of standalone character education programs that are currently running in schools today. Much of character education in the United States can be closely tied in its roots to the education of character in Europe, …

Letter From The Editor, Christina Belcher

International Christian Community of Teacher Educators Journal

Welcome to the summer issue of the ICCTE Journal. Recently, your ICCTE Leadership Council met at Azusa Pacific University in preparation for the 2012 Biennial Conference. While there, we contemplated what it meant to implement ’emphatic listening’, as expressed in the book Messengers of God: The sensuous side of spirituality by Arthur Roberts as an act of worship to God and out of respect to each other. In this beneficial devotional within community, we were able to fellowship, plan, eat and laugh as a team who would return with something to share with you all. I invite you to send …

Transforming Teaching In Inclusive Settings: An Educator Looks At Vim, Robin Labarbera Ph.D. Jan 2011

Transforming Teaching In Inclusive Settings: An Educator Looks At Vim, Robin Labarbera Ph.D.

International Christian Community of Teacher Educators Journal

Inclusive classrooms are those in which students with special needs are educated alongside their non-disabled peers. This article examines the attitudes that teachers in inclusive settings may hold that are believed to be barriers to successful inclusion. Given that historically, students with special needs in inclusive classrooms have made limited academic progress through traditional whole-class instruction, it is suggested that a transformation in inclusive teaching take place. This article suggests that educators apply Dallas Willard’s (2002) concept of VIM, outlined in his book, Renovation of the Heart. Christian teachers may find the vision, intention, and means Willard advocates to be …

High-Stakes Assessment: Is A Christian Ethic Of Care Possible?, Paul Shotsberger Ph.D.

International Christian Community of Teacher Educators Journal

The No Child Left Behind Act, the 2002 reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA), has fundamentally changed the landscape of education in the United States. Amidst the current debate over reauthorization of ESEA, it is vital that Christian educators consider the moral implications of continuing and expanding current policies, especially as they relate to high-stakes assessment and its impact on students and teachers. The focus of the article is the challenge a high-stakes environment poses for educators who truly desire to demonstrate a Christian ethic of care in their teaching and what Christian teacher education can do …

“Is It Because I’M Black?”: Creating Space For Diversity In The Christian University, Mary Ashun Ph.D., Steve Sider Ph.D. Jan 2011

“Is It Because I’M Black?”: Creating Space For Diversity In The Christian University, Mary Ashun Ph.D., Steve Sider Ph.D.

International Christian Community of Teacher Educators Journal

This paper examines the experiences of a black female faculty member as she enters the Christian university where there is limited ethnic diversity. She experiences critical student responses to her teaching which lead her to consider the reasons why she may be experiencing such resistance. As she confronts the possibility that it’s because she’s black, she enters into an on-going dialogue with a white male faculty member. Their experiences and conversations create a space for shared learning. The paper raises the question of how Christian universities might intentionally create space for faculty of color to feel welcome and embraced in …

Gender Differences In Student Engagement Among Emerging Adults Attending A Small Faith-Based University, Melvin P. Shuster Jan 2011

Gender Differences In Student Engagement Among Emerging Adults Attending A Small Faith-Based University, Melvin P. Shuster

Growth: The Journal of the Association for Christians in Student Development

The single best predictor of the success of university sponsored student development activities is the degree to which the students are engaged in these activities (Kuh, 2007). Sax (2008) observes though that much of our understanding of the impact of the college experience is based on the study of students in the aggregate, with relatively little work done on how the college environment differentially influences men and women. The present work investigated gender differences among Emerging Adults (ages 18- 29) (Arnett, 2000) in their engagement of university sponsored activities at a small faith based university located in Northern California. The …
