Abstract

BACKGROUND: Depression in adults is a leading cause of disability, morbidity and mortality worldwide with an estimated prevalence of 20% in the US population. Despite estimates that one out of every five Americans suffers from depression, less than 50% of adult primary care patients with depression are identified, and less than 5% of all adult primary care patients are screened. To increase early detection and management of depression, the United States Protective Service Task Force (USPSTF) recommends routine depression screening for adults older than 18 years in primary care settings.

Purpose/Background

Postoperative delirium impacts as many as 51% of surgical patients, resulting in increased mortality and morbidity, longer hospital stays, and increased healthcare costs. Adults ≥ 65 have a high risk for developing delirium. This scoping review examines the use of dexmedetomidine in the perioperative period in adults ≥ 65 years old to prevent and treat postoperative delirium.

Methods

Using relevant inclusion criteria, an extensive review of the literature was performed from September through November 2022, utilizing the Cochrane, CINAHL, ClinicalKey, PubMed, and Embase databases. This study explores how intergenerational programming can be improved and implemented throughout long-term care homes in Canada. To answer this question, five eligible participants were interviewed based on their experiences with intergenerational programming in long-term care settings. These participants were recruited by means of word-of-mouth, social media outreach and direct phone calls. Problem: The facility highly utilized sitters or care companions, negatively impacting the staffing plan, budget, and productivity. An average of 56 hours of care companions were used daily. This greatly exceeded the budget of 33 hours a day. Reassigning Patient Care Technicians (PCT) as care companions resulted in inadequate nurse support for patient care and increased cost for additional staffing needs. Despite this, the fall rate remained higher than the target.

The purpose of this quality improvement project was to use evidence-based practices to determine if personalized education on disease self-management would lead to improved treatment adherence in a residential facility. The target population consisted of four elderly female patients who had been diagnosed with congestive heart failure (CHF) and were struggling with the self-management of their disease. Objectives: We examined associations between social activity restriction and psychological distress and well-being for caregivers of older adults with and without dementia, and if the identified associations are different for the two groups. Methods: Using data from the 2017 National Study of Caregiving, we identified caregivers of older adults with (N = 541) and without (N = 1701) dementia. Linear regression models were estimated, adjusting for caregivers’ age, gender, race, education, relationship to care recipient, and self-rated health.
