Since launching a spoonful yogurt ``Yoplait`` for the first time in the nation, Binggrae Co. has established the reputation of the Yoplait brand, and secured its leading position in the yogurt market. This study examined how Binggrae as a market pioneer (in the spoonful yogurt market) or a market follower(in the drinking yogurt market) has developed and responded to the yogurt market in which competition between companies are becoming fierce. Instead of being bound by conventional competition rules, Binggrae was found to have implemented distinctive marketing strategies for new products. That is, providing new values, the company led the market …

Improving The Moral Judgment Of Accounting Students: An Experiment, David Christensen, David Rees, Jeff Barnes

Mountain Plains Journal of Business and Technology

Recent highly publicized scandals involving accounting ethical failures have renewed recommendations to include ethics education in the accounting curriculum. Hundreds of studies confirm that the moral judgment of students improves during the college years, but the cause is unclear. Using a pretest-posttest design and the Defining Issues Test, we measured the effect of ethical dilemmas on the moral judgment of 81 accounting students over a semester. Results showed that the moral judgment of accounting students improved significantly.

Mark's Dilemma Bringing A New Product To Market, A Case Study, Larry E. Watkins, Roxanne Stell Oct 2006

Mark's Dilemma Bringing A New Product To Market, A Case Study, Larry E. Watkins, Roxanne Stell

Mountain Plains Journal of Business and Technology

Mark Thatcher sat by the side of the fast-flowing Colorado River deep in the Grand Canyon immersed in thought. It was appropriate that this was the location he had chosen to make one of the most important decisions of his business life. After all, it was the five years he spent as a guide/boatman on this very river that had given him the idea for his sport sandal. He had experienced first-hand the difficulties of wearing shower sandals (“flip-flops”) in an environment characterized by mud and swift water. And “sneakers” didn’t work much better. Although they usually stayed on the …

The New Division Of Labor In Massachusetts, Daniel Georgianna, Corinn Williams Oct 2006

The New Division Of Labor In Massachusetts, Daniel Georgianna, Corinn Williams

New England Journal of Public Policy

In The New Division of Labor, Levy and Murnane describe a world of work re-shaped by computers where workers whose jobs can be reduced to steps based on rules are replaced, and where jobs that require judgment or negotiation are enhanced. The authors test the hypothesis of Levy and Murnane’s work with a close look at Fall River and New Bedford. These cities, with high unemployment and low rates of educational attainment, show patterns of job replacement by computers as compared with Massachusetts as a whole — a wealthy state with high rates of education, which shows a pattern of …

A Decade Of Changes For Virginia Freshwater Aquaculture (1993-2003), Scott H. Newton

Virginia Journal of Science

Aquaculture surveys were designed and initiated along with the writing of the State Aquaculture Plan during 1993 to 1995. The first Virginia Aquaculture Survey, conducted for the production year 1993, established the status of both freshwater and marine commercial industries. Subsequent surveys were conducted to trace industry developments relevant to production aspects and economic impacts. Survey data from Virginia Agricultural Statistics Service Reports for 1993, 1995, 1997, and 2003 summarize a decade of Virginia freshwater aquaculture information. Significant changes in sales among the principal aquaculture species occurred over the 10-year period. The 1993 freshwater aquaculture value of $2.8 million increased …

Over the past 20 to 25 years small scale enterprises have exploded in the informal sector of the Nigeria's businesses. The informal sector study (CBN, NISEK 2000) showed that over 25,000 small scale enterprises were in existence in the agro industrial production sector of the economy during the year 2000. This paper proffers a model of funding called "Proof of Concept Fund" as a bridging credit facility to research institutes and small scale industrialist who would want to patent/franchise budding research findings to commercialization. Sources Of Stress For Department Chairs In Colleges Of Business, Charles D. Pringle

Mountain Plains Journal of Business and Technology

This survey of department chairs at AACSB-member business schools identifies five major sources of stress in the chair’s job. The most potent of these is the need to balance the conflicting demands of teaching, research, and administrative duties while finding the time to perform them effectively. The others are making major faculty decisions, interacting with faculty, networking, and performing routine job duties. Variables that are associated with increasing or decreasing levels of stress in these five areas are identified and discussed.

Mountain Plains Journal of Business and Technology

This study examines the relationship between education and income in Texas counties that are located along the border with Mexico. Estimation results confirm earlier research for this region. Parameter heterogeneity underscores the increased importance of education in the service-oriented labor that has emerged in recent years in the United States. Simulation results quantify the income gains that could potentially be observed if drop out rates were lowered in the border counties included in the sample.

Many instructors have hailed the benefits of experiential learning in the management classroom. In this article I review these benefits and present a framework that explores how competitive and cooperative learning structures can serve as integrative and motivational tools. When used appropriately, these tools can increase a student’s engagement in the learning process. Additionally, I outline how a balanced instructional approach can be created and implemented in the management classroom.

Polygamy: Illegal Relationship, Legal Tax Shelter, Robin Boneck, Timothy Lewis Oct 2006

Polygamy: Illegal Relationship, Legal Tax Shelter, Robin Boneck, Timothy Lewis

Mountain Plains Journal of Business and Technology

The polygamist community in southern Utah has been the subject of investigations for welfare fraud, bank fraud, bigamy and crimes against children. Yet, there have been no publicized investigations regarding income tax avoidance. A common perception in southern Utah is that polygamists do not pay federal income taxes. This perception is supported by published income tax statistics. This article explores possible reasons the polygamist community, in general, is able to avoid taxation. The results of the research indicate that polygamists who are able to avoid taxes do so as a result of aggressive tax planning as applied to their unique …

A Lemons “Mirage”: Erroneous Perceptions Of Asymmetric Information In The Market For Arizona Ranchettes, Matthew G. Nagler, Daniel E. Osgood Oct 2006

A Lemons “Mirage”: Erroneous Perceptions Of Asymmetric Information In The Market For Arizona Ranchettes, Matthew G. Nagler, Daniel E. Osgood

Mountain Plains Journal of Business and Technology

Owners of modest-sized,recreation-oriented ranch properties, known as “ranchettes,” appear to judge a key characteristic of the quality of their properties, the extent of vegetative “greenness,” based on their own observation, despite the greater reliability of publicly available climate data. The discrepancy between personal observation and public data is perceived erroneously by owners as reflecting an information asymmetry that favors the former. The consequence of this misperception is adverse selection: transplant owners, who are not familiar with long-term local weather patterns from direct observation, delay the sale of properties that are greener during their term of ownership. Econometric evidence is presented from …

Software And Internet Industry Workers: Implications For The Future Of Work In Massachusetts, Sarah Kuhn, Paula Raymann

New England Journal of Public Policy

Those at the leading edge of the new economy — workers in software and Internet workplaces — can tell us something about the future of work in our new world. The authors have conducted a National Science Foundation-funded study of women and men working in IT. They find that while pay and the opportunity to do interesting work are major attractions, challenges facing this workforce include stress, difficulties balancing work and family, and concerns about employment security. While women and men reported similar attitudes and experiences in many areas, in others there were still significant differences.

Social Security: From Then To Now, 70 Years Of Growth, Patricia Miller Selvy Oct 2006

Social Security: From Then To Now, 70 Years Of Growth, Patricia Miller Selvy

Accounting Historians Notebook

Today, just as in 1935, there appears to be a fundamental belief in American society that those who have worked and made contributions into a retirement system should have some assurance that they will not be left unprotected by our government once they have reached an age where they cannot work. The problem we are facing as a society is one of determining how to offer retirees income protection while not taxing our shrinking working population too heavily. There are many proposals being debated on how to fix the system, but before decisions are made on how to restructure our …

The remainder of this paper is organised into five sections: first, wood and iron shipbuilding are compared; second, an analysis is made of the development of the Laing and Doxford shipyards; third, there is a consideration of the role of accounting information for decision-making in shipbuilding; fourth, there is a discussion …

An Evaluation Of Strategic Alliances In Liner Shipping-An Empirical Study Of Ckyh, Hua-An Lu, James Cheng, Tai-Shen Lee

Journal of Marine Science and Technology

The activities of alliances between liner carriers have increased intensively since the last decade, satisfying a whole new requirement of shippers stemmed from the industrial globalization. The development of strategic alliances is very important to the liner industry, especially based on a perspective of the booming market–Asia. For finding co-operative niches, possible disadvantages, successful factors, and the future development of the alliance co-operation, the investigation in this paper focused on members of the CKYH, a potential strategic alliance group with four major carriers in Asia. We employed the Delphi method to conduct two rounds of survey for procuring the consensus …

Behavior Of Ship Officers In Maneuvering To Prevent A Collision, Bin Lin Sep 2006

Behavior Of Ship Officers In Maneuvering To Prevent A Collision, Bin Lin

Journal of Marine Science and Technology

In recent years, increased ship size and traffic density have heightened the risk for collision. When a ship is exposed to such a risk, the officer in charge must take evasive actions appropriate with the circumstances to prevent this from happening. Such actions shall comply with the International Regulations for Preventing Collision at Sea. However, violations of the regulations can usually be found in collision cases. This study is focused on the actions of the officers in charge, and whether or not they obey the rules of the regulations, and what are the reasons for navigational faults. The assessment is …

Evaluating The Comparative Efficiency Of Eleven States’ Highway Expenditures, Hokey Min, Thomas Lambert Sep 2006

Evaluating The Comparative Efficiency Of Eleven States’ Highway Expenditures, Hokey Min, Thomas Lambert

Journal of Transportation Management

In an era of budget deficits and financial cutbacks, the efficiency of state highway finances dictates future investment in road construction and maintenance. Considering the significant impact of highway infrastructure on the survival and competitiveness of the logistics industry, this paper aims to develop a meaningful set of benchmarks that will guide the state government authority in making wise investment decisions regarding road construction and maintenance. In particular, we propose a data envelopment analysis that is proven to be useful for measuring the operational efficiency of various profit or non-profit organizations. Using the examples of state highway finances for Kentucky …

Conceptual Issues On Savings In Nigeria., A. J. Adam, A. V. Agba Sep 2006

Conceptual Issues On Savings In Nigeria., A. J. Adam, A. V. Agba

Bullion

It is often held that capital accumulation is necessary and sufficient condition for growth and capital accumulation is almost synonymous with saving, hence the route to growth is then one of raising savings and smoothing consumption (Deaton, 1991). Savings is one of the key relevant macroeconomic variables in any economy. Its impact on the rate of capital accumulation, productivity and the degree of dependency of a nation on foreign capital and foreign ownership of domestic assets cannot be overemphasised. This paper reviews conceptual issues on savings behaviour in Nigeria. It also provided an analysis of the factors that may have …

A Pro-Poor Framework For Enhancing Micro-Savings In Nigeria., M. C. Ononugbo, C. P. Nwosu

Bullion

Nigerians generally do not seem to have what is usually referred to as “the saving culture”. This assertion may not entirely be true as it based on information from the formal banking system without recourse to the savings activities at the informal sector of the economy. It is a fact that the informal sector of the economy is large with unrecorded transactions. Consequently, this paper attempts to examine the fundamental issues in saving and thereafter design a formal savings habit of the populace, especially the low-income group. The framework is designed to mobilise micro-savings, hitherto kept with thrift collectors and …

The Legal Framework For Currency Management In Nigeria., Anthony Olatujoye

The legal provisions governing currency management in Nigeria and some of the legal challenges for the CBN are highlighted and examined in part II.
