Cross-Age Tutoring, Joan P. Mcgovern

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

As stated before, it appears that the sixth grade students at San Jose Catholic School would benefit from reading skills practice that would give them the opportunity to become more involved in the learning process. This project is designed to implement cross-age tutoring at San Jose Catholic School with an entire sixth grade class tutoring a second grade class in reading. The goal of the project is to improve the attitude toward reading of the sixth graders. Attitudes before and after tutoring will be rated on a slightly modified version of the Estes Attitude Scale. It is expected, though it …

An Integrated Listening Skills Program For The Kindergarten Class, Bonita Duggan Diamond Jan 1979

An Integrated Listening Skills Program For The Kindergarten Class, Bonita Duggan Diamond

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This study will attempt to develop a Listening Skills Curriculum in the areas of auditory discrimination, auditory sequencing ability, and grammatic completion for the purpose of improving auditory comprehension. These three skills are components of auditory comprehension. Auditory discrimination and auditory sequencing ability have been chosen as two skills to develop in this program because past research indicates that improvement in these skills does correlate with improvement in auditory comprehension. Grammatic completion is a modified form of auditory closure in which the student completes the sentence with the grammatically preferred inflectional ending. It is expected that exercises in this skill …

A Preschool Needs Assessment Research Project, Lynn A. Good Jan 1979

A Preschool Needs Assessment Research Project, Lynn A. Good

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This needs assessment research project concerns itself with the lack of parental involvement in preschool programs. The lack of communication between educators and parents is examined in relation to its effects on the child and the community. One possible way to begin to solve this problem is presented through the use of a survey questionnaire for parents and teachers concerning what each group feels are the primary considerations, or needs, for quality preschool educational programs.

The considerations surveyed resulted from an in depth review of the literature pertaining to major early childhood concerns. This research examined five areas of review; …

Teaching Map Concepts To Poor Readers, Cynthia J. Meadows Jan 1979

Teaching Map Concepts To Poor Readers, Cynthia J. Meadows

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

There is a concern that children with poor, i.e., below grade level reading ability, have trouble in content area subjects. The subjects of social studies, science, and health are often taught in the elementary grades through the use of textbooks. Because these texts prior to 1979 were written with a readability level at or above the grade level for which the book was designed, the poorer reader cannot read, and therefore learn, the subject matter presented.

Children need knowledge of these content areas to function in today's society. They also need the ability to read to increase their knowledge and …

A Comparative Study Of Student Perceptions And Teacher Perceptions Of Classroom Practices In Advanced Ninth-Grade Biology, Evelyn C. Hart

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

It would appear that examination of student and teacher perceptions of classroom practices might provide information useful in explaining the descrepancies among what teachers think they are doing and what the students see them doing, the achievement and attainment levels of the student, and the application of process oriented science and traditional textbook science. Therefore, the purpose of this project was to determine if a discrepancy exist between student and teacher perceptions of classroom practices in Duval County junior high schools. Specifically, this project attempted to answer the question: Do the perceptions of Advanced Ninth-Grade Biology students in Duval County …

A Curriculum Unit To Provide Enrichment Activities For Talented Students In Biology, Mary Angela Gibson Morrissey Jan 1978

A Curriculum Unit To Provide Enrichment Activities For Talented Students In Biology, Mary Angela Gibson Morrissey

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

It is suggested in this paper that Mastery Learning Units can be successful in encouraging the talented students to excel in their interests and capabilities. The intent of this paper is to show how enrichment activities and centers can be easily implemented in the biology curriculum by the use of Mastery Learning Units. In so doing, only one mastery unit is included for the purpose of demonstration. It is suggested that teachers write the units that they will be using for their students. This would allow their units to fit their own particular objectives, as well as the needs and …

Content Analysis Of The Florida State Assessment Test And The Duval County Essential Skills Test, Carol V. Slack Jan 1978

Content Analysis Of The Florida State Assessment Test And The Duval County Essential Skills Test, Carol V. Slack

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

As stated before, both the Florida State Assessment Test and the EST measure the achievement of students on minimal objectives in the areas of communications and mathematics. One might therefore ask the question, “Why is there a need to administer both tests?”

It would seem that both tests evaluate similar subject areas. This study is designed to explore this similarity of test items. Its purpose is to examine the relationship between the tests in terms of the test items. It is assumed that if there is a high degree of semblance between test items, there may not be a need …

Construction, Administration, And Validation Of A Test Of Oral Language Usage, Ronald Harrison Jan 1978

Construction, Administration, And Validation Of A Test Of Oral Language Usage, Ronald Harrison

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

We as teacher of English are faced with the task of preparing students for the world they will meet when they leave the classroom—a world that will judge them in part by their ability to manipulate the language to their advantage. And yet to measure the use of language, we rely almost exclusively on written measurements. It seems likely that students may easily learn to give the teacher the answer he wants on written tests of English usage. Oral tests are commercially available, but many are prohibitively expensive; others require hours of instruction before the teacher can consider himself qualified …

The Development And Implementation Of Units Of Nonverbal Instruction Which Increase Teachers' Nonverbal Behaviors, Malinda Garcia Jan 1978

The Development And Implementation Of Units Of Nonverbal Instruction Which Increase Teachers' Nonverbal Behaviors, Malinda Garcia

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Nonverbal communication was not considered a science until 1950, after Ray Birdwhistell conducted extensive nonverbal research. Thus, the research on nonverbal communication in the classroom is still in it's pioneer stage. The purpose of this project was to increase kindergarten teachers’ awareness of nonverbal communication and its effect upon students. This pilot study emphasized four specific nonverbal behaviors: eye contact, touch, smile and proxemics. Research has found these behaviors to be true indicators of one's psychological state at the given time. It was believed that by increasing a teacher's nonverbal behaviors he could change students' immediate responses toward school.

Causes Of Low Enrollment Of Black Students In Upper-Level Science Courses, Henry L. Jenkins Jan 1977

Causes Of Low Enrollment Of Black Students In Upper-Level Science Courses, Henry L. Jenkins

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

For approximately seven years, the number of Black students enrolled in upper-level science courses (e.g., Chemistry, Human Physiology, Physics) is proportionately lower than the number of non-Black students a.t Palatka South High School, Palatka, Florida.

On the surface, this low enrollment appears to coincide with the fact that there are more non-Black students than Black students enrolled in the school. However, if one were to examine closely the total number of Black students enrolled in upperlevel science courses from the school's total Black student population enrolled in science classes, and compare it to the school's total non-Black population enrolled in …

A Language Facility Analysis To Determine The Influence Of Black Non-Standard English On Oral And Written Language, Susan R. Gallagher Jan 1977

A Language Facility Analysis To Determine The Influence Of Black Non-Standard English On Oral And Written Language, Susan R. Gallagher

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

It is considered by many linguists that all Americans speak an "astandard" English dialect. Field workers have for decades been involved in the task of interviewing people to determine regional dialects, the conclusion being that each dialect is a bona fide language system." However, an important point is that although there is a great diversity in oral language, there is only one accepted written form. (syntax and spelling). One of the most prominent of these divergent patterns is the Black non-Standard (BNS) language with which this paper will be concerned. The BNS language does not represent a failure to learn …

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to determine what differences, if any, exist in reading, math and spelling achievement scores as measured by the Stanford Achievement Tests of the second grade students who were grouped homogeneously (i.e., were assumed to have similar academic abilities) and the second grade students who were heterogeneously grouped (i.e., were grouped according to no particular criteria) when compared to their first grade scores.

These two groups of second graders, each consisting of four classes with approximately twenty-five students in each class, provide an excellent opportunity for research study for the purpose stated above because they …

Curriculum Study Of Materials And Methods Used In Primary Education, Holly Michael Overstreet Jan 1977

Curriculum Study Of Materials And Methods Used In Primary Education, Holly Michael Overstreet

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Readiness programs are often taken straight from a readiness workbook. Many children are not able to function in these workbooks, because they do not have the skills. The purpose of this project was to develop a readiness program of teacher directed activities to supplement the first grade readiness workbook. Chiefly, for those children that are having or have had difficulty in learning, and need more individual and specific instruction.

This was done by providing a list by area, of sequenced skills and appropriate activities that involve little preparation time. This will provide the teacher with a usable handbook of ideas …

The Young Child's Self-Concept: Factors Which Influence Positive Development, Julie Hofheimer Finley, Geraldine Pryor Mcpherson Jan 1975

The Young Child's Self-Concept: Factors Which Influence Positive Development, Julie Hofheimer Finley, Geraldine Pryor Mcpherson

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The fundamental question proposed in this study was: can treatment, in the form of prescribed teacher behavior, classroom atmosphere and experiences affect a positive change in the growth and development of the young child's self-concept. The secondary area questioned the extent to which the parent's self-concept score correlates to that of the child.

Based upon the assumption that adult and child self -concept can be measured, the I See Me Scale was constructed and utilized with children as a pre- and postassessment and the How I See Myself Scale was used to measure parent self -concept. Thus, it was hypothesized …

Nongraded Education: A Modified Plan For Implementation In The Elementary School, Betty S. Cowan Jan 1974

Nongraded Education: A Modified Plan For Implementation In The Elementary School, Betty S. Cowan

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Nongraded education differs theoretically from graded education in administrative and curricular design. The nongraded program responds to individual abilities and achievement, and groups accordingly. The graded school is organized on the basis of age and group expectation, and prescribes curriculum which equates with grade level requirements rather than ability. This project presents selected details of both graded and nongraded education and a modified plan for implementation of a nongraded program.
