The Reveal: A Technical Study And Conservation Treatment Of An Overpaint Portrait, Camille Ferrer Sep 2024

The Reveal: A Technical Study And Conservation Treatment Of An Overpaint Portrait, Camille Ferrer

Art Conservation Master's Projects

A severely damaged 19th-century oil painting depicting a portrait of a woman was treated at Patricia H. and E. Garman Art Conservation Department. A typed letter provided by the owner mentioned that it has been previously restored yet returned with unsatisfactory results. After further examination, the painting appeared to have been previously treated multiple times by different people. There was overpaint distinctly present on the face and later discovered to be present overall. The full state of condition of the painting was initially unknown due to the sum of the surface being overpainted. However, there were evidence of paint loss …

Not So Cavalier: Technical Study And Conservation Treatment Of A Potential 17th Century Anglo-Dutch Military Portrait Painting, Josephine Ren

Art Conservation Master's Projects

A potential 17th century Anglo-Dutch military portrait painting from the Memorial Art Gallery at the University of Rochester in Rochester, New York arrived at the Garman Art Conservation Department at Buffalo State University for conservation research and treatment in 2022. The painting’s title, date, and artist were unknown and the subject was initially referred to as a “17th Century Dutch Cavalier.” Little information existed on the provenance and history of the artwork. The painting was in a state of structural instability and aesthetic disfigurement and showed evidence of a past restoration campaign. This master’s project attempted to broadly …

Nineteen Figures And Counting: Contextualization And Conservation Treatment Of A Jacob Spoel Painting, Susan P. Enterline

Art Conservation Master's Projects

This study focuses on the research, technical analysis, and treatment of an 1852 Jacob Spoel painting (Untitled, acc.62.28, 80cm H x 105cm W x 1.75cm D) owned by the Memorial Art Gallery and described as a ‘family gathering.’ When received by the department, the painting was not in a fit state for display; it was not structurally sound and had a disfiguring varnish reducing the readability of the composition. Technical research, multimodal imaging, radiography, and instrumental analysis, including x-ray fluorescence spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, cross-sectional analysis, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, were carried out to understand the materials and …

Basil Bunting And The Challenges Of Literary Translation From Persian Into English: A Case Of Rūdhakī, Emadeddin Naghipour Jul 2024

Basil Bunting And The Challenges Of Literary Translation From Persian Into English: A Case Of Rūdhakī, Emadeddin Naghipour

Languages and Cultures Publications

The purpose of this study is to analyze Basil Bunting's literary translation. It turns to the theories of translation by Steiner, Benjamin, and Eco, among others, to study Bunting’s translation of Rūdhakī’s ‘Dandaniyyeh’ poem, a 10th century qaṣīdah replete with mesmerizing musicality and with a form galvanized in its originating language, time, and locale. A deep contrastive analysis of its translation into English by the poet, Bunting, shows the difficulties that can arise from literal translations of classical Persian poetry.

The Benefits Of Singing And Audiation For Beginning Musicians, Elissa Harris Jul 2024

The Benefits Of Singing And Audiation For Beginning Musicians, Elissa Harris

Graduate Research Showcase

This literature review explores the impact of audiation and singing on the aural sensitivity of novice musicians, shedding light on the fundamental role of these processes in music education. Audiation, the cognitive ability to internally hear and understand music, and singing, as an active manifestation of audiation, are integral components of musical development. However, their precise influence on the development of aural sensitivity in beginners remains understudied.

Through a comprehensive review of existing literature and empirical investigation, this review seeks to uncover the relationship between audiation, singing, and the enhancement of aural skills among novice musicians. Furthermore, the literature review …

“There Is A Woman Concerned In This”: Female Gender Roles In The Novels And Adaptations Of Agatha Christie, Carrie Y. Hess Jul 2024

“There Is A Woman Concerned In This”: Female Gender Roles In The Novels And Adaptations Of Agatha Christie, Carrie Y. Hess

Waldo Library Student Exhibits

Throughout my dissertation, I analyze what Agatha Christie's 1934 Murder on the Orient Express and 1937 Death on the Nile and their 1970s and 2000s feature film adaptations suggest about the roles of mothers, female friends, and lovers. The underlying issue I speak to is how these texts, working off of a similar storyline, speak differently to these roles, especially when analyzed across time. Several key questions guiding my research and writing include: What does it mean to be a mother? Is she a savior, an avenger, or both? How does the violence associated with the one reconcile with the …

Conferences

Violence and war can be incited, and so can peace. This volume shares select addresses and responses from Seton Hall University’s 2/7/23 conference “Inciting Peace From The Inside Out.” A multi-disciplinary range of scholars each addresses how reconciliation processes grow from spiritual dynamics. Multiple religious traditions teach contemplative praxes that prioritize and nurture personal reflection oriented toward peace. Social conflicts divide, so engaging them with a partisan orientation only serves to escalate harmful rifts. In contrast, bringing personal awareness and sensitivity, spiritual balance, and holistic integral perspective to conflict can transcend divisions and work toward unity. This volume is supported …

The Secret Path To Reconciliation Impact And Legacy Of Gord Downie’S Musical Activism, Duncan Mccallum Jun 2024

The Secret Path To Reconciliation Impact And Legacy Of Gord Downie’S Musical Activism, Duncan Mccallum

Music Education Publications

In 2016, Canadian musician Gord Downie released a solo concept album titled Secret Path, which dealt with the death of Chanie Wenjack, an Anishinaabe boy who passed away after escaping an Ontario residential school in the 1960s. This album came just one year after the Final Report of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) was published, marking a major national step in the reconciliation process. This, in combination with Downie’s terminal brain cancer diagnosis that same year, gave the album a particularly heightened prominence within Canada. This paper examines Downie’s album through the musicological framework of secondary musical witnessing, …

Romani American History: Historical Absences And Their Consequences, Ann Ostendorf Jun 2024

Romani American History: Historical Absences And Their Consequences, Ann Ostendorf

History Faculty Scholarship

American historians have created an historical absence by ignoring Romani people’s presence in evidence from the past. The origins of this “absence-ing” are multifaceted and interrelated, but fundamentally stem from the continued influence of out-of-date and unprofessional ways of thinking and knowing. Examining and understanding “absence-ing” requires a consideration of the nature of the discipline of history as well as a history of the missing historicization of Romani Americans. The consequences of the “absence-ing” of Romani people from American histories have negatively and distinctively influenced four different groups of people: historians of the Americas; historians of Romani people in Europe; …

Synesthetic Symbolism: Community Engagement With The Sacred At The Boudhanath Stupa, Madeleine E. Tevonian Jun 2024

Synesthetic Symbolism: Community Engagement With The Sacred At The Boudhanath Stupa, Madeleine E. Tevonian

Lawrence University Honors Projects

This paper is a discussion of the complex relationship between the Great Boudhanath Stupa in the Kathmandu Valley, and the diverse Buddhist community that surrounds it. I argue that liberative sense experience and movement-encoded cultural knowledge make the community of practitioners a part of the stupa—and thus necessary to any examination of it. My argument is contextualized by a background on stupas and etymology of several Sanskrit and Tibetan terms, and I utilize a framework of religious studies concepts of sacred space and pilgrimage as well as on-site anthropological fieldwork focusing on practitioners’ daily lives. I investigate how the stupa …

Technology And The Human Body In The Films Of David Cronenberg, Owen Davies Jun 2024

Technology And The Human Body In The Films Of David Cronenberg, Owen Davies

Lawrence University Honors Projects

Since David Cronenberg seemingly broke from the genres of science fiction and body horror, scholarship surrounding his work has shifted away from questions of the body and technology. However, his recent return to the conventions of these genres in the film Crimes of the Future (2022) requires us to return to these questions. Through the work of Deleuze and Guattari, I analyze the ways in which technology interacts with the body as a factor of technological development, along with the ramifications of technology for the production of subjectivity and organization of sexuality. I use this to demonstrate one possible political …
