All The World's A Page: Towards A Definition Of 'Writer' In An Age Of Opportunity, Sue Norton Dec 2015

All The World's A Page: Towards A Definition Of 'Writer' In An Age Of Opportunity, Sue Norton

Articles

This article considers the status of the writer at a time when publication is no longer elusive, given the immediacy of online dissemination. For those who identify as writers, it looks at the implications of blogging, social media, entrepreneurial self-publishing, and scholarly open access journals, including so-called ‘predatory’ ones. It argues for a distinction between day-to-day writing and composition, and seeks to establish a category for the writer that takes account of deliberation, craft, and readership. It juxtaposes the creative activity of Jack Kerouac, Virginia Woolf, Truman Capote, and Mother Goose against the linguist John McWhorter’s convincing dismissal of the …

Concussion The Film, Richard C. Crepeau Dec 2015

Concussion The Film, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

Several months ago there was a minor flap over the fact that the National Football League was given the right to delete parts of the film “Concussion” before its general release to the public. At the time many, including myself, feared that the NFL would defang the bite of the film. It did not. In fact it’s hard to imagine what the NFL censored in “Concussion” given the devastating nature of the final product which is now in release.

Postmodern Exhibition Discourse: Anthropological Study Of An Art Display Case., Marta Wieczorek Dec 2015

Postmodern Exhibition Discourse: Anthropological Study Of An Art Display Case., Marta Wieczorek

All Works

The article studies tendencies in contemporary museum exhibitions and art display trends. While analysing current status quo of art in the museum context, it discusses the limitations of curatorial impact on the audience perception of the displayed objects. The paper presents a case study of a permanent museum exhibition with an added performance element. As argued in the article, such approach allows a stratified narrative and provokes a dialogue between the audience, performers, and curators, fully reflecting postmodern polyphonic tendency. The aim of the article is to comment on postmodern trends in museology, the status of the displayed art (object), …

‘Tell Your Own Story’: Manhood, Masculinity And Racial Socialization Among Black Fathers And Their Sons, Quaylan Allen

Education Faculty Articles and Research

This study examines how black fathers and sons in the U.S. conceptualize manhood and masculinity and the racial socializing practices of black men. Drawing upon data from an ethnography on Black male schooling, this paper uses the interviews with fathers and sons to explore how race and gender intersect in how Black males make meaning of their gendered performances. Common notions of manhood are articulated including independence, responsibility and providership. However, race and gender intersect in particular ways for black men. The fathers engaged in particular racial socializing practices preparing their sons for encounters with racism. Both fathers and sons …

Concussions, Richard C. Crepeau Dec 2015

Concussions, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

ESPN reported this week that the NFL had pulled funding for concussion research because one of the principal researchers was Dr. Robert Stern of Boston University who has been critical of the NFL. The grant was awarded by the National Institute of Health(NIH) and the NFL denied pulling out of the grant saying that the NIH made all funding decisions and that the NFL has no veto power over the use of the $30M it had donated to the NIH in 2012 with no strings attached. It turns out however that it did retain a veto over the use of …
