Global Education For Young Children: A Curriculum Unit For The Kindergarten Classroom, Ann Davis Cannon

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this project was to develop a curriculum for global education appropriate for kindergarten children. A review of relevant literature provided concepts and themes that researchers consider essential components for inclusion in any global education program. Recommendations were made as to when and how the subject should be introduced in the classroom. Activities emphasized three important themes: We are one race, the human race, living on a small planet, earth; people are more alike than they are different, basic human needs bind people together; and, people of the world, even with different points of view, can live, work …

The Effect Of Peer-Editing On The Quality Of 11th Grade Composition, Barbara J. Ritchey Jan 1984

The Effect Of Peer-Editing On The Quality Of 11th Grade Composition, Barbara J. Ritchey

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The relationship between peer-editing and composition quality was investigated. The thirty subjects involved were 11th-grade English students randomly assigned to control and experimental groups. During a nine week period, both groups received the same assignments and teacher evaluation. The control group, which did not revise unless upon individual initiative, participated in a dramatics workshop while the experimental group used a worksheet developed by Leila Christenbury (1982) to edit and proofread each other's writing before evaluation by the teacher. Pre and post writing assignments were blind rated at the end of the experiment using the Diederich Rating Scale. Individual item scores …

A Comparative Study Of Maternal-Infant Bonding And Attachment As It Exists In Traditional Hospital Birthing Approaches And Certified Nurse-Midwifery Approaches, Cynthia A. Sauchuk Jan 1984

A Comparative Study Of Maternal-Infant Bonding And Attachment As It Exists In Traditional Hospital Birthing Approaches And Certified Nurse-Midwifery Approaches, Cynthia A. Sauchuk

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The focus of this paper is the problem of comparatively quantifying questionnaire information in terms of which approach; traditional hospital or certified nurse-midwifery, is more conducive to optimal maternal-infant bonding and attachment. Clarification of the percentage results evince that certified nurse-midwifery is 33% more conducive to optimal maternal-infant bonding and attachment than the traditional hospital approach. Research indicates that certified nurse-midwives birthing approach already promotes positive phenomenons of bonding and attachment whereas traditional hospital practices are just now incorporating maternal and family birthing plan choices to enhance maternal-infant bonding and attachment possibilities.

A Program Designed To Improve Listening Skills For Kindergarten, Lynn Hester Human Jan 1983

A Program Designed To Improve Listening Skills For Kindergarten, Lynn Hester Human

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Listening is an integral part of our daily lives. There are many skills involved in listening that need to be taught to students, beginning at the kindergarten level. Students need to understand the importance of listening and the need to communicate with others. Our society has become so visual in the past twenty five years with new technology that many students are guilty of not being as attentive when listening is involved.

The purpose of this project is to examine the relationship between reading and listening and to develop a program to enhance listening skills in kindergarten, The Holt Basal …

The methods that are employed by kindergarten, first, second, and third grade classroom teachers were surveyed using a questionnaire specifically designed for the study. The results of the questionnaire were presented in tables, using the raw scores. The study concludes that teachers are willing to assist pupils in this trying situation, but they feel inadequate to do so. Kindergarten through third grade teachers feel there is a need for professional training to help them be more effective …

The Cloze Procedure: A Measure Of Reading Comprehension Ability, Theresa Lorene Donaldson Jan 1983

The Cloze Procedure: A Measure Of Reading Comprehension Ability, Theresa Lorene Donaldson

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The present study was conducted in order to determine if a relationship exists between those comprehension processes measured by the Paragraph Comprehension subtest of the McGraw-Hill Basic Skills System Reading Test and the cloze test developed for this project. Two classes of undergraduate education majors enrolled in “Foundations of Performance-Based Education” were administered both the cloze test and the multiple choice comprehension test.

A correlation coefficient was computed between the summary scores on the McGraw-Hill and the summary scores on the cloze test. The results yielded a correlation of .021. These results did not support the research hypothesis.

The Effect Of Graphic And Phonemic Similarity On Syntactic Acceptability, Barbara D. Barket Jan 1983

The Effect Of Graphic And Phonemic Similarity On Syntactic Acceptability, Barbara D. Barket

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The main purpose of this study was to determine the effect of graphic and phonemic similarity on syntactic acceptability. Ten third graders were audio-taped reading material new to them at the end of the 1982-1983 school year. The children were given no assistance. Substitution miscues were recorded and analyzed according to The Goodman Taxonomy of Reading Miscues. Statistical analyses were carried out using the chi-square procedure and contingency coefficients were computed. The results indicate that graphic and phonemic similarity are somewhat related to syntactic acceptability but the relationship is very slight. Graphic similarity appears to be more independent of syntactic …

A Bilingual Curriculum Materials Development, Wilma D. Janosov Jan 1982

A Bilingual Curriculum Materials Development, Wilma D. Janosov

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Many public school reading programs utilize basal reader texts. Any materials developed for use by bilingual students would be best keyed to the basal reader being utilized in the classroom. The Ginn 720 series is one such basal reader series. Developing materials for use by bilingual students in conjunction with the Ginn 720 series would insure that the materials would be used by the classroom teacher. Focusing on a level in the series which is subsequent to the initial levels could demonstrate the utility of these materials in meeting the on-going needs of bilingual students. Level 7 is generally used …

Class Size Neo-Piagetian Testing: Theory, Results, And Implications, James A. Cortez Jan 1982

Class Size Neo-Piagetian Testing: Theory, Results, And Implications, James A. Cortez

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The main thrust of this study, therefore, revolved around the "scale-up" of the Case Instructional Sequence into a classroom size application able to be implemented by instructors with little additional practice in employing this
type of instructional sequence. Specifically, the purpose of this study was to determine the effect of the Case type treatment on the performance of two successive ninth grade physical science classes at a private, college-preparatory, secondary school in northeast Florida. These groups were to be assessed using the Tobin and Capie Test of Logical Thinking, a measure which could help assess their respective Piagetian stage.

Study Guides: Their Effect On Reading Comprehension In Content Areas In The Third Grade, Ruth Hackenson Jan 1980

Study Guides: Their Effect On Reading Comprehension In Content Areas In The Third Grade, Ruth Hackenson

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of using study guides in content areas of the elementary curriculum on the general level of comprehension of third grade pupils in those content areas. It appeared from the search of the literature that study guides had been little used for lower elementary students. More frequent use has been with upper elementary and high school students. A study using third grade subjects seemed to be of value for at least two reasons: one, to fill the gap and two, to discover the benefits that might accrue, or to lend credence …

The module consisted of fifteen taped lessons, a taped pre test and post test, and was introduced by a motivational and directional statement. The lessons were chosen for their highly motivating nature and were organized in order of difficulty and length; the easier and shorter stories at the beginning and gradually getting more difficult and longer. In the module the students …

Oral Reading, Silent Reading, And Listening Comprehension: A Comparative Study For Above-Average And Below-Average Readers, Rita M. Joost Jan 1980

Oral Reading, Silent Reading, And Listening Comprehension: A Comparative Study For Above-Average And Below-Average Readers, Rita M. Joost

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

By comparing listening comprehension to reading comprehension for above-average and below-average readers, one can come to some conclusions about where the problem resides for poor readers-whether it be lack of phonic skills or lack of general verbal competence. Because teachers need to know better where to invest their resources, investigations such as mine need to be done.

A Kindergarten Curriculum Guide In Environmental Education, Lynda H. Leukel Jan 1979

A Kindergarten Curriculum Guide In Environmental Education, Lynda H. Leukel

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The assumptions of this project imply that concepts concerning the relationships among living organisms can be assimilated by the child only if his experiences include exploration of his environment and the opportunity to discover these relationships himself. In order to help him progress, an interested, informed teacher who will encourage and help him is of prime importance.

Because progress needs to be started as early as possible, kindergarten age children will be the focus of this project. Here the school should use the opportunity to begin developing the environmentally aware citizen. Unfortunately, few texts and guides in environmental education have …

The Development Of A Handbook For Teachers To Help Them Improve The Physical Environment Of Their Classrooms, Sharon C. Steedley Jan 1979

The Development Of A Handbook For Teachers To Help Them Improve The Physical Environment Of Their Classrooms, Sharon C. Steedley

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Many educators argue that the environment to which a child is exposed every day of his school career can and will have a lasting effect on that child. The physical environment of a classroom setting encompasses many areas, according to this point of view. If this physical environment is inviting, colorful, and gives off a "positive" feeling, then the student will begin to develop more positive feelings toward school and, potentially, more positive attitudes about himself.

In the teaching-learning setting, student and teacher attitude are assumed to work closely together. When both are pleased and happy with their own physical …
