Immigrant Women From Iran And Afghanistan In Sweden: Experiences Of Domestic Violence During The Covid Pandemic, Fatemeh Hamedanian

Dignity: A Journal of Analysis of Exploitation and Violence

This paper explores the firsthand experiences of immigrant women victims of domestic violence amidst the COVID-19 crisis. Sixteen Iranian and Afghan women residing in Sweden were interviewed. Their responses were analyzed using qualitative content analysis. An intersectional perspective was used to understand domestic violence among the immigrant women. The study found high levels of psychological violence and controlling behavior by the women’s partners. The harm was compounded by economic instability, the temporality of residency permits, and the limited access to support services. The intersectional analysis suggests that multiple factors in the midst of the pandemic increase the vulnerability of abused …

Migration Integration Policies As Social Determinants Of Health For Highly Educated Immigrants In The United States, Mitra Naseh, Yingying Zeng, Abha Rai, Ian Sutherland, Hyunwoo Yoon

Social Work: School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Other Works

Highly educated immigrants are part of the growing population of immigrants who are impacted by the increasingly hostile migration policies in the U.S. This qualitative study used a phenomenological approach and inductive reasoning to explore the possible impacts of migration integration policies as social determinants of health among this group. Data was collected through 31 semi-structured interviewees with highly educated immigrants who had an intention and interest to stay in the U.S. at the time of the interview. Data were analyzed using reflexive thematic analysis and four main themes emerged: (1) a life overshadowed by silent worries, (2) living through …

Moving At The Speed Of Trust, Sun Ho Lee Jun 2023

Moving At The Speed Of Trust, Sun Ho Lee

Masters Theses

Moving at the Speed of Trust is a workbook of strategies — practices, definitions, and techniques — to nurture community-building in support of inbetweeners who live between power structures and cultures and are often left out. Inbetweeners are those individuals whose lives are in transition through recent immigration or forced translocation from Asia to America.

These strategies revolve around threads of trust: kin, giggles, vulnerability, and shared experience. With these threads, we can question power. We can preserve stories, expand the ways we connect, shift perspectives on what is “standard,” and cultivate a community rooted in understanding. To understand each …

Social Workers’ Competency When Working With Latino Immigrant Families, Suleima Corea, Cynthia Gutierrez

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

This study will focus on exploring the competency of social workers who provide services to Latino immigrant clients, who are court-ordered to complete services, meaning that a juvenile court has had to remove the child from their parents due to abuse or neglect. When social services practitioners provide service to Latino immigrant clients, it is important for them to be familiarized with the culture, beliefs, and behaviors to better understand and serve the population.

This qualitative study used a snowball sampling method to interview six Southern California social workers in two different child welfare agencies via Zoom. The participants were …

“It Doesn’T Matter How Good The School Is If You Don’T Learn To Socialize”: Latinx Immigrant Students’ Testimonios Of Coping With Social Isolation In High School, Jenn M. Lilly

Social Service Faculty Publications

Understanding how Latinx immigrant youth cope with the stressor of social isolation is vital to understanding and improving their functioning and well-being; yet little is known about how they cope with experiences of social isolation in school. To fill this gap in the literature, the purpose of this exploratory study was to qualitatively examine the coping strategies that Latinx immigrant students utilized in the face of social isolation in one high school in a newer Latinx destination in the U.S. south. This study employed a narrative and culturally congruent methodological approach, analyzing the digital testimonios of 5 female and 2 …

Preserving My Arab Self While Finding My Home In Canada: First Generation Recent Arab Immigrant Emerging Adults’ Perspectives On Acculturation Experiences And Canadian Society’S Role In Fostering Equitable Participation, Riham Al-Saadi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Understanding the essence of Arab immigrant emerging adults’ acculturation is a developing area of research and cultural studies in Social Work amongst other fields. Critical Race Theory (CRT) allows for contextualizing this phenomenon within the temporal and environmental structures in which it is experienced. The current study used qualitative inquiry; particularly psychological phenomenology was applied to arrive at the essence of acculturation. A total of 27 Arab immigrant emerging adults living in Windsor-Essex participated in this study and five themes emerged to inform how they understand the acculturation process. Arab immigrant emerging adults understand acculturation as a mutual dedication of …

Life Satisfaction And Healthcare Utilization Among Immigrants To The United States, Merritt Christian Rachel Harrelson Aug 2019

Life Satisfaction And Healthcare Utilization Among Immigrants To The United States, Merritt Christian Rachel Harrelson

LSU Master's Theses

Previous research suggests a relationship between life satisfaction and healthcare utilization or HCU (Habibov & Afandi, 2016; Kim, Park, Sun, Smith, & Peterson, 2014). However, no study was found that examined this relationship among elderly American immigrants. The purpose of this study was to determine whether life satisfaction is linked to HCU for this population. The researcher of the current study applied binary logistic regression to data taken from the Health and Retirement Survey to determine whether changes in life satisfaction could be linked to variance in HCU across seven domains, including hospitalization, overnight nursing home stays, doctors visits, dentist …

Strengths-Based Theory In Direct Service For Immigrants And Forced Migrants, Dawn Brubaker May 2019

Strengths-Based Theory In Direct Service For Immigrants And Forced Migrants, Dawn Brubaker

Doctor of Social Work Banded Dissertations

Global migration patterns are increasing due to human and environmental causes of displacement. Immigrants or migrants are people who chose to migrate to a new country and forced migrants are those who arrived into a nation but were forced to leave their home. Migration into the U.S. is positive because it offsets low population growth and supports economic engines. It is important to make support available due to the trauma of displacement for these groups.

The first product is a conceptual framework concept called intercultural service coordination, and trauma-informed care with service coordination. This conceptual framework for immigrants and forced …
