In 2015, the partners of the Greater University Circle Economic Inclusion Initiative reached an important milestone—5 years of working together to revitalize the seven neighborhoods that comprise Greater University Circle (GUC). This milestone offers an opportunity to take a step back and reflect on why the group first came together as well as their collective accomplishments, challenges, and opportunities. This report assesses the contributions of The Ohio Aerospace Institute (OAI) to the economy of the State of Ohio during the specific period of its 1998-2015 fiscal years. The study was conducted by the Center for Economic Development at Cleveland State University’s Maxine Goodman Levin College of Urban Affairs. The impact of OAI is described here in terms of the employment, labor income, value added, output, and tax revenue generated because of OAI’s presence in the state. Through the Center for Economic Development's research, consulting and technical assistance efforts, it has become increasingly apparent that increased knowledge concerning the revitalization of old mills and mill communities is necessary. The problem is particularly acute in smaller communities and in areas of slow growth, where problems and solutions are addressed differently than larger towns near urban locations. The purpose of this symposium was to gain an understanding of the methods that can protect and enhance mill character and the economic viability in mill communities.
