Psychology 3840g: Taking Out The Trash: Towards Responsible Waste Management Among London’S Post-Secondary Student Residents, Wendy Ellis, Noah Laskey, Sarina Lizotte, Bram Richmond

Community Engaged Learning Final Projects

The City of London’s off-campus student population exhausts much of the Waste Management Department’s time and resources with their irresponsible waste disposal habits. To better understand the factors affecting student waste mismanagement, a Qualtrics survey was administered on problematic streets populated largely by post-secondary students. This survey examined whether understanding one’s waste management expectations translated into responsible waste disposal. The survey also explored the impact of environmental, economic, and community concerns on waste management behaviours. Finally, students answered questions regarding perceived barriers to responsible waste management. Analyses revealed that students who understand waste management expectations are more likely to responsibly …

(Re)Grounding Grounded Theory: A Close Reading Of Theory In Four Schools, Tavis Apramian, Sayra Cristancho, Chris Watling, Lorelei Lingard Aug 2017

(Re)Grounding Grounded Theory: A Close Reading Of Theory In Four Schools, Tavis Apramian, Sayra Cristancho, Chris Watling, Lorelei Lingard

The debate over what counts as theory has dominated methodological conversations in grounded theory research for decades. Four of the schools of thought in that debate – Glaserian, Straussian, Charmazian, and Clarkeian – hold different assumptions about what theory is and how it is made. The first two schools understand theory as an abstraction that exactingly accounts for exceptions. The second two schools understand theory as a process of describing voices hidden from public view. While Glaserian and Straussian coding processes focus on coding exceptions, Charmazian and Clarkeian coding processes focus on building a story of the participants or social …

DeVoe and House (2012; Experiment 3) demonstrated that the process of thinking about one’s income in relation to time (i.e., as an hourly wage) affected the enjoyment that participants derived from pleasurable experiences. Participants compelled to think of “time is money” experienced more impatience and less enjoyment in reaction to listening to a pleasurable piece of music compared to participants not asked to think of time as money. These effects were attenuated when participants were financially compensated for this leisure time. This suggests that putting a price on time can influence enjoyment of leisure activities, depending on the degree to …

Enhancing Transparency Of The Research Process To Increase Accuracy Of Findings: A Guide For Relationship Researchers, Lorne Campbell, Timothy J. Loving, Etienne P. Lebel Dec 2014

Enhancing Transparency Of The Research Process To Increase Accuracy Of Findings: A Guide For Relationship Researchers, Lorne Campbell, Timothy J. Loving, Etienne P. Lebel

Psychology Publications

The purpose of this paper is to extend to the field of relationship science, recent discussions and suggested changes in open research practises. We demonstrate different ways that greater transparency of the research process in our field will accelerate scientific progress by increasing accuracy of reported research findings. Importantly, we make concrete recommendations for how relationship researchers can transition to greater disclosure of research practices in a manner that is sensitive to the unique design features of methodologies employed by relationship scientists. We discuss how to implement these recommendations for four different research designs regularly used in relationship research and …

Does Pornography Use Contribute To Antiwoman Aggression? Re-Examination Of The Confluence Model Considering Third Variable Explanations, Jodie L. Baer Apr 2014

Does Pornography Use Contribute To Antiwoman Aggression? Re-Examination Of The Confluence Model Considering Third Variable Explanations, Jodie L. Baer

Undergraduate Honors Posters

The confluence model of sexual aggression (e.g. Malamuth, Heavey & Linz, 1996) suggests that pornography use, thought to promote sexual coercion of women through its presentation of submissive female imagery, works in conjunction with sexual promiscuity (SP) and hostile masculinity (HM) to produce antiwoman-aggressive outcomes. The following study re-examined the confluence model’s claims using a correlational Internet survey involving 188 adult male participants. As expected, confluence model results were replicated such that men higher in HM and SP were more likely to report sexually aggressing with higher (as compared to lower) pornography use. Furthermore, both HM and SP were strong …

A Behavioural Genetics Analysis Of Altruism And Its Relation To The Dark Triad, Maddy Mikulis Jan 2014

A Behavioural Genetics Analysis Of Altruism And Its Relation To The Dark Triad, Maddy Mikulis

Undergraduate Honors Posters

The current study was the first to report a behavioural genetics analysis of altruism and its relationship with the dark triad traits of personality (Machiavellianism, narcissism, and psychopathy). 228 adult twins completed questionnaires of the dark triad and altruism. A significant correlation between altruism and narcissism was revealed. Altruism was found to be influenced in part by genetic factors as well as non-shared environmental factors. Implications and limitations are discussed.
