The Family Dialogue: Language Acculturation And Its Impact On Perceived Family Conflict Among Asian Americans, Qi Xu
Senior Projects Spring 2011
The present study examines the acculturation gap and the acculturation dimension of language between 1st - 2nd generation Asian Americans (Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese, Malaysian) adolescents and their first generation immigrant parents and its predicted relationship to the likelihood of perceived family conflict. Survey data was collected from 34 Asian American college students using the Suinn-Lew Asian Self Identity Acculturation Scale (SL-ASIA) and the Asian American Family Conflicts Scale (AAFCS). It was predicted that the larger the gap between the levels of acculturation and language acculturation of the parent and child, the greater the likelihood of experienced family conflict. …

Senior Projects Fall 2011
I began senior project with the intention of creating an entirely sculptural body of work. This ambition changed with my summer internship at the Solomon R. Guggenheim museum in New York. It was here within the exquisite architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright’s museum that I decided to focus on two-dimensional work. This change came about because I was inspired by the Lee Ufan retrospective: Marking Infinity, on view at the time. I was specifically intrigued by Mr. Lee’s use of emptiness. The vast empty spaces within his paintings and prints provided the viewer with a moment of meditation. Curator Alexandra …
A Violent Reconciliation: Exploring The Rule Of Law, Violence, And States Of Exception Through John Ford’S The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance And Christopher Nolan’S The Dark Knight, Nathan Donarum
Senior Projects Fall 2011
Is it possible for extralegal action, or violence, to be reconciled with the rule of law? This is a question that intrudes upon the idea that, as Aristotle stated, “Law should govern.” In essence, the rule of law is supposed to exist to prevent, or to transition from, the arbitrary use of power and deployment of force. If the rule of law exists, then there need not be arbitrary action. But if the transition to, or re-instating of, an ordered state requires a lawless act, or acts, inherently, then no stark dichotomy between the rule of law and violence can …
