Introduction To Special Issue On Radiation Effects, P. Andrew Karam
Introduction To Special Issue On Radiation Effects, P. Andrew Karam
The University of New Hampshire Law Review
[Excerpt] "How dangerous is radiation? How much radiation does it take to give us cancer? Are we wasting money on overly restrictive regulations, or are we not being sufficiently protective of our radiation workers and the public? How much clean-up is necessary on our Department of Energy facilities? What about Yucca Mountain and nuclear reactor plants – can they be made safe?
These are only a few of the questions that have been asked, and will continue to be asked, about radiation. Unfortunately, these all come down, in part or in whole, to the question “What is the shape of …

Effects Of The Shape Of The Radiation Dose-Response Curve On Public Acceptance Of Radiation And Nuclear Energy, Audeen W. Fentiman
The University of New Hampshire Law Review
[Excerpt] “The public generally accepts the premise that exposure to radiation can have an undesirable effect. Furthermore, it believes that as the radiation dose increases, the magnitude of the effect will increase. On the other hand, while the background radiation dose varies from a few hundred millirem/year (a few millisieverts/yr) in some places to a few thousand millirem/yr (tens of millisieverts/yr) in others, researchers have been unable to find a correlation between the level of background radiation and incidence of cancer or other maladies attributable to radiation.

Interim Management Arrangements For The Commercial Mackerel Fishery. Ministers Responses To The Final Report Of The Mackerel Independent Advisory Panel. (Fisheries Management Paper 164), Kim Chance
Fisheries Management Papers
The Government recognises that the mackerel fishery is important to both the recreational and commercial fishing sectors. However, the purpose of these arrangements is not to allocate the mackerel resource between the sectors but within the commercial sector. Resources sharing issues are subject to investigation in the Integrated Fisheries Management Review where alternative management frameworks and principles for allocating fish stocks to ensure maximum benefit to the community are examined.
Presidential Domain: An Exploratory Study Of Prospect Theory And Us Climate Policy Since 1998, Hal T. Nelson
Presidential Domain: An Exploratory Study Of Prospect Theory And Us Climate Policy Since 1998, Hal T. Nelson
Dissertations and Theses
The Bush administration's decision to abandon the Kyoto Protocol can be explained by prospect theory. The change in federal climate policy between the Clinton and Bush administrations was due to the difference in domain that each president operated under. President Clinton operated under a domain of losses as he associated continued fossil fuel use with future socio-economic and environmental damages from climate change. This domain of losses increased President Clinton's risk tolerances and explains his pursuit of the Kyoto Protocol, an international agreement to limit greenhouse gas emissions. Conversely, President Bush operated under a domain of gains where he did …

Workshop On Sustainable Development Of Marine Fish Farming In Wa, Peter Rogers, R Fletcher
Fisheries Management Papers
The purpose of this paper is twofold. First to provide an overview of the role of government and more particularly the Department of Fisheries and second to outline government expectations for aquaculture development agencies in the implementation of sustainable development initiatives and the effect this could have on the management of aquaculture within WA.

Historical analysis is an indispensable tool in the study of politics. When building theories, it allows us to evaluate the explanatory power of our carefully-delineated models in light of the broader (ceteris non paribus) social context. From a methodological standpoint, historical analysis is receiving renewed attention in efforts to devise rigorous qualitative methods for establishing cause and effect. For these reasons the emerging field of environmental history merits close study and emulation by researchers in international environmental politics and policy (IEP). In addition to offering worthy examples of how to conduct historical research, environmental history directly engages many …
Reseeding Of Grazing Gastropods And Bivalves Into The Marine Environment In Western Australia, Jane Borg
Reseeding Of Grazing Gastropods And Bivalves Into The Marine Environment In Western Australia, Jane Borg
Fisheries Management Papers
The Department of Fisheries does not want to embark on what is ‘new territory’ in Western Australia without a policy framework to define what is to happen, why it is to happen, and what will happen if the project does or does not succeed. This paper therefore attempts to do three things. 1. It sets in place accepted definitions of reseeding and stock enhancement within the general context of fisheries management in Western Australia. 2. It discusses the policy issues associated with reseeding grazing gastropods and bivalves into the natural environment. 3. It proposes a framework or process to be …
