Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is an effective therapy for various neurologic and neuropsychiatric disorders, involving chronic implantation of electrodes into target brain regions for electrical stimulation delivery. Despite its safety and efficacy, DBS remains an underutilized therapy. Advances in the field of DBS, including in technology, mechanistic understanding, and applications have the potential to expand access and use of DBS, while also improving clinical outcomes. Developments in DBS technology, such as MRI compatibility and bidirectional DBS systems capable of sensing neural activity while providing therapeutic stimulation, have enabled advances in our understanding of DBS mechanisms and its application. In this …

Treatment-resistant depression (TRD) is a term used to describe a particular type of major depressive disorder (MDD). There is no consensus about what defines TRD, with various studies describing between 1 and 4 failures of antidepressant therapies, with or without electroconvulsive therapy (ECT). That is why TRD is such a growing concern among clinicians and researchers, and it explains the necessity for investigating novel therapeutic targets beyond conventional monoamine pathways. An imbalance between two primary central nervous system (CNS) neurotransmitters, L-glutamate and γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA), has emerged as having a key role in the pathophysiology of TRD. In this …

Background: There is a critical need for effective treatment of the core symptoms of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The purinergic antagonist suramin may improve core symptoms through restoration of normal mitochondrial function and reduction of neuro-inflammation via its known antagonism of P2X and P2Y receptors. Nonclinical studies in fragile X knockout mice and the maternal immune activation model support these hypotheses.

Methods: We conducted a 14 week, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled proof -of-concept study (N = 52) to test the efficacy and safety of suramin intravenous infusions in boys aged 4-15 years with moderate to severe ASD. The study had 3 …

Crossing Schools, Language, And Migration Borders: The Experiences Of Latinx And Caribbean Emergent Multilingual Mothers In K-12 Public Schools, Michelle Angelo-Rocha

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Anti-immigrant sentiment and "English-only" ideologies have a significant impact on educational policies, practices, and processes. This includes parental engagement, the quality of education and life opportunities offered to immigrant children, and families’ well-being. The purpose of this study was to examine how Latinx and Caribbean mothers in Florida with various immigration statuses (i.e., undocumented, asylum seekers, refugees, international students, and mixed-status) and often with limited financial resources attempt to steward their children through the U.S. educational system. The research question was: How did emergent multilingual immigrant mothers experience the K-12 education system in Florida? The sub-question was: How did schools …

BACKGROUND: Quantitative interstitial abnormalities (QIA) are an automated computed tomography (CT) finding of early parenchymal lung disease, associated with worse lung function, reduced exercise capacity, increased respiratory symptoms, and death. The metabolomic perturbations associated with QIA are not well known. We sought to identify plasma metabolites associated with QIA in smokers. We also sought to identify shared and differentiating metabolomics features between QIA and emphysema, another smoking-related advanced radiographic abnormality.

METHODS: In 928 former and current smokers in the Genetic Epidemiology of COPD cohort, we measured QIA and emphysema using an automated local density histogram method and generated metabolite profiles …

Repurposing Egfr Inhibitors For Oral Cancer Pain And Opioid Tolerance, Maria Daniela Santi, Morgan Zhang, Naijiang Liu, Chi T Viet, Tongxin Xie, Dane D Jensen, Moran Amit, Huilin Pan, Yi Ye

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Oral cancer pain remains a significant public health concern. Despite the development of improved treatments, pain continues to be a debilitating clinical feature of the disease, leading to reduced oral mobility and diminished quality of life. Opioids are the gold standard treatment for moderate-to-severe oral cancer pain; however, chronic opioid administration leads to hyperalgesia, tolerance, and dependence. The aim of this review is to present accumulating evidence that epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) signaling, often dysregulated in cancer, is also an emerging signaling pathway critically involved in pain and opioid tolerance. We presented preclinical and clinical data to demonstrate how …

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Morality has been an integral part of social cognition and our daily life, and different languages may exert distinct impacts on human moral judgment. However, it remains unclear how moral concept is encoded in the bilingual brain. This study, therefore, aimed to explore the emotional and cognitive involvement of bilingual morality judgement by using combined event-related potential (ERP) and psychophysiological (including skin, heart, and pulse) measures. In the experiment, thirty-one Chinese-English bilingual participants were asked to make moral judgments in Chinese and English, respectively. Our results revealed increased early frontal N400 and decreased LPC in L1 moral concept encoding as …

Health-related social needs (HRSNs) affect health outcomes and healthcare utilization. Patients’ perspectives on the incorporation of HRSN screening in primary care settings is limited. We sought to explore adult primary care patient perspectives of HRSN screening from optional patient-provided free-text comments as part of a pilot self-administered HRSN screening survey on seven domains of HRSNs from the Accountable Health Communities HRSNs Screening Tool. The survey was available in English, Chinese or Spanish with a section titled “Comments” that invited patient respondents to provide anonymous free-text responses. We performed a thematic analysis of the written patient comments. Of the 679 participants …

Music Performance Anxiety: A Comparative Analysis Of Treatment Options For The Vocalist, Brooklyn Becker 2023 University of Denver

Music Performance Anxiety: A Comparative Analysis Of Treatment Options For The Vocalist, Brooklyn Becker

Musicology and Ethnomusicology: Student Scholarship

Music Performance Anxiety (MPA) is a multifaceted social anxiety disorder that affects a significantly large population of practicing and professional musicians. If untreated, it can have detrimental effects on the performer and their career. MPA is multifaceted in that it encompasses cognitive, physiological, and behavioral symptoms. Because of its multifaceted nature, there is not one specific intervention or treatment option for MPA, but multiple interventions that have been studied and tested as potential treatment options. While the body of research on MPA has expanded since the 1970s, there is a disparity of research in the literature that focuses solely on …
