From “Defilement” To “Modernity”: How Japan's Encounter With The West Brought Beef To The Table, Ying Yi Tan
Swarthmore Undergraduate History Journal
The long Tokugawa – Meiji transition (1850s – 1880s) is arguably one of the most profound socio-economic transitions that Japan underwent in its history. This paper uses beef consumption in Japan as a lens to further investigate the players involved in this transition. Historically more eschewed than other types of meat and tightly associated with the notion of the “other,” beef became an embodiment of progress and modernity during the Meiji Period. Through tracing the historical shift in the Japanese perception of beef, this paper argues that the evolution of beef consumption corresponds to the radically shifting attitudes of the …

This study explores the impact of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI), in particular, ChatGPT, on the public sector workforce in the United States, focusing on task replacement, assistance potential, and the evolving landscape of skills. Utilizing GPT-4 to evaluate 1,022 core tasks across 51 public sector occupations, we provide an exploratory analysis of the roles susceptible to ChatGPT automation and those in which ChatGPT can augment human efforts. Our findings reveal that while 63% of tasks are resistant to ChatGPT replacement, primarily due to their requirement for physical presence, emotional intelligence, and complex decision-making, tasks that are routine, rule-based, and involving …

Evaluating The Effectiveness Of More Public Support For Stronger E-Waste Regulations, Tiaka Hyatt-Geter
EMPA Capstones
E-waste management is a critical issue facing our society today. Fifty-three million metric tons of e-waste was produced in America alone in 2019; 17.4% of this e-waste was properly disposed of world-wide. By the year 2030, 81.6 million tons of e-waste will be produced globally (World Economic Forum, 2024). Recology San Bruno Transfer Station is the only processing center within the City of San Bruno, CA open to the public for e-waste disposal with limited operating hours. This mixed-methods research (MMR) study investigates factors influencing consumers’ intention to properly dispose of consumer-grade electronics. Specific hypotheses linked factors such as convenience, …

Impact Of Equitable Housing For Students Ages 18-30: Creating Diversified Population In San Mateo County, Ca, Brittany Burgo
EMPA Capstones
San Mateo County in California faced significant challenges in achieving equitable housing development, especially for young adults aged 18-30, including students whose housing needs were often overlooked. Recent census data reflected that this age group had been steadily increasing, highlighting the urgency of addressing their housing concerns (U.S. Census Bureau, n.d.). The median home price was over $1.5 million, which meant many low- and moderate-income residents struggled to find suitable housing. This study investigated the displacement of long-term residents, the lack of affordable housing options, and the absence of diversity in new developments, emphasizing the need to redefine housing equity …

Hard Or Soft: An Exploration Of What Skills A Sport Management Student Is Lacking, Ashley Ryder, Jillian Mcniff Villemaire, Taylor Behl
The COSMA Journal
An important measure of success of sport management programs in higher education is how prepared students are for their professional careers. Programs often include various experiential learning opportunities such as internships in their curriculum to improve student employability. However, there is still concern that students may not be prepared for success in their internships and in the field. The purpose of this study was to identify which skills sport management student interns needed the most improvement, according to their intern supervisor. Using a single institution, this study analyzed intern supervisor’s questionnaire responses from 2017-2022 at a small, private college in …

Journal of Marketing and Consumer Behaviour in Emerging Markets
Within an emerging market context, the purchase of dairy free milk alternatives is not well understood. Using a qualitative, exploratory-descriptive approach, data was gathered in-person and online from 35 participants through mini-focus groups and semi-structured interviews. Through inductive-deductive thematic data analysis, findings describe consumer purchase intention towards UHT …

College of the Environment Internship Reports
My primary project at IKO Pacific centered around getting a recycling program set up for our substantial amounts of plastic film waste. The film is low-density polyethylene, which I knew had the capability to be recycled. A major question I had to answer at the start was, "Just how much of this waste are we producing, and how frequently are we producing it?" This required me to go out into the plant and record the weight and volume produced for our plastic film. Using our lab on site, I used a small scale to measure the weight of five plastic …

Price Discovery On Decentralized Exchanges, Agostino Capponi, Ruizhe Jia, Shihao Yu
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Decentralized exchanges (DEXs) allow traders to express their willingness to pay for quick execution through a public priority fee bidding mechanism. This influences the trading strategy of informed traders and creates a distinct price discovery process on DEXs compared to centralized exchanges. We present empirical evidence that high-fee DEX trades contain more private information. Informed traders bid high fees not only to avoid execution risk from blockchain congestion, but also to compete for execution priority. Using a dataset of Ethereum mempool orders, we demonstrate that informed traders employ a ``jump bidding'' strategy, placing high initial bids to deter potential competitors.

Dentistry And The Law: Unpaid Internships In Your Office: What You Should Know, Daniel Schulte Jd
The Journal of the Michigan Dental Association
A reprint of a previous Journal column, Mr. Schulte discusses how unpaid internships require careful legal consideration. Interns must primarily benefit educationally from their tasks to avoid being classified as employees, necessitating compensation. Office work typically performed by employees must not be assigned to interns. Patient consent is required to observe dental procedures, and interns must receive HIPAA training. Exposure to hazardous materials should be avoided, adhering to laws like Michigan’s Occupational Safety and Health Act. Proper training and task limitations ensure compliance and a beneficial internship experience.

Staff Matters: Supporting Working Parents As A Recruitment And Retention Strategy, Jodi Schafer Sphr, Shrm-Scp
The Journal of the Michigan Dental Association
Supporting employees who are parents is essential. Harvard data shows 73% of employees have caregiving responsibilities, highlighting the need for proactive strategies. First, communicate with employees to understand their needs for flexibility. Consider offering flexible schedules, part-time roles, and on-call staff to manage absences. Partnering with local childcare providers for sick coverage and allowing children at work occasionally can also help. Clear communication and defined parameters for flexibility are crucial. Implementing these strategies can build a supportive culture, enhancing employee retention and commitment.
