Liquid range of nanofluids is a crucial parameter as it intensively determines their application temperature scope. Meanwhile, improved thermal conductivity and stability are of great significances and comprise the main fundamental research topics of nanofluids. In this work, 2- butoxy-3,4-dihydropyran (DP), produced from a convenient one-pot three-component reaction in water, was employed as dual lipophilic brusher and metal nanoparticle anchor. It was found that DP was able to enhance the dispersing ability and thermal conductivity of SiO2 nanoparticle filled deep eutectic solvent (DES) based nanofluids simultaneously. The key to the success of this protocol mainly relies on the electrophilic property …

We quantified nitrous oxide (N2O) fluxes and total denitrification (N2O + N2) in an acidic (Ferralsol) and a near-neutral pH soil (Cambisol) to determine whether biochar’s alkalinization effect could be the mechanism inducing potential reductions in N2O fluxes. In Ferralsol, decreases in N2O emissions and in the N2O to N2O + N2 ratio were observed in both biochar and lime treatments. In Cambisol, neither biochar nor lime decreased N2O emissions, despite significantly increasing soil pH. The abundance and community structure of nosZ gene-bearing microorganisms indicated that gene abundances did not explain biochar effects, but a higher diversity of nosZ gene-bearing …

Recent developments in the field of designing novel nanostructures with various functionalities have pushed the scientific world to design and develop high-quality nanomaterials with multifunctional applications. Here, we propose a new kind of doped metal oxide pyrochlore nanostructure for solid-state phosphor, X-ray scintillator, and optical thermometry. The developed samarium-activated La2Hf2O7 (LHOS) nanoparticles (NPs) emit a narrow and stable red emission with lower color temperature and adequate critical distance under near-UV and X-ray excitations. When the LHOS NPs are exposed to an energetic X-ray beam, the Sm3+ ions situated at the symmetric environment get excited along with those located at the …

Single materials which have a multitude of photophysical processes by selective doping are in high demand in the community of material science due to their multifunctional applications. Upconversion (UC) and downconversion (DC) luminescence properties of lanthanide doped nanoparticles (NPs) are imperative for their broad application potentials. Here, we describe two series of either doubly or triply doped La2Zr2O7 NPs synthesized by a molten salt method. For the former, La2Zr2O7:Yb,Er NPs display bright red and moderate green UC (VUC) and NIR-B DC (NDC) at around 1550 nm, which are highly desirable for in-vivo bioimaging applications. For the latter, La2Zr2O7:Gd,Yb,Tm NPs demonstrate …

Growth Factors In The Human Body: A Conceptual Update, Estefania Alexandre, Debasish Bandyopadhyay

Chemistry Faculty Publications and Presentations

Growth factors are found in most of the organisms including insects, humans, plants, etc. The name ‘growth factors’ became known when the substances were active in stimulating the growth of cells and tissues. Growth factors are regulatory species (signaling molecules mainly proteins) that are generated by the body which function in binding to receptors on the cell surface and are required to stimulate the growth in living responsive cells by triggering cellular proliferation and/or cellular differentiation pathways, as well as by regulating gene transcription in the nucleus. They are quite versatile by promoting cell growth and act in a paracrine, …

Defect, doping and particle size play important roles on the optical performance of nanophosphors. In this study, undoped La2Zr2O7 NPs (LZO) displayed multicolor emission under UV irradiation due to the presence of ionized oxygen vacancies in the band gap. In addition, we explored the effect of particle size of La2Zr2O7:Eu3+ (LZOE) NPs on their structure, surface area, photoluminescence, radioluminescence, lifetime and quantum yield. There is progressive decrease in luminescence output and quantum yield as the coprecipitation pH is raised to prepare the single-source precursors for the molten salt synthesis of the NPs. Under X-ray irradiation, the LZOE …

Pharmacological Aspects Of Resveratrol, Raisa Ramirez, Debasish Bandyopadhyay

Chemistry Faculty Publications and Presentations

Resveratrol [(E)-5-(4-hydroxystyryl) benzene-1,3-diol], also known as 3,4′,5-trihydroxystilbene also known as resveratrol is classified as a phytoalexin in plants such as nuts, cocoa, berries and grapes for self-defense against injury and pathogenic attacks by bacteria and fungi. Research on this compound did not gain popularity until the 1990s when a published paper implied the relationship between resveratrol and the decrease in cardiovascular complications due to the consumption of grape fermented wine in French populations. This observation sparked research on resveratrol even though its concentration in wine is relatively low, leading to the realization that resveratrol has potential for benefits in other …

Crystal structure has a strong influence on the luminescence properties of lanthanide-doped materials. In this work, we have investigated the thermally induced structural transition in Gd 2 Hf 2 O 7 (GHO) using Eu 3+ ions as the spectroscopic probe. It was found that complete phase transition from the disordered fluorite phase (DFP) to the ordered pyrochlore phase (OPP) can be achieved in GHO with the increase of annealing temperature from 650 ? 1100 ? 1300 °C. OPP is the more stable structural form for the GHOE nanoparticles (NPs) annealed at a higher temperature based on the energy calculation by …
