Applying Maslow's Hierarchy To The Parent/Teacher Relationship, Deanna L. Keith Dr., Lucinda S, Spaulding Nov 2011

Applying Maslow's Hierarchy To The Parent/Teacher Relationship, Deanna L. Keith Dr., Lucinda S, Spaulding

Faculty Publications and Presentations

We examine the parent/teacher relationship through Maslow’s (1943) Hierarchy of Needs, which theorizes that physiological and safety needs must be met before someone feels a sense of belonging, and that sense of belonging and esteem are needed for self-actualization (reaching one’s full potential). We discuss ways to meet the basic needs of parents with the purpose of fostering positive collaborative partnerships between parents and special education teachers.

McCormick Center for Early Childhood Leadership Publications

Mentoring and coaching are well established professional development strategies. These relationship-based strategies are often used in conjunction with traditional instructional practices. Most research in this area, however, has focused on the use of mentoring or coaching with teachers to improve teaching practices. This evaluation study conducted for the Ontario Government was designed to determine the extent to which the Mentoring Pairs for Child Care Project achieved its primary goal of enhancing quality in early learning programs in Ontario, Canada by increasing the administrative knowledge and skills of center directors (supervisors).

Mobile Modeling: Using And Creating Ipad And Ipod Apps To Shape Students With Disabilities, Amanda J. Rockinson-Szapkiw, Justin M. Tucker, Carolyn Wicks Nov 2011

Mobile Modeling: Using And Creating Ipad And Ipod Apps To Shape Students With Disabilities, Amanda J. Rockinson-Szapkiw, Justin M. Tucker, Carolyn Wicks

Amanda J. Rockinson-Szapkiw

Modeling is a technique that is often used to teach new skills to students with disabilities. Modeling is effective for teaching communication, social, and functional living skills to students with emotional, behavioral, and cognitive disorders (Werts, Caldwell, & Wolery, 1996). Video modeling and audio prompts can be as effective as live modeling (Murzynski & Bourret, 2007; Rehfeldt, Dahman, Young, Cherry, & Davis, 2003). In fact, some researchers have suggested that video modeling results in more rapid acquisition of skills than live modeling and may even be more generalizable across environments (Charlop & Milstein ,1989). With the introduction of mobile devises, …

Niños Cultural Y Lingüisticamente Diversos: Apuntes De Una Experiencia Docente, Claudia Peralta Nash

Literacy, Language, and Culture Faculty Publications and Presentations

Assessment Of Personality Factors (Behavioral Motivators) & Attitudes Toward Group Experiences, Dr. Christine Perakslis, Stacey L. Kite Nov 2011

Assessment Of Personality Factors (Behavioral Motivators) & Attitudes Toward Group Experiences, Dr. Christine Perakslis, Stacey L. Kite

Technology

The freshman experience typically requires a profusion of challenging adjustments relating to a new and demanding college environment. One significant force of attrition is transition or adjustment difficulties for freshmen. Successfully influencing freshmen includes efforts that focus on helping students make an academic, personal, and social adjustment to college. Group work provides opportunities for patterns of interaction (Evans, Forney, & Guido-DiBrito, 1998; Tinto, 2005; Upcraft, Gardner, & Associates, 1989).

It is believed that there is intensity in temporary group environments due to a need for individuals to quickly evaluate and adjust to other members, with speed and accomplishment as driving …

The Effects Of Social Media On College Students, Qingya Wang, Wei Chen, Yu Liang

MBA Student Scholarship

As social media sites continue to grow in popularity, it is our premise that technology is a vital part in today’s student success equation. This descriptive, exploratory research study drew a random sample (N=48) of males (n=26) and females (n=22) who were administered a student perception questionnaire on how social media affects college students. Thirty-five percent of the participants were undergraduates and 65% were graduate students, studying at Johnson & Wales University. Thirty-one percent of participants have full-time jobs, 30% have part-time jobs and 39% do not have jobs. The results of the survey questionnaire indicate that 45% of the …

Leading Learning In Education And Philanthrophy : 2011 Survey Report, Michelle Anderson, Emma Curtin

Leading Learning in Education and Philanthropy (LLEAP)

The findings of the first national survey on philanthropy in education have confirmed that when it comes to grant seeking, those least equipped can often be the ones most in need, with nine out of ten Australian schools surveyed considering themselves novices at philanthropic grant seeking. The three-year Leading Learning in Education and Philanthropy (LLEAP) project seeks to explore whether the full potential of funding and partnerships across the philanthropic and education sectors is being achieved. The 2011 Survey Report, released in November, uses the responses of 302 schools, not-for-profits, philanthropic foundations and trusts to help form a clearer picture …

Indigenous Education Research

This review outlines some of the themes that have emerged in the growing global discourse of Indigenous education in the higher education sector.
