Handbook For Police Chaplains, James Albert Stegman

Excerpt: "The Handbook grew out of the need to bring together information helpful to the organization and operation of a police chaplaincy . Many police agencies employ the services of a chaplain, either volunteer, full- time, or a combination of both. Few police agencies have a well documented description of how the police chaplain is to function in relation to the police organization ."

The Elements Of Wisdom Literature In The Messianic King Prophecy Of The First Isaiah Centered On Isa. 9:2-7; 11:1-9, Yen Pyo Hong May 1984

The Elements Of Wisdom Literature In The Messianic King Prophecy Of The First Isaiah Centered On Isa. 9:2-7; 11:1-9, Yen Pyo Hong

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

Excerpt: "The prophecies of Isaiah are among the most important theological expressions in the Bible, and the Messianic oracle is one of those which has the most important values in the Old Testament.

The study of the Messianic idea has been done by many scholars, and our knowledge about the character of Isaiah's Messiah regarded it as eschatological. 1 But, even though Isaiah's Messianic king of pre-exilic period could be connected to the eschatological Messiah of later Judaism, it is too early to call him the eschatological being.

This research will confine its concern to the character of the Messiah …

The history itself falls readily into eight historic periods..."

A Compilation Of The Summer Ministries Of 5-Day Club Training Conference, Chin Pei-Yu Fung

An Analytical Study Of Four Churches In The Light Of The Seven Vital Signs Of A Healthy Church With A Tentative Application To Lynwood Friends Church, Glenn K. Armstrong May 1984

An Analytical Study Of Four Churches In The Light Of The Seven Vital Signs Of A Healthy Church With A Tentative Application To Lynwood Friends Church, Glenn K. Armstrong

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

It was at a church growth conference with Dr. Medford H. Jones that pastors of Northwest Yearly Meeting of Friends Church began giving serious thought to planting and developing large Friends churches in the Northwest. Jones spoke of other passive or plateaued churches, which became growing, dynamic churches. New hope was conceived for Friends.

Since that first conference, many seminars and church conferences have been held, books have been read and papers have been studied. Churches do not grow simply through prayer, faith and hard work. Through research, study and experience, it has been determined that there are distinct patterns …

A Curriculum Resource Text For The Alcohol Unit In Public And Private Schools, Lester A. Wetzstein May 1984

A Curriculum Resource Text For The Alcohol Unit In Public And Private Schools, Lester A. Wetzstein

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

The absolute worth of a human life and the social order in which that life finds identity and expression provide the base for an initiative to pursue the development of life's highest potential with assurance in the future that corning generations may expect the same opportunity. The manifold evidences graphically documented relative to man's inhumanity to man in our present age clearly invoke a spirit of urgency for realistic solutions now and not some far distant time.

Melanchthon's Understanding Of The Will In The Loci Communes, Richard Osslund May 1984

Melanchthon's Understanding Of The Will In The Loci Communes, Richard Osslund

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

It is a commonplace among many Lutheran theologians that Philip Melanchthon was a synergist. The purpose of this study is to evaluate this theological judgment on the basis of Melanchthon’s Loci of 1521, 1535, 1543, 1555, and 1559. The conclusion of this study is that Melanchthon's writings do not support the charge of synergism which has been directed against him. It is not the intention of the author to ascribe malevolence or lack of scholarly integrity to those who have described Melanchthon's position as synergistic. There are reasons for the historical judgment that Melanchthon was "the father of synergism in …

John's Use Of The Absolute Εγω Eimi As A Reflection Of The Theology Of The Prologue To The Fourth Gospel, John Upton May 1984

John's Use Of The Absolute Εγω Eimi As A Reflection Of The Theology Of The Prologue To The Fourth Gospel, John Upton

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The investigation will center on John's intended meaning of έγω είμι as the phrase relates to the unique Prologue which prefaces the Fourth Gospel. It is hoped that, in approaching the Prologue as the thematic key to the Gospel, it will provide guidance in ascertaining the relative purpose of the έγω είμιs as they reflect the purpose of the Gospel as a whole; the Prologue should provide a direction for drawing some conclusions as to John's intent in the use of this phrase.

Significant Exegetical Aspects Of The Sadducees' Question To Jesus Regarding The Resurrection, Wilfred Karsten May 1984

Significant Exegetical Aspects Of The Sadducees' Question To Jesus Regarding The Resurrection, Wilfred Karsten

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The purpose of this investigation, therefore, is to take a closer look at the pericope as presented by the Synoptic writers, in order to ascertain if these disparaging comments (and others like them) are warranted. In essence, this thesis is a defense of the view which holds that Jesus' answer to the Sadducees' question was a direct and explicit proof of the resurrection of the dead.

Divorce And Remarriage In 1 Corinthians 7_10-16- An Evaluation Of The Interpretation Of Writers Of The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, Jerald Joersz May 1984

Divorce And Remarriage In 1 Corinthians 7_10-16- An Evaluation Of The Interpretation Of Writers Of The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, Jerald Joersz

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The purpose of this thesis is to re-examine 1 Cor. 7:10-16, on the basis of which desertio malitiosa has been regarded as a second "ground" for divorce, with the liberty of remarriage. Our intention is to address the question at the level suggested by the second of the above two approaches to the interpretation of the divorce and remarriage texts, and to inquire whether in fact the traditional position regarding malicious desertion as articulated by theologians of The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod LCMS) can be substantiated by a valid exegesis of the text.9 With the Biblical text as our norm, we …

The Priesthood Of All Believers And The Theology Of Pietism, Breno Faber May 1984

The Priesthood Of All Believers And The Theology Of Pietism, Breno Faber

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

Pietism and pietistic emphases are becoming popular again because during the seventeenth and early eighteenth century the Pietists sought to revitalize Christianity in ways familiar to twentieth century Christians seeking to do the same. Pietism sought to foster a more vigorous personal and public piety among the people. They sought to improve the education of ministers in practical piety so that they might better guide and edify their people. They sought to encourage the reading of the Bible, Christian education of the youthful and the mature, demonstrated social concern and resposibility in their philanthropic enterprises, and embarked upon ambitious programs …

The Life And Ministry Of Carrie Judd Montgomery, Daniel E. Albrecht May 1984

The Life And Ministry Of Carrie Judd Montgomery, Daniel E. Albrecht

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

If ever there was a woman whose life reflected the dynamic forces within key American religous movements of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Carrie Judd Montgomery was that woman. Before she died she participated in the rise and development of holiness, faith-healing, Christian and Missionary Alliance, and pentecostal movements. The thread of her life was interwoven into the living tapestry of these movements. A leader in her own right, she rubbed elbows with other prominent religious spokesmen of the day, such as A.B. Simpson, A.J. Gordon, Charles Cullis, W.E. Boardman, Aimee Simple McPherson, Smith Wigglesworth, Robert Craig, J.R. …

The Theological Argument Of Hebrews 11 In Light Of Its Literary Form, Merland Miller May 1984

The Theological Argument Of Hebrews 11 In Light Of Its Literary Form, Merland Miller

Doctor of Theology Dissertation

The scope of this study does not end with literary form, however. Too often in the past the study of literary form has been either consciously or unconsciously divorced from the study of theological argument. The hypothesis of this paper is that an understanding of literary form will aid in determining and illuminating theological argument.

The material for the study of literary form will be the texting Hebrews itself, along with the prior extant texts whose literary structure and characteristics are similar to Hebrews 11. The existence of literary material lying behind the present text is conjectural and beyond the …

Exegesis Of The Book Of Malachi, Malcolm M. Hutton Apr 1984

Exegesis Of The Book Of Malachi, Malcolm M. Hutton

Honors Theses

The work of an exegete is invaluable if one is to uncover the intended meaning of any passage. Contrary to what many religionists so demonstrably insist, scripture is no exception. Scholars declare that to shy away from scripture simply because it is God's Holy Word is to do great injustice to the passage. Scripture should be open to the same careful scrutiny as is applied to any other writing. Certainly a careful study of God's Word to mankind would not cause us to dismiss scriptural utterances but would only serve to enhance our understanding of what is being transmitted to …

Workbook Section To Accompany A Topical Plan For Conducting Marriage And Parenting Seminars For Couples, John R. Jamison Apr 1984

Workbook Section To Accompany A Topical Plan For Conducting Marriage And Parenting Seminars For Couples, John R. Jamison

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

Excerpt: "Some groups involved in advocating male-female equality go so far as to argue that there are virtually no real biological differences between the sexes other than the reproductive systems. They hold that any substantial differences in sexual, social, or psychological responses are a result of conditioning differences for boys and girls. What is your opinion?"

A Topical Plan For Conducting Marriage And Parenting Seminars For Couples, John R. Jamison Apr 1984

A Topical Plan For Conducting Marriage And Parenting Seminars For Couples, John R. Jamison

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

Excerpt: "To write about marriage and parenting these days seems quite presumptuous. After all, there is a plentiful supply of informative books, pamphlets, periodicals, films, filmstrips and tapes. How do I know this? Personal visits were made to several Christian book stores, public libraries, college and seminary libraries. Then, close examination was made of book catalogs, the Minister's Library (and supplements),! the 1981-82 Current Christian Books, film and filmstrips catalogs, and tape catalogs. Why, then, do a writing project in a field already "crammed" with good material ?"

The Impact Of The Mormon Migration On The Community Of Kirtland, Ohio, 1830-1839, Mark R. Grandstaff Apr 1984

The Impact Of The Mormon Migration On The Community Of Kirtland, Ohio, 1830-1839, Mark R. Grandstaff

Theses and Dissertations

In the early decades of the nineteenth-century, an era of cultural change and disorientation, many turned to revivals to displace insecure emotionalism and to insure themselves of a place in the emerging society. Others, such as the Mormons sought an all encompassing plan that would dispel confusion and restore order to a decadent society. This search led some Mormons to follow their Prophet to Kirtland, Ohio. Once in Kirtland, various sociological conflicts developed which affected how the citizens of Kirtland would perceive their Mormon neighbors. Tantamount to these conflicts was the rapidly increasing Mormon population which triggered a corresponding rise …

Progression For Chamber Orchestra, David Edward Hansen Apr 1984

Progression For Chamber Orchestra, David Edward Hansen

Masters Theses

"Progression” is a musical composition in three movements written for two flutes, two oboes, two clarinets, two bassoons, two violins, two violas, two cellos, double bass, and percussion. The instrumentation was chosen for the purpose of providing a balance of many timbres without employing an ensemble of large proportions.

"Progression" was composed with a concept in mind. That concept involved the interaction of mankind and nature, and was simply the creative inspiration for the piece. No attempt should be made to extract the concept from the piece upon hearing it, since it is music to be enjoyed and appreciated.

Musically, …
