Is the executive’s compensation structure influenced by the credit rating assigned to his company? I analyze a panel of U.S. public firms using the random-effects and fixed-effects estimations. Compared to firms with lower credit risk, I find that firms facing higher probability of default provide more incentives for their CEOs.

When a nursing unit is chronically short-staffed, nurses must maintain an intense pace to ensure that patients receive timely care. Since China’s open door policy enacted in 1978, massive numbers of Chinese people have gone overseas for education or professional development. Such “brain drain” triggered China’s state level policy reform to harness these talents back home, and consequently both numbers and return rate of these returnees have been increasing over the past decade. These returnees are usually called “sea turtle” (a homonym for “returnee” in Chinese). My first essay examines risk taking and performance of bond mutual funds. The second essay investigates insider trading, informativeness and price efficiency around the world. My dissertation studies the behavior of international credit flow and the associated monetary policy spillover effect. In the first chapter, I am interested in decomposing the long-run variations and the short-run variations of US dollar denominated credit in emerging market economies. This paper uses a multivariate correlated unobserved component model to study the dynamic relationship among dollar credit in emerging market economies, US interest rates and the dollar index. Starting in the 1980s, financial innovations and technology improvements led to important changes in corporate financing, primarily a significant decrease in the share of bank loans and an increased share of bonds and stocks. This change challenged the traditional banking business. The Gramm–Leach–Bliley (GLB) Act of 1999 allowed banks to engage more freely in non-traditional activities such as investment banking, venture capital, security brokerage, insurance underwriting, and asset securitization. The first essay tests whether outside directors’ dissention increases firm value through outside directors’ monitoring role. In this dissertation we examine the financial contagion from the U.S. to the Americas during the U.S. financial crisis.

First, we examine the relationship between the U.S. perceived market volatility (VIX), perceived credit risk (TED spread), and the U.S. financial crisis, on the stock returns of these countries. Our findings suggest that VIX has negatively effects on the stock returns of all these countries and that this relationship increases significantly during the U.S. financial crisis. We also identify that increases in the TED spread, have negative effects on the stock market returns of Canada and Latin America, and this increases …

In this dissertation, I conduct three empirical studies exploring the relation between likability factors, crowdfunding characteristics and entrepreneurial performance. Together these studies integrate aspects of major entrepreneurial likability factors including liking of the entrepreneur (source attractiveness, credibility, personal traits) and liking of the message (verbal content and expression), and components of nonverbal and verbal cues. Qëllimi i këtij studimi ishtë analizimi i marrëdhënies mes motivimit dhe performancës së punonjësve me efektivitetin organizativ në sektorin bankar. Për të realizuar këtë hulumtim u përdor metodologjia sasiore. Në studim u morën 65 punonjës nga katër banka që operojnë në Gjilan. Të dhënat u mblodhën me anë të 3 pyetësorëve dhe të dhënat u analizuan nëpërmjet programit statistikor SPSS. Rezultatet e korrelacionit treguan se midis motivimit të punonjësve dhe efektivitetit organizativ ekziston marrëdhënie e rëndësishme pozitive (r=.491, p<0.01). Gjithashtu marrëdhënie e rëndësishme pozitive eksiziton edhe mes performancës së punonjësve dhe efektivitetit organizativ (r=.699, p<0.01). Marrëdhënia mes performacnës dhe efektivitetit organizativ është më e fortë se mes motivimit dhe efektivietit organizativ. Rezultatet e analizës së regresionit treguan se motivimi t=2.89, p=.005 dhe performanca t=6.518, p=.000 kanë koefiçent statistikisht të rëndësishëm, që do të thotë se si motivimi edhe performanca e punonjësve janë koefiçentë statistikisht të rëndësishëm në vlerësimin e efektivitetit organizativ.

Ben Peterson, CEO of BambooHR, hypothesized “replacing talent runs as high as two times’ annual salary” (Maurer, 2015). This dissertation includes three separate studies related to shareholder activism campaigns. The first study, presented in Chapter II, examines the question whether shareholder activism creates value for the targets’ shareholder. I find positive and significant abnormal returns on a day of the targeting announcement, 1.55%, and one day after, 1.33%. For Buy-and-Hold return analysis, I find that stock prices of the targets start to decrease 24 months before activism campaign announcements. Further results indicate that the targets are also underperforming to the market and to their matchings at pre-announcement periods. For post-announcement periods, however, targets’ stock returns recover and outperform …
