Review Of La Sfortuna Di Jacopo Piccinino: Storia Dei Bracceschi In Italia 1423-1465, Brian Maxson Dec 2007

Review Of La Sfortuna Di Jacopo Piccinino: Storia Dei Bracceschi In Italia 1423-1465, Brian Maxson

Brian J. Maxson

Serena Ferente argues that the military and political leader Jacopo Piccinino was at the head of several groups who were on the outside of the Italian League after the mid- 1450s. In this role, Jacopo Piccinino was the last condottiere both to command a base across Italy and to propagate the old filo-French allegiances of several groups in opposition to the hardening of the Italian state system. Ferente bases her claims on an impressive array of contemporary and early modern literary sources combined with a deep knowledge of fifteenth-century diplomatic documents.

Warning! Experts May Be Hazardous To Your Health, Malla Pollack Dec 2007

Warning! Experts May Be Hazardous To Your Health, Malla Pollack

Malla Pollack

The academy is now emphasizing inter-disciplinary scholarship and decision-making, especially the use of science to guide legal and political policy. This approach has many strengths, however, some caution is also appropriate. Using inter-disciplinary sources, this article discusses four inter-related problems with the scientific solution to social problems. First, and most central, science is about means, not ends. Second, expertise is often applied beyond its relevant field. Third, non-experts have difficulty judging competing experts. Fourth, experts’ predictions are often wrong. The United States is presented as a horrible example of over-valuing expertise, specifically economic theory. In conditions of uncertainty, decision-makers are …

Missionary Contributions Toward The Revaluation Of Hangeul In Late Nineteenth-Century Korea, David Silva Dec 2007

Missionary Contributions Toward The Revaluation Of Hangeul In Late Nineteenth-Century Korea, David Silva

David Silva

Soon after their arrival to Korea, Christian missionaries were confronted by decisions regarding how they would present written materials to the Korean people. While many Koreans used their indigenous script (Hangeul) for ev- eryday purposes, higher status literacy materials were expected to be pre- sented using Chinese characters (Hanja), a system unfamiliar to most but considered more prestigious by all. In deciding to publish the majority of their materials in the more accessible but lower-status script, the mission- aries contributed to a revaluation of Hangeul as a fully legitimate means of written communication in a broader range of functional domains.

Egészségpolitika És Etika (Health Policy And Ethics), Attila Tanyi, Zsofia Kollanyi Dec 2007

Egészségpolitika És Etika (Health Policy And Ethics), Attila Tanyi, Zsofia Kollanyi

Attila Tanyi

This book provides a survey of the ethical aspects of health care resources distribution. It first distinguishes health from health care in an effort to clear up the ethical landscape. After this, still with the same purpose, it makes a distinction between problems of macro-allocation and micro-allocation. In the rest of the book two questions of macro-allocation are treated in some detail. First, several approaches – in particular: utilitarian, egalitarian, communitarian, and libertarian – to the question whether we have a right to health care are assessed. Second, it is discussed how best, if we have such a right, health …

Psiche: Platone E Freud. Desiderio, Sogno, Mania, Eros, Firenze: Firenze University Press, 2008 (Pdf: Indice)., Marco Solinas Dec 2007

Psiche: Platone E Freud. Desiderio, Sogno, Mania, Eros, Firenze: Firenze University Press, 2008 (Pdf: Indice)., Marco Solinas

Marco Solinas

What would Virginia Woolf do if she taught at a community college today? She did teach at the closest thing to a community college of her time. In her twenties, Woolf taught for three years at Morley College, an evening institute set up for working men and women in London (Bell 105).

The Spread Of Lithobolia, Emerson Baker Dec 2007

The Spread Of Lithobolia, Emerson Baker

Emerson Baker

In the holiday 2007 issue of New England Ancestors, Diane Rapaport introduced readers to the strange case of the "Stone-Throwing Devil" that attacked the Walton family of Great Island (present-day New Castle, New Hampshire). Throughout the summer of 1682, the Waltons and their home and tavern were constantly pelted with rocks. In addition to this stony assault, objects moved about the house or disappeared, and people heard strange noises. Since no culprits were ever seen, the Waltons believed the cause was what contemporaries called "lithobolia, or the stone-throwing devil" (lithobolia is Greek for stone-thrower).

The Waltons became convinced that …
