Many patients are not aware that natural products such as fruit juices or plant infusions can cause significant interactions with several drugs, some of which can be dangerous, especially when the medical treatment is for neurological or psychiatric disorders. Among the most predisposed for interacting with drugs are citric juices, particularly grapefruit and plant infusions, especially St John`s wort (Hypericum perforatum). Understanding the mechanism and the frequency of this type of interaction helps to avoid it. The goal of this research was to identify and summarize the most relevant reports on interactions between psychotropic drugs and natural beverages, in order …

Key locks work when a key made with teeth is placed into a cylinder with a series of pins and tumblers. If you don’t insert the right key one or more of the pins will remain in the way, preventing the key from turning and the lock will remain closed. According to the United States Interagency Council on Homelessness, tens of …

In Utero Drug Exposure Impact On Infant Health, Katie Edwards, Lisa M. Borges, Carlie J. Schoenherr
Lake Campus Research Symposium Abstracts and Posters
Drug use during pregnancy has many impacts on the baby’s and mother’s health. Prenatal drug use affects a child’s development during his or her life. When exposed to in utero drug use the baby tends to have a lower birth weight, preterm birth, and intrauterine growth restrictions compared to a baby not exposed to drugs. The number of infants being born with withdrawal to drugs is increasing. This is an important problem because the number of fetuses exposed in utero to drugs is increasing. Research shows that exposure does pose a risk to the fetus and birth outcomes. Finding and …

Developing A Sustainable Group Tobacco Control Program In A Community Mental Health Clinic, Jennifer Burns
Doctoral Projects
While substantial practical, empirical, and theoretical contributions have been made toward the implementation of healthcare innovations, significantly less attention has been directed towards the sustainability of these interventions. For this reason, many healthcare innovations become unsustainable over time—yielding few long-term improvements, causing stakeholder disenchantment, and wasting valuable resources. The use of tobacco products is a leading cause of preventable death and disease in the United States that is disproportionately prevalent among individuals with severe mental illness, making the development and sustainment of evidencebased tobacco control programs imperative to alleviating this public health burden. As a final project in Grand Valley’s …

Our objective over the course of the summer and the school year was to help develop a new branch of the REACH Lab called Rural Drug Addiction Research center. This branch consisted mainly with the usage of drugs across the midwest. It wasn't until 2018 that the drug crisis hit the midwest increasing by 48% bringing attention to rural drug use. We were here to help translate those findings into something the more general public would understand as well as help with spreading awareness to the community.

State Regulatory Responses To The Prescription Opioid Crisis: Too Much To Bear?, Lars Noah
Dickinson Law Review (2017-Present)
In order to prevent further overuse of prescription opioids, states have adopted a variety of strategies. This article summarizes the growing use of prescription drug monitoring programs, crackdowns on “pill mills,” prohibitions on the use of particularly hazardous opioids, limitations on the duration and dosage of prescribed opioids, excise taxes, physician education and patient disclosure requirements, public awareness campaigns, and drug take-back programs. Although occasionally challenged on constitutional grounds, including claims of federal preemption under the Supremacy Clause, discrimination against out-of-state businesses under the dormant Commerce Clause doctrine, and interference with rights of commercial free speech, this article evaluates the …

Underlying Racism Within The Opioid Epidemic, Hannah L.A.S. Wilson
Brigham Young University Prelaw Review
Within the past century, the United States attempted different legal
avenues to address drug abuse. Some of these efforts made access
to drugs punishable and illegal. Others encouraged research to look
at underlying issues of drug abuse and implement those findings.
Within the past fifty years, these laws tended to treat drug addicts
as criminals instead of as persons suffering from a health crisis.
According to the FBI and Uniform Crime Reports, from the 1980’s
to the 2000’s, drug arrests rose by 1.5 million per year, while drug
usage rates stayed the same.3 The severe increase in the criminalization
and …

Stretching The Law: The Application Of Public Nuisance To The Opioid Epidemic, Lindsay Manning, Hannah L. Thompson
Brigham Young University Prelaw Review
Opioid use in the United States increased five-fold in the last decade.
Every day ninety Americans die from drug abuse overdose. Is it
illegal opioid trafficking, or is it a problem within the medical profession?
Recent litigation strategies, like those used in the recent
landmark case of Oklahoma v. Johnson and Johnson, show that opioid
production and distribution are being linked to fueling the opioid
epidemic. Oklahoma is just one of the states that have concluded that
Johnson and Johnson, a large pharmaceutical company, is “overstating”
the efficiency of opioids and “understating” the harmful effects
of these drugs. Consequently, litigation …

This thesis project served to develop harm-reduction strategies for the Panhellenic sorority community at the University of South Carolina and evaluate their effectiveness. These initiatives began with a focus on the 1,445 new members that accepted sorority bids in August 2019 and expanded to include initiated members, resulting in 4,414 total members being included in this project. Multiple strategies were implemented, including new member surveys, peer-led discussions, mentor education, alternative sober events, online risk assessments, and harm reduction interventions before high-risk events. While new members displayed increased drinking frequency and consumption amounts throughout the duration of their sorority membership, they …

The opioid epidemic is an extensive global problem, but it is not random that it is most severe in the United Sates. It is commonly believed that the individuals with substance use disorder and the health care system are at fault, however many people disregard the impact culture and systems have on substance use disorder. I tackled this gap by conducting formal qualitative interviews with experts in the field of addiction and dissecting academic work. After this research it is apparent that the American culture and institutions has made individuals vulnerable to become addicted to opioids while other similar European …

Medical Student Research Symposium
While nearly one in three foster youth smoke daily, there is minimal screening and treatment in this population. Interventions that are accessible and engaging are needed to help reduce this health disparity.
This study tested the feasibility and acceptability of a smoking cessation treatment (iHeLP) delivered via computers and mobile phones among weekly cigarette smokers leaving foster care (ages 18 to 20). After study completion, we interviewed participants from the intervention (n=18) and control (n=17) groups. Interview themes included how participants felt the program worked/did not work, suggested changes, and perceived barriers to quitting. Transcripts were independently coded by two …

Background: Prevalences of Alcohol Use Disorders (AUDs) and Mental Health Disorders (MHDs) in many individual countries have been reported but there are few cross-national studies. The WHO World Mental Health (WMH) Survey Initiative standardizes methodological factors facilitating comparison of the prevalences and associated factors of AUDs in a large number of countries to identify differences and commonalities.
Methods: Lifetime and 12-month prevalence estimates of DSM-IV AUDs, MHDs, and associations were assessed in the 29 WMH surveys using the WHO CIDI 3.0.
Results: Prevalence estimates of alcohol use and AUD across countries and WHO regions varied widely. Mean lifetime prevalence of …

BACKGROUND: Opioid overprescription has the potential to lead to harmful medications remaining in homes and to a rise in accidental or deliberate ingestion by children and adolescents. Although methods for opioid disposal are available, many are costly or require greater than minimal effort for the patient. In this study, we used a mail-back return envelope to retrieve unused opioids after ambulatory pediatric surgery.
METHODS: This feasibility study was performed to assess the rate of opioid return by using a mail-back envelope for children ages 0 to 18 prescribed opioids after outpatient surgery. Participants were provided a return envelope as well …
